Tom, I have been using this approach to perform all of my Ableton songs live, but what is the best way to go about dealing with differences in the native tempo of the songs? It looks like all of your tracks are the same tempo, mine are different. Is there an easy way to manage this?
How does your BPM change within your super monster mega set? I assume not all 'songs' have the same BPM. Is it something you have memorized and change it via midi controller?
@JoeWojoJoeWojo Most DJ's do in fact have their entire performance at a set BPM, and many electronic genres are distinguished by their bpm (hip-hop=90, house=128-130, dubstep=140, dn'b=180 etc.) If BPM changes occur live it's during a tension building part with little to no percussion.
Your video should be qualified as an AD as you charge $120 a year for a membership. I'm sick of everyone trying to make money on the internet. Very few people are out there genuinely trying to help others.
@johncowperwood Don't be ridiculous. Whats the problem with this guy trying to make some money? He's taken the time to learn how to use his tools effectively and creatively, (tools which don't come cheap I might add) so why shouldn't he try to earn a living by passing on his knowledge. Also, he's uploaded plenty of really helpful tutorials for free.
@johncowperwood You're sounding like an ungrateful teenager. You should feel good about contributing to his life when he contributes so much to yours. Drop the gimme gimme attitude and wake up. I hope you're mature enough to really look at what your message is saying and what that says about you as a person.
On a lighter note, thanks for the awesome videos, Tom! Hope life is well wherever your amazing accent is from! Haha
Have you guys seen the Windows 7 equipped StudioBLADE keyboard workstation from Music Computing? The integrated controller works beautifully with Ableton. Check out the videos on our profile! Follow the link below!
you are a genius. :) great improvised system with the 6 elements across 3 "tracks." kudos, man!! (and i completely agree with "tastelesstouch" below) ... cheers! soundcloud / ep0ch
It's people like this that keep the music going. So many musicians are reluctant to talk about the gear they use because they fear that people will buy it up and tyr to mimic it. However, the reason those artists sound the way they do is not because of the gear they use but because it is them who is creating the music. It is their style and it translates over. Keep up the good work Tom!
you have way to much spare time and if i tried this my computer would set ablaze....are you planing to publish the template because i really like the concept
TOM! First of all, Many thanks for everything that you do, im in the middle of working on a live set right now based on your wonderful model of your "mega set" Once I get some money flowing through my bank ill be sure to donate!
My dream setup that I am working on now is kinda like this but its 2 decks for mixing full tracks, third channel for acapellas, then channels 4-7 for loops and live midi recording. I am in awe that you pull thsi off so well im a little over my head but can play along with piano and drum sets while I do live mashups which is the most fun I have ever had "playing" music
I really admire your work. Your tutorials is just amazing.
I have a question regarding this template. I just bought a AKAI APC40 and when I'm trying to midi map stuff like the Send A,B or C on this template to a knob on my midi-controller..... I can't! Ableton Live dosent recognize that I'm turning a knob in midi-mapping mode:( What's up with that? Please help!
I want to start doing my sets like this, although I have a question about vst synths. Do you just change patches or do you turn them into audio clips?
it's not like you know what was wrong with it. all i had to do it re-download it, the wavs got fucked-up the first time. sorry, huuuge fail on my part. -_-
Tom, Im also wondering why you dont use Sends for your fx? Arent they designed for this purpose??
Also, when moving from Studio (arrangement) to Live performances (clip) do you turn off ALL effects (eg: crash reverbs etc) before doing this or do you process the sound after moving into Live setup? ? Am i making sense at all??
subbed to your site that set is awesome im going to base my set templates of it mixing in a few of my ideas...when its ready ill upload it to your forums ....are you planning to get a apc because if you are maybe adding two tracks or two more spacer tracks would make sense so that you can switch using shift to the each part of the set more easily.
loving your work when you have the time can you make a turorial on your lead sounds?
Wow, this video has been incredibly eye opening. I have been playing with Ableton for about a year now as a way to incorporate many loops into my hiphop sets (it's lovely for scratching on top of them). But I never really considered breaking full songs down into components to do live remixing... thank you for the ideas! My trigger finger will actually get to be fully used. :D
I have a problem setting up layers. I have a software synth that I use in live, and when i have finished a melody line or anything, I want to change patch and create another piece of the song. But in this case, when i change patch (even thou i have created a new "box"), the melody that i previously did will change the sound to the new patch (but still the same melody "pattern") that is active on the softsynth. Is it not possible to have more than one layer with one soft synth? Or how do I save?
tom Cosm thank you very much for sharing all your Live knowledge, i first saw your "moving from the studio to live performance" video on Vimeo, and i gotta say its a nice approach on simplifying the job. I like your stuff
