Tim great project. Thanks for posting with so much detail. I am hoping to undertake something similar in the eastern panhandle of WV. Where are you? I am interested in the 6x6 posts for the foundation. Are they sitting on concrete footers? How deep is the frostline where you are? Sorry for so many questions.
@cgm0826 In the county where I live, there are no codes or permits. However, most of the townships here are zoned. They wouldn't even think of letting me build this small where there is zoning. I chose a township just west of here that has no zoning, no permits, etc. The only thing I have to have inspected and permitted is the well and septic. They couldn't care less what the house is, just that the well and septic are up to code and the permit is paid for.
Awe.....but there is a vapor barrier. As a matter of fact, I worked all day yeasterday working on just that. There will be an updated video soon and you will see what I mean. As for foundation vents, the crawl space will be heated. That is where the plumbing will enter underground from the well and up to the floor so the pipe won't freeze. That will avoid heat tape. There is 3" of styrofoam inside the foundation skirting.
Nice. Was the driveway sealer on the subfloor just for protection from the weather during construction? Looks like it will be a nice cabin when you are done.
Yes, that is an old trick I learned years ago while building a log house. These days of air nailers and quick construction make it a little less necessary, but I am using the old fasion methods......hammer and nails! lol The driveway sealer will help protect the floor from delamination until the roof is on.
What a grand project. I hope that we'll get to see more leading up to the moment that it's finally built and ready for you to live in. Looking forward to seeing more quite soon. Good luck and stay safe :D
youve got the right idea there bud!!awesome place your building.my plan when the kids are out of the house.peace and quite in the countryside.keep us updated.cant wait to see ya kickin back on that porch.lol!!good luck to ya both.
Wonderful job! We are doing the same thing.. Tire of the crap in town. Headed out to the woods to build our cabin.. How I plan to grow old with the wife.. Thanks for uploading..
@etrac007 The tugboat was finished except for paint. When this came up, I knew I would have enough irons in the fire. I stuck the tugboat on Craigslist and sold it in 3 days. She went to a guy with a marina in the Portage Lakes area of N.W. Ohio. He is going to paint it with advertising for his marina. "Kiefer's Marina"
Wow Tim looks like it will be nice. Will this be your primary residence or is it a getaway place? Now to make it really authentic you need a privy out back lol! Looking forward to your updates ....fascinating!
Thanks Tony. This will be our primary residence. We are selling all our "stuff" that now fills our 2500 square foot Victorian home. The house will be for sale in the spring. We are tired of cleaning, heating, cooling and maintianing space we only use once a year. Back to the simple life! :-)
