why do u call them static stretches? So long as u do them properly isn't stretchin just stretchin? Cuz i stretch before and after workouts am I not supposed to do that?
No, you have dynamic stretches and static stretches. Static stretches are holding stretchings, and dynamic is movement, such as leg swings and arm circles. Doing static for extended
Nice video. Your arms look like you are trying to fly though. 90 degrees and moving them close to your body would help a lot! Other than that, great videos and great tutorials.
Thats why I never was a long jumper lol... I ALWAYS scratched.... But these hurdles were setup randomly so I didnt have an accurate approach with the spacing between the hurdles, and it was my first high hurdle jumps in a long time.
For a higher jump, is it best to do explosive leg strength exercises (like jumps) only, or should I still incorporate slow max strength leg training (like squats) into my training? I feel like my legs are really strong, but I cant jump high, e.g release my strength quickly.
So how high did you high jump back in your track days? and how high are you tryna jump now? ima long jumper who loves track so i am very interested to see how you fair in the track world
Not great, I guess you can say ok but not high enough to want to continue at a 4 year university. i had more fun flipping not going to lie, even though i love track... Its hard balancing both. my highest 6'6" off a 5 step watch?v=gj42vxYf3Lc
My knee injury came from the gymnastics floor, not track. But thats the risk you run for being an athlete, if your afraid then you might want to stick to a sport like golf or ping pong ;)
Arash, you should to a whole video on stretching especially how to stretch right before a competition because you don't want to do static stretches that much before, right?
Thank you very much! I love your videos. They are instructional and very useful. I am getting over a blown out achilles tendon and was wondering if you had any ideas for exercises / pt, that might help me get back to running etc.. sooner. Best regards.
yo , i was wondering do this exercises also help you in doing backflips , front flips aerials etc , i've never done flips , im 17 and im 1.79meters (sorry i dont know how much is tha in inches and i don't even know if height is necessary for flips lol) , i had an ankle problem a year ago , it still hurts though when it rains or its cold , or when the temperature is wet , so what kinds of exercises should i do to get jump height for flips ?
Thats good that you do most your streaching after your workout, static streaching before a power exercise has been proven too decrease power. All the mobilisation you did was spot on tho. Have you heard of PAP training post activation potentiation. Its been proven that lifting a heavy weight before a power exercise increases max power. So for example if you did 4 sets of 2 squats at say 90% of your 1 rep max then waited 5mins and then went and done your max vertical jump, you will jump higher.
It's from this cartoon Samurai Jack if you've heard of it. hehe.
Really nice video man! Ive been wanting to get better at jumping high because I train parkour and feel like I have focused too much on the upper body lately. ( not that I feel I have any major results from it, haha )
I got told by my physio after I suffered a basketball knee injury to make sure I land on both feet simultaneously when doing jumps, because otherwise only leg absorbs all of the landing impact instead of both, which can cause injury. I'm confused after seeing your video now what to do in regards to my pylometrics training.
Your trainer is right. But you must also take this into consideration- how high of an obstacle are you jumping over, off of, or how high are you dropping from? I would say train off of one leg with both take off and landing, but be very aware of what you are doing. There are many times that we'll land on one leg, or jump off one leg just because of the sports we do. With that being said, I would advise you to train off one leg, but limit it and listen to your body.
I'm just curious because I have been following Strength Project and you (Arash) for awhile but would you consider yourself pretty flexible? I know flexibility can be a contributing factor in jumping
No that was my weakness... Flexibility... Sometimes instead of arching over the bar, I would be in the sitting position. But yes, flexibility will make you much more fluid and efficient in the air. Balancing it all is the way!
Ideally you want to do split cycle lunge jumps, but I didnt feel comfortable doing those as I just recovered from the injury. I'll be doing those later in the year. :)
@strengthproject ok great thanks - i used to have knee trouble - then i found a great warm up to protect knees - its 20 prison squats - 20 side to side jumps over a cone (small) and then forward and back on the cone - repeated 3 times - My knees have been good now for the last 4 years and i jump and sprint and kickbox
