Xehanort was original Master Xehanort, a Keyblade master. He ends up possessing Terra at the end of Birth By Sleep in order to see his evil plans come to fruition (he was old, Terra was young). Terra becomes the Xehanort we know. Xehanort willing gives his heart to the darkness, then becomes a Heartless and Nobody. The Heartless is "Ansem" at the end of the first game, while the Nobody is "Xemnas". So, in short, Xehanort was a real person. Terra was too.

@sonicmike1995 Ansem used to be a respected sage. When Ansem ceased the experiments after talking with King Mickey, it's likely Xehanort decided he wanted to continue the experiments. It's probably that he wanted to discredit his former leader, so he took on the name, knowing full well that by continuing the experiments, the name of Ansem would be looked upon with disdain.

Umm, Ventus is Roxas. the only reason people associate roxas with sora is because of when sora gave his heart to kairi to save, but it was also at this time that ventus was reborn, and with an identity, Xemnas automatically thought that he was Sora's nobody and named him Roxas.

Xehanort fuse with terra and became terrahanort, but his outer being lost its memory, while terra and xehanort were on the inside fighting over the body. The outer being took the name Xehanort again. Soom, Xehanort took the name Ansem to trick others. When became a nobody and hartless, the hartless was still ansem. Since Xehanort died as Ansem, his nobody was formed from Ansem. so Ansem+x=Xemnas. Zion's name is No I. I being the roman numeral for 1, the name literally being No one. This hints to the fact that she is a special type of nobody created from Sora's memories. Kairi is a Princess of Heart, so she cannot have a nobody, so Namine actually comes from some weird thing that happened when Sora gave his heart to Kairi to wake her up from a coma state, this also creating Roxas.

Namine has no real name like other nobodies because of this, but both her and Kairi's names are water themed.
