But what do we do with the kids who just don't give a shit? Who come from homes where education isn't valued, and where kids have learned to be dumb is cool and to be smart isn't?
Coal mining is more IT intensive than education!!??! It's because education took all the minors away from mining and stuck them in schools. The mining industry obviously had to replace all that cheap labour somehow..

I'm sorry, but kids are not "researching", "collecting data", and providing "rich content" outside the class room via Twitter, IM, SMS, etc. I agree that the classroom needs to change and adapt to the changes in our culture and technological advances; but kids are fooling around on such mediums... not "collecting data."
Yes, get technology in the hands of our teachers. Yes, reform and adapt teaching to today. But don't deliver a load of B.S. about what students are doing outside the class.
@michaeltangen do you think that maybe students are 'fooling around' because no one has shown them the wealth of information available? Where did you find your research that students are not researching, collecting data etc? I am a university student, I receive updates from my unit coordinator via Twitter re: interesting sites and articles that may assist in our learning. Unless you can say for certain that students are not doing as claimed, you maybe should choose your words more carefully.
Its an exciting way of learning established today. And school isnt just going to be able to provide to all the skills students need to survive the years to come -- teamwork, creativity, multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural, information literacy, communication, problem solving.
Maybe students are not really terrible in school if their exams were to based on performance on these NEW skills rather than single answer exams.
IT IS THE DEATH OF EDUCATION, BUT THE DAWN OF LEARNING. Wow controversial.
I definitely that technology is a necessity for the future of education. The current generation, and certainly future generation, of students are digital natives. They are used to functioning on a daily basis with the use of technology. Not including this technology in the classroom is negligent especially because technology is beneficial for both the teacher and student. The student is used to being around technology constantly (Cont...)
outside of school, so bringing the technology into the classroom makes the students feel comfortable and provides and effective way to learn. For the teacher, technology provides a different way to teach a particular concept; usually more efficient, enhancing or effective than when taught without the use of technology. It might take time for the teacher to catch up with the shifts in technology, but the benefits are endless.
I couldn't have put it better -" The death of education, the beginning of learning." I'm seriously thinking of taking my 8yo son out of school. He learns more with me in a day with electronic connectivity and communication than he learns in a week at his school.
Thank you Pearson Foundation for producing a narrative that will ignite conversations that provokes academic communities to deal with new media technology in the classroom. I also want to indirectly thank The Obama campaign IT team for boldly initiating the use of this amazing platform of expression. LaRon | @laroncarter
Oh, the stories I could tell you around this discussion of my recent years of teaching K-12 lessons with and without the freedom of using new media technology in my classroom. Whatever I can do to help educate.
Will Durant said, Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance. Educators didnt we learn anything from CNN Live and Facebook on January 20, 2009?
The saying by Mark Twain reflects upon education in this world, He said " I do not let my schooling interfere with my education." The schooling in my country is so very theorotical that people just mug up answers and get good grades. You ask them what is the meaning of what they wrote and the are scarecrows. Nobody's knows what they wrote in the exam or test, but they know it is correct. Later in life, while doing a job they suffer.
What they have right is this - "school" is about education, however, "education" isn't necessarily about school. "School" ought to be wherever the student is and, more importantly, "human being" and "student" ought to always be synonymous with one another from birth. I'm a passionate advocate for lifelong learning. I'm 48 and, in my opinion, the years spent in school were a hindrance to education more than an intense benefit. Personal passion to learn made and makes that true to this day.
It used to be called "Classic Education" (sans masturbatory trendoid tech, like 'Twittering'). The same rules for writing great papers or dissertations are identical to those for creating magnetic-evergreen sites. The medium is not solely the message. Content is king, and the classically educated are content's emperors.
hahaha...nice title! it caught my attention

A big assumption that taking away standards will result in creativitiy. How will we monitor whether teachers provide learning at higher levels?

Me as a student.
I feel like school is more and more like the place that i just go there sitting in a room studying
something that as i think back for over 5 years in high school more than 80% of all the lessons
were there i need to know because i need to use it in exams!
And it useless in real life.
They didn't teach you to live and learn.
Feel like 5 years i'm in high school was all for nothing.all those just for exams!
I want to "learn" not to "know"!
