They both represent each other bottom line, and as far as I'm concerned he is a shitty trainer, not letting his Pikachu evolve just like in the Anime, and using that Pikachu as his top Pokemon. He is a very predictable trainer. Furthermore, Red/fire red and Blue/leaf green games recommend you to choose Ash as Red's name, and Gary as Blue's name at the beginning. Gold/Ethan isn't restricted to just being in those two regions but that's besides the point as whatever happens in the pokemon movies is not canon with any events that happen in the games, manga or anime anyways.
