I don't know much about Ellroy. But there is more wisdom in that six minute interview then there is in a one hour interview with most other writers.
I consider him a horror writer. Not because horror is his genre, which it is not. But his writing style is so dark and fearsome it eclipses anything supernatural you'll find in Stephen King. And I'm not surprised to find he read witchcraft books as a child.
He may be totally fucking insane. But really - his mother was murdered when he was ten? I'm sure you all know how that feels...NOT! He's accomplished more in his life than any of you haters ever will - so fuck you.
Ellroy's interviews are always wonderful. Check out the two he did with Conan O'Brien in the nineties, they're both available here on YouTube. As well as a very fine interview with (I think) Miranda Sawyer, when he was out promoting Blood's A Rover.
... a great interview with even greater answers - I just wish there were 100 questions put forward. I await impatiently, for my bookstore to provide me with my ordered copy of The Hilliker Curse.
@AnnArckey If this wasn't enough there's more Ellroy stuff on YouTube. He's always entertaining. If you have access to LA, San Fran or NYC I would suggest seeing him on tour. Even if you have to drive a few hours it will be well worth it. Once you hear the Demon Dog read from his own book you will never read his work the same again. After seeing him, all I can hear is his voice and delivery when I read his works and it enhances the experience tenfold.
@yojimbo81- I would love to hear Ellroy on a tour, but sadly, I doubt he will be coming to Manchester, UK any time soon. I have viewed a few clips on YouTube of his readings - he is a wonderful reader aswell as writer, but that was no surprise. I came to appreciate Ellroy, by stumbling across an old documentry he did for the BBC, it was an Arena film (Feast of Death) - it was one of the most amazing TV experiences I have ever had - he is so damned fascinating! ... I really loved My Dark Places.
@AnnArckey It was 'My Dark Places' that also got me into Ellroy. And BBC2's 'Feast of Death' consolidated that passion. And I'm also disappointed that he won't be comging to UK. Great to come across people who also feel equally passionate about a much misunderstood writer.
Ellroy is a compelling speaker. And Rebecca has not only picked the right questions to put to him, but has also responed well on the spot. Love that bit when she querries about the fact that all the books she saw in his office were those by Ellroy himself.
@ZachClooney He sure is a compelling speaker! I went to an informal book signing (in Australia) years ago and chatted briefly with him. It was quite a while ago but I can remember it perfectly. He was calling out across the book store "buy my books! They're better than drugs and safer than sex!" Love it!
Too much Too late. But it sells books.

Wait so he was LYING when he claimed Steve Hodel had finally solved the murder???
Or was that just for the paycheck he received to write the foreword??

Love that cat. Not too many people will tell you exactly what they think when posed a question on camera. He'd make a lousy politician.

Heres a couple of questions for James Ellroy:
Why sound like a fucktard when you speak?
Were you always a blowhard?

@AnnArckey Agree. For once, Ellroy has been given a good interviewer who is not intimidated by the great man!
