I understand that I heard her REMAKE of the Pata Pata song in '07, on some radio station here in Northern Virginia. She could sing that song (and probably still dance the dance!) until the day she passed. She's probably up there right now, dancing with Michael Jackson, James Brown, and Fred Astaire...
My mother took me to see her at the Hollywood Bowl in the 60's. My mother died on November 11, 2008, the day after Miriam did. May they both be dancing and singing in the joy of God.

WHAT!? She died!? How did I miss this? Oh wait, the fucking news channels would rather report on untalented, useless piece of worthless shit like AMY CRAPHOUSE instead of talented singers who made a difference like Miriam Makeba. It's like when Princess Diana and Mother Theresa died on the same day - nobody gave a shit about Mother Theresa because the death of Princess Di was more glamorous. How pathetic. RIP M. Makeba. And FUCK YOU AMY SKANKHOUSE. Take your fucking bullshit with you into hell.
@jakemiller5000 SHE died performing in italy her heart stoped while she was singing pata pata they could not revive her but atleast she died doing what she loved most
I've listen some songs of her a long time ago. But it's juste on 2009 that I found out she was the singer of a beautiful arabic song "Ifriquia" (africa) and the nice song Ana Horra fil djazair, (I am free in Algeria).
first time i heard it on a honda commercial i needed to know who sang wow a beautiful woman it brought tears to my eyes. rest in peace mama africa.....
If I were the Angel @ Heaven's gate n I see Mama Africa stranded, I wud open the gate lock th others out while I show her around first then probably come back 2 attend 2 th rest. Long live ua piece of art Makeba!
i first heard the album with her and harry belafonte in 1968. the album was made in 1959. my 5th grade teacher played the album for our class. it was at the height of the black consciousness movement.
I miss Mama Africa so much! May you be in heaven, rocking the place, and making God sway in delight. It's been almost a year, Mama, and your passing is so difficult.
OMG missed her passing! Now I am v sad today what a strong woman, loved her voice and songs so much, thanks for everything you left behind Miriam my toma x
When I was in the hospital, seeing Miriam Makeba, lush with life, on a TV show, began my healing process. I honor her as a great inspiration in my life.
Long may you and your beautiful memories of Miriam Makeba live.
There are many of her surviving legendary Africa sisters who may help you live even more brightly - do please check out: Oumou Sangare (Mali), Fatou Guewel (Senegal), Amy Koita (Mali), and Kandia Kouyate (Mali).
None are quite like Miraim, but they all inspire in their own way.
Have a happy day bro!
PS: This is not really a plug, but some are on my channel if you need a place to begin listening.
I think it is marvelous that" Youtube" brings Miriam Makeba to the World to me it was Malika the popular Kenyan? song but whatever she was Great and sung beautifully and as a British person (White if it matters any more?) with an African wife I thank you!
From your response, it is obvious you know NOTHING - I am Afrikaans; it is a LANGUAGE, not a race. Keep your mouth shut until you have something sensible to say.
What is that supposed to mean, you ignorant f*ck? I am a white, afrikaans south-african and I love Mama Afrika! How dare you you comment on someone you never knew, about a life and a country you have NO knowledge of? What sacrifice did you ever make? F*ck off you racist b*stard, you are not even worthy of her old shoe-laces!

RIP.
Et a vous autres qui poursuivez le combat: sechez vos larmes; comme le dit si bien l'adage africain, "les morts ne sont pas morts. Ils sont parmi nous"
I am so sorry to hear she passed away. I was just getting to know her music. What a phenomenal woman. What strength, courage, grace and beauty. She had so many qualities that I cannot list them all. May we never forget her endurance and now she is at peace in God's memory resting for a short time.
I too was unaware of the Queen of African Music's demise! Her voice and energy will live on in my heart! I will always return to this YouTube to hear and see her years of Rhythm and Sounds of LIFE! May she always feel the warm embrace of a world that she embraced and uplifted all her life! Peace and Respect to all who felt that embrace!
Ohh Noo!! I had no idea she died...I just found out... So sad... Pata Pata was a BIG hit in 1967 in Chile, and I remember Miriam as such great icon not only for Africa but for World Music. Her contribution is unmeturable. God bless her soul.
i'm shocked. this happened almost a month ago and this is the firt time i've heard of her death. She will be missed but her music will live on cuz she is a true legend.
I was sorry to hear of her passing. Thanks to Daryl Duke, I met her in 1964 in Toronto. My late step-father, Daryl had her perform on his show Q for Quest through the CBC. Harry Belafonte was with her then and had helped to smuggle her out of South Africa, six months before as she was facing prosecution for loving a White South African. She was a classy woman with an awesomely haunting voice and very gracious soul.I'm honoured by having known her
Warface, don't forget we can learn a lot from black people, something we cannot say from you! Respect man, if you don't have any respect for other people stay out and run to hell!
People forget that when Belefonte brought Makeba to New York, she triggered not only a musical revolution but a cultural one as well. African-Americans stopped straightening their hair and going natural. Stars such as Cicely Tyson and Nina Simone began wearing their hair natural and popularized the style they learned from Makeba. Eventhough to most blacks in America it was just a phase or fad, Makeba remained the "A Natural Woman" to the end. May she rest in peace.
Amazing woman and amazing performer! I met Miriam Makeba when I was 12, in my native Cuba and was impressed immediately by her smile and her mesmerizing and energizing stage presence. Her death is a great loss to the world of true and genuine entertainment and to the different causes she fought so much for and to which she lent her voice, talent and passion.
Uhhhmmm... One thing isn't the "poverty and unjustice" in South Africa a LOT worse now? Sorry just asking. Not that I support what was just wish the dream had come true.
No, Apartheid was evil. There were no universities for blacks in Namibia. The only profesions for blacks were primary school teachers and nursing. Permission was neeeded to travel inside the country. Movies showig blacks in good light were banned in Namibia.
Blacks could only address white as "master". Blacks were not allowed to own any land. Blacks were never allowed to vote. Black politicians were put injail, killed and disappeared. Blacks did not have a future under the Apartheid regime.
RIP Miriam Makeba. You gave hope and joy to millions of people worldwide during the SA apartheid era. Your beautiful voice and achievements will be celebrated for many years to come by all those that appreciate humanity.
I am very sad to hear that. i lived for 5 years in South Africa and listen to her music so much. Even in the Restaurant in Cape Town =Mama Afrika= they all payed her songs. I was reading her biograhie and i it is amazing what this woman all did. I think this wonderful black people have so much power and courage to survive so much. I will miss you Mama Africa. a part of the beauty of this outstanding Country will be missed by me. I never felt more home in my life than in South Africa.
Typical Republican racist scum. Another McCain supporter who has revealed his true low-life ways. This woman did more in her life then you and your red-neck family will ever do in the next thousand years. Apartheid destroyed, Obama elected, game, set, match. YOU LOSE.
It seemed the sun had formed a spirit To fill this world with warmth She truly was a blessing being Who gave this world new songs Each of this songs when it was heard It filled the heart with fire Now its November, days seem cold, It seems we lost this fire To this world that surely cries let your tears feed flowers And if then no new sea exists May the heavens join you Let her songs be played again To ease this acing pain Just listen to them and its sure You will smile again
I first heard her music in 1968 on a tape given to me by my uncle. I was immediately captivated by Miriam's voice, but particularly by the passion in her music. Most of the lyrics remain a mystery to me, as I do not understand Xhosa or any other African language. But this is music that touches you deeply, whether or not you understand the lyrics. This is because the music itself transmits so much feeling. Rest in peace, Mama Africa. Thank you so much for all that you have given us.

Blacks could only address white as "master". Blacks were not allowed to own any land. Blacks were never allowed to vote. Black politicians were put injail, killed and disappeared. Blacks did not have a future under the Apartheid regime.

Typical Republican racist scum. Another McCain supporter who has revealed his true low-life ways. This woman did more in her life then you and your red-neck family will ever do in the next thousand years. Apartheid destroyed, Obama elected, game, set, match. YOU LOSE.

The rhythm of her songs just tell you
Dance upon this earth
Just give each of your days a meaning
And fire to the world
Rest in Peace now pretty lady
You have done enough
You gave my heart more songs to sing
You gave this world more love

I first heard her music in 1968 on a tape given to me by my uncle. I was immediately captivated by Miriam's voice, but particularly by the passion in her music. Most of the lyrics remain a mystery to me, as I do not understand Xhosa or any other African language. But this is music that touches you deeply, whether or not you understand the lyrics. This is because the music itself transmits so much feeling. Rest in peace, Mama Africa. Thank you so much for all that you have given us.
