He was given full scholarship to Tanglewood - you can verify this on Wikipedia. His discovery was about the age of 16 - he delivered milk and sang on the milk truck and one of the noted conductors of his time, heard him coming down the street - ultimately took him aside and offered to pay for his entire scholarship. It's a magical story and he was a magical man - my favorite tenor after 60 years of listening to him, and always will be.
@oldladyplayspiano Luvya! Notes on back of Great Caruso (Movie) LP had it that conductor of Boston Symphony Orch., Serge Kussevitsky, heard him and made remarks like the ones you mention. One thing for sure, Serge took him up to Tanglewood (1941? 1942? and mebbe again after the war). So mebbe it was Serge. Serge allegedly said: greatest natural voice since Caruso. Thegreatluigi's mum actually, but I just wanted to say thanks for this post. My dad was a life long Mario Lanza fan, and we played this at his funeral two years ago. We saw him in to this, and out to "I'll walk with God" I doubt I'll ever listen to Mario without crying, just like my dad used to.
@pinkcuppycake1223 I can HONESTLY tell you that there are many LANZA's still alive, related to this talented singer. And believe it or not, i am one of them(: My name is Trina Lanza, daughter of Christopher David Lanza, who is great-grandson of Mario Lanza...
@pinkcuppycake1223 -- Just read that you are related to Mario Lanza. That is amazing to hear. He had one of the most powerful yet controlled voices. There are few singers who match the reverence he interprets. Are any of your relatives singers? While driving during rush-hour traffic, I play Mario's albums (tape) and it makes the trip enjoyable. About 25 years ago, I studied with one of Mario's coaches, Dr. Dear Verhines of Hollywood.
@tonivaldez - I love Pavarotti too, but Lanza, I believe, has more intensity and feeling for most selections, which may not be acceptable for the interpretation of arias, etc.
I have some digitally enhanced pieces by Lanza on a CD and his voice was rich and beautiful. Unfortunately the early recording technology hid all the beautiful nuances in his voice. He really was one of the greatest tenors ever.

I think you can stop looking Yoni...No where in this recording...or in any other for that matter is the great Mario Lanza off pitch and to even suggest such a thing is laughable.............
Some of us want to hear a great singer singing a great song. Those who nick pik present your piece and astound us with your presentation. I have no time for those who say this or that. Show us your best and be evaluated. And we will see what you have to say you can deliver. And we will evaluate your presentation.
I think when it comes down to the delivery of the song. Us mere mortals enjoy what is presented and it is good.
To take it further perhaps those who have something to say can give us a presentation of their example of the piece and enlighten us with their deliverance they deem as being perfect.
Life is not about being perfect but touching those arouind you and I feel Mario did that. I love this and I believe no other can deliver The way he did..
Towamba isn't completely wrong...the pitch is not always perfect, and at 1.13 for example he's very sharp. Actually I never heard these kind of pitch problems from Mario, I really believe he has a wonderful voice. He was a great singer.
@Towamba u must be tone deaf then, because i've been brought up with this for over 30 years and i have never ever heard him sing a note out of place !!!
@Towamba yer jealous. He was a great singer. I know because I dont care much for Opera singing. But his voice was natural and unaffected and very distinctive- that is very rare for Opera. Who cares what he looked like. He was an ugly guy or anything. Most people would give anything to sing like that.
my mum has her funeral tomorrow and she is having this song as she is brought into the church then the lords prayer then i walk with god as they take her from the church i love and miss you so much mum r.i.p x x x x
One of the maybe dozen of great voices of the 20th Century. He appeared only twice on the operatic stage. What a shame that he got caught up in the movie industry and abused his gift with food and alcohol..
He will remain forever young and at the height of his powers.
Thanks to all of you who aren't as old as I, and still can feel the same as I do each time I hear Mario sing. Some argue about who was the greatest tenor. When all is said and done it doesn't matter. Does the singer take you to that place out of time and space ? Do you see/feel the joy, love, respect that the great songs deserve ? Mario died when I was only 8. If you sing at all (and enjoy it) then you know that the greatest singer is the one who loves to sing for the sake of the song.
I was 12, and I know my mother worshipped him. She was heartbroken when he died. She instilled a love of good music in me. 50 years later I'm rediscovering his sweet, powerful tenor.
Fantastic, breathtaking, and unbelievable rendition of one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Lanza and Pavarotti, my two favorite tenors. 500 stars. Pete.
I'd like to address bacassa. You stated that Lanza made 7 movies, but actually he made 8 of them. The one you may be missing was the only non MGM movie he made. It was "Serenade" made at Warner Brothers. It is in my opinion, his best. He was the greatest.
Not only his voice, but also the feeling... I was in love with him when I was 10, a movie... what movie was it? And yes, God bless you, my darling Mario
Mario L. (according to a TV ad I recall from the 1970s) sang lead for a medieval (or Baroque) era choral piece who lyrics began something like "...Men of France around us...break the chains that bind us...to Hell with Burgundy!..." The latter 'Burgundy' referring to the principality of Burgundy that for a time threatened (with the aid of Britain) to overthrow the nat'l French gov't during the 100yrs war. I can't say thankful I'd be to hear (again) this song after so many yrs by Mario himself.
totally agree with you no one has even came close to comparing with the maestro. Mario was the greatest voice in history and will never be forgotten as long as the fans like ourselves keep introducing music lovers to him. God bless you Mario.
I've started voice lesssons and am finding it hard to roll my Rs so someone reccommended this song as a way to learn how to do it. I hadn't really heard of Lanza before now but he is an amazing singer.... fingers crossed he'll teach me how to roll my Rs!!!
nice performance,he sounds like fritz wunderlich,
but i prefer luciano pavarotti and andrea bocelli.
if you a tenor, then you can understand the different between them all

Dear bullies,
See that boy you made fun of for reading a book? Last night his best friend committed suicide.
See that girl you called fat? She is starving herself.
See that old man you just made fun of cause of the ugly scars? He fought for our country.
See that young boy you made fun of for crying? His mother is dying.
Repost this if you are against bullying. I bet 95% of you won't.
Your life is probably not as harsh as theirs.
If it is... definitely repost :) help them out

Some of us want to hear a great singer singing a great song. Those who nick pik present your piece and astound us with your presentation. I have no time for those who say this or that. Show us your best and be evaluated. And we will see what you have to say you can deliver. And we will evaluate your presentation.
Budgie195 1 year ago
I think when it comes down to the delivery of the song. Us mere mortals enjoy what is presented and it is good.
To take it further perhaps those who have something to say can give us a presentation of their example of the piece and enlighten us with their deliverance they deem as being perfect.
Life is not about being perfect but touching those arouind you and I feel Mario did that. I love this and I believe no other can deliver The way he did..

Mario Lanza off-pitch.... ahahahahah!!
Hke186 1 year ago
Towamba isn't completely wrong...the pitch is not always perfect, and at 1.13 for example he's very sharp. Actually I never heard these kind of pitch problems from Mario, I really believe he has a wonderful voice. He was a great singer.
Kletian86 1 year ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
The guy looks funny but his voice is definitely overrated... he has his range but is always off pitch :-D
But the song is of course... awesome!
Towamba 1 year ago
@Towamba Really? He's off pitch? Please tell me where in this recording he is off pitch and I'll gladly check the score and check.
Yoni89 1 year ago 19
@Yoni89 The melisma's sound "off pitch" because they aren't as fluid and smooth as some singers IMO. That's probably what he means.
malcolmx919 1 year ago
@Yoni89 he repeatedly is off pitch during the piece.
luisitosax 11 months ago
@Yoni89 The thought of Lanza being off pitch is hard to fathom given his insane drive for perfection!

@Towamba u must be tone deaf then, because i've been brought up with this for over 30 years and i have never ever heard him sing a note out of place !!!
mardy68 1 year ago 2
@Towamba yer jealous. He was a great singer. I know because I dont care much for Opera singing. But his voice was natural and unaffected and very distinctive- that is very rare for Opera. Who cares what he looked like. He was an ugly guy or anything. Most people would give anything to sing like that.

If you sing at all (and enjoy it) then you know that the greatest singer is the one who loves to sing for the sake of the song.
notyeroldman 2 years ago
I was 12, and I know my mother worshipped him. She was heartbroken when he died. She instilled a love of good music in me. 50 years later I'm rediscovering his sweet, powerful tenor.

Outstanding, there'll never be another Mario Lanza..

This is the kind of music that transcends the limits of space and goes beyond the reach of old age.

@zeus9002 Mario Lanza was quite simply the greatest singer of alltime. His voice was made in Heaven. This is quite simply perfection.

@bigttim1 Yep, agreed 100%.
