  • Yes, love this song and Anthony! Thank you so much for posting this vid! :-)

  • @territheseeker Shameful? Not even a little bit :-)

  • @territheseeker Hallelujah! Three such brilliantly talented men performing it only means there's that much more to love.

  • @lrthorne I so agree. I'm loading all three versions into my iPod, when it turns up, and I can listen to them whenever I want to. I think I've fallen in love with this song. I'm quite sure I've fallen in love with their voices... well, Anthony's and Josh's, anyway... Then again, is it shameful for me to admit to minor crushes on both?

  • Eat it, Josh Groban

  • nobody sings it better than campus the drag star in benidorm.

  • Why all the fuss about Tommy vs. Anthony vs. Josh? They all sound fantastic and bring their own styles to the song. I could listen to any one of them all day long!

  • @lrthorne True, for this piece these 3 are the top versions I've heard. Where I think Tommy Korberg sounds most patriotic, Anthony Warlow sounds most powerful, Josh Groban sounds most down to earth, and these 3 elements works for this song as well.

  • @lrthorne I totally agree. I love this song, and I don't really care who performs it. And I could listen to all three of them, one after the other, all day long.

  • It should be pointed out Warlow was very young here. His interpretation of this song, and others, deepened and became more powerful later on. He is a little pop-y here. In later recordings, he did it in a more echt theatre style.

  • My NUMBER ONE ANNOYANCE ON YouTube is people who love a particular singer doing a song, and then go around the site bashing every other singer who does it.

Koerberg's fine, but does that mean no other singer should be allowed to perform this great song?

Some weird comments here. Warlow sounds female? No, he's singing on TV, and he softens his tone deliberately for the medium. Warlow can blow you out of the theatre if he wants to, but he knew that wouldn't be appropriate in this context.

  • Just LISTEN to him sing....listen....there is so much passion in there on top of the technique! The colors he is using aren't on accident. Those come from a purpose - to express his heart in the song - bring the audience to tears who were there to witness this. Technique simply allows the singer the ability to do this. What other musical theater men can you name that have the same capacity/ability? What...a handful ever? It amazes me how wimpy little singers want to tear apart ever great voice.

  • he looks so odd with hair...

I guess I'm just so used to a bald Anthony Warlow! lol

  • just beautiful. so effortless. his voice is a phenomenon.

  • I love his voice! And he sings this song so wonderful... <3

  • Mr. Warlow is an incredibly passionate performer, he's just performing for tv (and very young). Watch anything else of his and you will see his passion lol.

  • Technique is flawless. his emotion comes through his voice! Very powerful!

  • what a great voice!

  • Wow - that was lovely. What a good voice and song! Just heard Philip Quast sing an amazing live version at the Night Of 1000 Voices concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

  • Screw 'liking'. I 'LOVE' it.

  • amazing version love it, what do you think of mine looking for tips :D /watch?v=TUtQXEpUNhA

  • This a great Warlow song.

  • So, so, so, SO sexy.

  • When Phantom of the Opera first came to Australia (Melbourne) in 1990, he auditioned for the role of Raoul (as he was 28 at the time). However, the Director suggested that he "have a look at the role of the Phantom" and see what he thought. Long story short, he became one of the youngest Phantoms for many years.

It was a wise move, as he was clearly capable of singing the role & who on Earth could go up against him in the role of the Phantom if ANthony was Raoul?!

  • we met in the early 90's and he had already performed this so I guess it was before that by some years ... I am guessing he is mid 20's in this. I believe he is among the best music theatre performers in the world

  • Anthony Warlow is such an amazing singer and performer. I live in New York and have never been to Australia so I've never seen him perform live. I wish he would come to Broadway because he would blow away the men here with that voice. I never get tired of listening to him!

  • same here...been a fan for years.....

  • Jezus, what year was this???

  • And Jezus....why does the year matter?????!!!

  • Anthony Warlow = my favourite singer of all time

  • @unwantedcow Same here! He is the best! :-)

  • He's good....but he kinda looks like a news reporter...."And in breaking news...."

  • Comment removed

  • Absolutely Brilliant!

  • Isn't he the anchor man from KYXZ Channel 2 Evening News? His great hairdo and bland stare gave eit away.

  • Lol, I didnt even notice this comment until I posted mine. we think alike!

  • phenomenal!

  • Anthony Warlow is outstanding, I have seen him perform live several times and he can lift the roof of the building!

  • Come on.... although its not at a perfect speed, far slower than his powerful album recording he still makes Tommy Korbern and Jan Werners look amateur.

  • only different, more elegant, solemnly performed.

  • Nope...Tommy Korberg is still the best

  • listen to Jan Werners version:)

  • I think this versions kind of slow, the pacing seems awkward for some reason. His version on his album is absolutely brilliant though.

  • I think Warlows rendition is too week, he should be singing lovesongs. But this is not an ordinary lovesong to one's country. There should be force, more force in the voice.

Like Körberg has (who is my favourite). josh Groban is good too.

  • I'd go so far to say at this is the definitive rendition of ANTHEM. Anthony Warlow is just terrific.

  • this is a good version but i prefer Michael ball's version.

  • This is the single greatest male vocalist I have ever heard in my entire life.

  • Josh Groban's version is ordinary.Too much breath & it seems rehearsed?

  • he is good, but tommy is the best.

  • no, you are wrong sir

  • tommy korberg and josh groban are both quite talented but tend not to have the rich tone that anthony has, they also overuse vibrata waaaaayyy to much.

also neither of them nail this top note like anthony does. remembering that he is quite young here, he's only gotten better with age

  • dude, I agree with you, why do you reply to my post? Anthony Warlow is the best.

  • better than tommy

  • impossible ^^

  • very possible

  • different to tommy...

    music is all opinion..

I prefer warlow... But you can never say one is better than the other.

  • just listen to the voice. acting, interpretation, or characterization is one thing, quality of voice is another. i prefer warlow due to his great technique and effortless singing. tommy has a throaty pushed voice that wont last him in the business. plus warlow is a fabulous actor. warlow has got an edge way higher than tommy better than tommy imho

  • "tommy has a throaty pushed voice that wont last him in the business."

Hahaha... It has only lasted him 45 years as one of Sweden's most famous and respected singers. Today he's a living legend troughout Scandinavia.

Quality of voice is nothing if you haven't got the acting, interpretation, and characterization. Tommy has it all and seamlessly master all genres. I odon't know that much about Warlow, but I would never stoop to the level of saying that his voice won't last him in the business.

  • if you actually knew about the actual vocal mechanism you would know that what I say is true....

not to diss on that tommy dude but his vocal chords are being put to the extreme

I am no expert but I know enough to say that about tommy....and if tommy had common sense he would stop with that terrible technique in order to be " a legend in scandinavia"

  • That's just silly of you to think you know more about singing than Körberg who's been a professional since the mid 60's. Obviously he's rooted in pop and rock, while Warlow is more classical. One isn't better than the other. Tommy has a fantastic, natural and well-supported technique and is a role model for just about every male singer in Sweden. The Royal Swedish Opera even wanted him as a countertenor. Not bad for an auto-didact! And he already is a legend.

  • Seriously, you don't know anything about singing. well supported technique? you don't even know what that means. tommy doesn't have it. i don't care what style you are singing, classical or pop. technique is technique. tommy has bad technique and you can hear it in his voice.

  • Seriously, are you confusing Tommy Körberg with Josh Groban? You guys leave me baffled. If we're gonna nitpick about technique, Tommy's timbre and overall sound is way more pleasant than Anthony's. In this song, Warlow's vibrato is very pendulous, he barks his high notes, is off pitch at times, and, through the sped-up arrangement, cuts the length of the last note almost in half.

  • If Warlow is barking his high notes I would love to learn how to bark like that....

  • If Tommy has such bad technique why does tommy sound much better than Warlow and Groban? Thats my opinion anyway,

  • for what its worth jesterimb can actaully sing himself so I think he knows what he is talking about.

You both have got good points though

  • his voice just rings. Even then....what a natural!

  • hasn't he got the sweetest face ever!

  • Comment removed

  • Christ he's young here! Phenomenal voice already.

  • this guy's pretty good ^^ he has nothing on tommy though

  • Why don't U listen 2 the words, 4 they R everything!!!!

  • holy crap 2:42

  • @uberderre Haha, Gb :)

  • *shivers down my spine*

  • I was living in Oz and remember this performnce on TV and I WAS HOOKED and have been ever since. ANTHONY, YOU ARE THE BEST. I get goosebumps the minute he opens his mouth.

  • I can't stop write comments on this video, I love Anthony warlow so much and I can't stop saying that!!!! <333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333

  • you can't compare Warlow and Körberg because they are both SPECTACULAR!!!!

the two give a breathtaking performance and the two two simply cannot be compared...

  • OMG He is so handsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • in my opinion anthony's version is much better. he's my favorite vocalist, bar none. His vvoice is just so rich and passionate. and his range is absolutely incredible! i can just sense so much emotion in his voice, no matter what song he's singing. :)

  • i agree but i´m from sweden and he´s from sweden soo i´m not the best judge

  • I think Tommy Körberg has a more beautiful voice than Anthony Warlow. But this man is still one of the best male voices in the world!

  • This should be the most unusual comment I've ever heard about Anthony Warlow. But, it's cool too that you've got such an exceptional opinion.

  • Thanks (for thinking it's cool...)!

But the intention was/is to see the reply

from Warlowisnumbertwo, I mean ...numberone ;-)

  • @yajunwindbell I agree. The most random comment about Warlow. Oh well, we're all entitled to our own opinions...

  • People should stop arguing over it yes but in my opinion Anthony Warlow is much better. I've seen them both and Warlow is SOOOO much more powerful which is understandable since he is an Opera Singer!

  • Anthony sings it well, but in my opinion Körberg sings it more passionate and has a stronger voice. Körberg is the one I'm used to hear singing this so that affects me too. But Warlow has a really nice voice ^^

(people seriously have to stop arguing and fighting over who sings this the best, it's a matter of taste. :S )

  • Oooh, he has such a beautiful voice. I really don't get why people fight over his or Tommy's version - seriously, both versions are fantastic and, most importantly, very different from each other.

  • Quite good for a cover, but not as good

    as the original. ( watch?v=MYfpcddXWxk )

  • It's 100 times better than the original

  • To much vibrato...

    Sings like a Crooner!

  • Like a Crooner!

    Is that a joke?

No one will EVER sing this song as good as Anthony Warlow... you know nothing

  • Anyone who says Warlow lacks passion should be shot!!

He is brilliant, he voice has SOOOOO much passion in it, it moves people!!

Warlow is the greatest singer of all time!!

  • I totally agree with you! People who think Anthony Warlow sings lame should be beaten up. Well, perhaps not beatened up, but at least they should know they know nothing of this kind of music. Anthony's not lame, he's just got dignity enough not to throw himself around on the stage like a scald hen. His voice and expressions is sublime, and perfect as they are. I love him, he's the best singer I have ever heard!!! <333

  • I think this is surely the best version of "anthem". He beats Josh Groban, and Tommy's version by far.

  • Warlow is the man, no doubt about it! If you love this song and would like to hear the most powerful and original version out there, go to Myspace Music and check out a guy named Kurt Bowen...it will absolutely BLOW YOU AWAY!!

  • David Carrol

  • this is nice and correct, but I agree with people saying he lacks the passion. Warlow is still an amazing singer though, but this is and will always be Tommy's song:P

please check out my version by clicking on to my youtube channel, and post some comments if you enjoy it.

    cheers:)

  • For me, Anthony's got the passion. If you don't like it, that's ok. But to question whether Anthony likes to sing? Nonsense. How come one who battled with cancer in order to sing doesn't like singing? As I've said You are free to state that you like someone else better, but you don't need to bash others to praise your own idol.

  • @yajunwindbell He didn't "battle with cancer in order to sing" - he battled with Cancer in order to LIVE. Certainly singing has always been a large part of his life but let's neither trivialise nor dramatise anyone's battle with cancer. I can certainly also understand someone believing that, in general, Anthony is more of a "technician" as a singer ("one-take Tony" as they used to call him) and can come across as cold and emotionless - more "perfect" than passionate.

  • @rEaLwebel "his country" is himself- this is the anthem for Individualism against the savagery of collectivism and nationalism

  • @rEaLwebel I agree. You said well: Körberg for the win.

  • @rEaLwebel

Korberg's got a great voice - but a different interpretation of the song. That's perfectly valid. The opening instruction in the sheet music of this song is "Andante cantabile" or "Like a hymn" some performers interpret a song based on character, and some based on music. I could as well ask "Does Korberg actually like to sing at all, or does he just prefer to squint melodramatically and alternately sigh and yell on pitch?" They've each got their interpretations - dif'rent strokes

  • @rEaLwebel You obviously don't know anything about Anthony Warlow. I suggest you do some research - Jeckyll and Hyde. Warlow's performance is so far above the rest, every version since has been written down because no one can sing it.

Warlow could stand on one leg hopping whilst playing a trumpet and still sing with more power than Tommy Korberg.

  • I listened to Tommy Körbergs version just before this and got goosebumps over my arms many times but this just doesn't do it for me. Sorry mr Warlow. For me feeling and passion ranks higher then technical skill when it comes to music.

  • When it comes to feelings, it's a pure subjective matter and anyone has his own preferences. But you do realize Anthony is better in technique aspect. That's good, coz technique is a more objective criterion.

  • @yajunwindbell

yea, a 18 y.o could have better technique.doesnt make him a better singer though

  • I'm sure this would kick ass if he sang it again now, with better recording devices :) the voice kinda drowns in the music here :(

  • Who cares about technique when the körberg version is better?

Music is about passion and feeling if it sounds better it is better then it dont matter if he got better technique.

  • This is definetely up there with Tommy Körberg's performances with this song, brilliant, better than many other versions!

  • listen to Nora Foss Al Jabri`s version at the norwegian tanlent show: norske talenter.

Thats an awesome version from a twelve year old girl.

  • Search "Tommy Körberg sing anthem" and hold on to your socks...

  • He sings so effortlessly it's amazing. I have to agree that Korberg doesn't stack up vocally to Warlow. Every time I have heard Warlow live, andin every recording that I have heard, he is consistently brilliant vocally, not to mention and extremely expressive performer.

  • I think Korberg sings it more effortlessly than Warlow.

  • I'm gonna have to disagree. Warlow has a much better technique. You could argue that Korberg's version is more passionate and you might say it's better, but overall, Warlow has a better technique.

  • I think you've hit the nail on the head!!

Korberg's version IS much more passionate while Warlow's is (arguably)technically better!! But I still prefer Korberg's version - maybe it was because it was the first version I heard!! To me the song seems to be written for him!!

    x

  • I prolly stick my head up for a beating here, but I must say that Tommy Körberg do Anthem better than Andy Warlow. I'm not saying that Mr. Warlow do Anthem badly, but not as good as Tommy Körberg. Maybe it's because I'm from Sweden, as is Tommy, or it might be that Anthem was written for Tommy by Björn and Benny for the Chess musical.

  • the man at the peak of his singing career!!!!!!!!! just listen to that better than sex!!!!

  • Let man's petty nations tear themselves apart...whew powerful

  • I had a friend who lived next door to him years ago and would have front row seats each day as he practiced for hours.

  • Wow, I'm so envious of your friend! Lol.

  • Love it.

  • Im' so hooked on this song. and him.

  • I am sick and tired of people thinking tommy korberg is the best. Warlow beats him on this. Period.

  • Agreed.........what else is there to say....

  • I agree also....anthony warlow's voice is just so full and powerful

  • Ah! This song gives me the shills !! Bravo!!

  • Great performence, no on sings this like Tommy Korberg though. Still very good :)

  • alexmz123 that is so true @ 9000.7777776666%

  • Anthony Warlow, no one can ever sing like you!! You are forever in our hearts. Sincerely, Alex, Rodel and Raymond.

  • that is amazing - no matter who else has done it :)

  • he is god but he is no Tommy

  • lol you're right - he IS god!!

  • Im not saying this cuz he is the original but tommy's is the best and ive hear them all. This was good as well. But tommy still takes the cake.

  • effortless! this song almost doesnt seem challenging to him at all

  • I agree to the fact that he is truely awesome, however on a personal note in my own opinion michael ball is the greatest male vocalist around. Ive seen him live twice and hes brought me to tears on both occasions

  • Anthony Warlow is just...out of this world. As far as I am concerned, he is the greatest male vocalist I've ever heard...and I've heard a lot.

  • not bad but no korberg

  • such a beautiful man..i adore him.

  • wow, this is one of the best versions of this song i have ever heard!!

  • I´m sorry, but to me, the word "start" disappears because of the vibrato

  • Pretty good, but not close to Korberg.

  • Not even in the same league as Tommy..

  • OMFG, so much ignorance

  • you only say that because Tommy was the original

  • Thank you. I'm sick of hearing he's the best.

  • That was in reference to Tommy Korberg.

  • i loved it

  • I'm sorry but.... eh???? Tommy does this SOOOOO much better in my opinion

  • YES... IN YOUR OPINION

  • I'm not saying that he can't sing (because he obviously can), I'm just saying that I think Tommy sings this song better. And after all, it is his song...

  • Deleted a few comments. Like it or not, please try to behave yourselves.

  • listening to this for the millionth time and my heart still skips a beat when he hits that end note ^^ LOVE IT!

  • That is freaking fantastic! Thanks so much for posting this!

  • *strokes his pretty hair*

  • Wow, this is when he had hair! Or is that a toupee?

  • He'd got a good mop of hair before cancer. He isn't born to be bald...but he does not bother to wear a toupee after cancer, except for theatre shows.

  • yes, of course, thanks.

  • not bad but it's korborg's song

  • pfffffff, OMG. pleaseeeeeeee

  • funy thing is you don't se him as enjolras

  • he totally owns this song. his build to the final phrase and then note is perfect. christmas carol? a likely story. this is what it's about: control.

  • i miss david carrol

  • Anthony is truly incredible. What an amazing singer and actor...always perfect...*sigh* Love his hair, too! ;) Brilliance, right here, in audio and visual form!!

  • I mean, I am not stupid, of course the man can sing and in addition very well, but there is a difference between being tecnically good and actually reaching the listener, and he does not do that for me

  • Thank you for posting it, Anthony Warlow is without a doubt the best musical singer today, he has so much control of his voice he's just simply brilliant!

  • yajunwindbell i know this is gonna sound really picky and technical but in music of the night it only go's up to a Ab not a high A although im sure he can make an A sound just as wonderful

  • It does sound really picky and technical, but mostly uninformed since EVERYONE sings the Ab, because it is WRITTEN to be an Ab. Next time examine the score or just listen to a recording and check the pitch instead of assuming.

  • I´ve sunged this song many times and It´s in the key D-natural. Listen to Tommy Körbergs original recording here on youtube the high notes are G first a short note before the instumental part then the long one "where"(would I start)then two short ones before the end.

  • Please come check out my version of ANTHEM from Chess and tell me what you think.

  • I give him credit for making it look effortless.

  • Thank you. It's been a while since I've tried to call a pitch. That's the beauty of opinions haha.

See, why can't people respond like that? everyone loses their tempers haha.

  • You know, Warlow sings it well. He doesn't lose pitch, and he makes that A sound effortless. Cut him some slack. Everyone totes tommy because it was written for him, but to be honest, I could listen to anyone sing it.
