This documents the process of expanding an existing package format, breaking it apart into relevant types of data, and allowing any package manager to install that data, if I understood that correctly. This would allow someone using, say, Fedora to use Ubuntu's software repository, and it would allow someone using Fedora to download a DEB package and be able to use it if they had a converter to do this package expanding.
Regardless of whether or not this package expanding has to be done manually or can be automated, the expanded distro-agnostic data needs to be given a name! Once the data is expanded and has its metadata and other info all properly documenting the program's dependencies and other information, if it will be able to be read properly by all of the major package managers in the future, they should also put it all into a file container and perhaps give it a name, like ".lnx" or ".linux".

What's HarrietTheTiredParrot? I googled that word but came up blank.
for the ostatic link, it's still in Google cache, so I saved the page using the "Web Page, Complete" option in Chromium. I don't know what to do with it, though. Should I post it somewhere?
I think the Software Center developers should look at Steam. They have a good searching method where you can select genre, price, popularity and other criteria. And with the screenshots, video's en summary you can instantly see if the game is something you like. And the payment methods and design are pretty sweet to.
Even if this doesn't turn out to work, the fact that we got all these distros to come together and work on something as one is a big ++ for everything Linux.
Curious. It appears that they're attempting to merge two economies (gift and capitalist) not only within one distribution but, essentially, throughout the entire ecosystem?
Ah, so other distributions will NOT be presenting commercial applications (i.e. Fluendo windows media pack currently found in the Ubuntu Software Centre at $24.99) for sale to their users under this? This is all very hazy right now, could I bother you for a source/further assurance?
what i wrote was meant to be a joke. :P I cannot give you an assurance, because i really don't know. You will have to wait and found out for your self.

So for those of us not willing to watch the whole thing: What is an Appstream?

@Lestibournes
There's a piece on it here: WUHWUHWUH ostatic PERIOD com/blog/one-package-manager-for-them-all
In the video, it was agreed that it was a good idea and a name was given. It's still very early on.

@bobLawblaugh What's the WUHWUHWUH part of the URL supposed to read like? I put the address like this:
TRIPLE-DOUBLE-YOU PERIOD ostatic PERIOD com SLASH blog SLASH one-package-manager-for-them-all
and it didn't work.

@Lestibournes Curious, you're absolutely right. I played around a bit, but no go.
Here's a link to the original linkthru to the article (still working for me):

I really like the "Software Center" combination of words actually... And I really hope RedHat will get involved seriously in that...

I want this to be called AppCross or CrossApp.
Also, this installer should just extract programs into /opt and run scripts to put binaries or links into /opt/bin .. I think that would be best.
If you agree, thumbs up.
