Cell phones are a great tool. If you are riding around and breakdown, you can call someone to come help. If you are running late to a meetup with friends, you can call while on the road. Problem is these days the cell phone has become an entertainment device and as such is used and abused... I don't text, I don't surf the web, I don't play games on my phone. I find it irritating to even try. Mainly cause I'm an old fart and can't see the bloody screen. lol
I could'nt agree more, I have and old phone without internet, because I don't need it, if I want to talk to my friends, I just go visit them, because it's more personal, and you always get offered free food, so bouns !
I totally agree with you, technology has help keep in contact with all but then the core friends and family start to suffer.. and also the thing about the car, drives me nuts.. i'm driving with my girl and want to spend some time talking with her, but she's texting her friend and ignoring me... wtf?!?!
Even though I have a smartphone I never really cared for having a phone. I don't call ppl and they don't call me. I can go MONTHS without one....my dad always told me to use the phone in an emergency and that's what I do. I send letters to friends if they live in a place where there is no cellular service. I know some ppl that treat their phone like its their entire lives and if they don't have it for a week then I have to hear then whine and cry about it -_____-
I'm not that old but I still remember when mobile phones were still new and most people didn't have one. Whenever I wanted to hang out with my peeps I just walk to there house to see what they were doing. And we had a meeting place after school everyday to get the 411 on what plans ect. It was alot more fun that way because you got off your butt and did stuff.
I'm almost too young to remember before mobile phones, and before then I wasn't popular enough to have friends to arrange to meet for coffee. Sometimes when I hear people talk about the world before phones and the internet part of me feels like I have missed out on a golden age when people really connected (and had attention spans) but an even larger part of me knows that we've always felt disconnected from each other, now we just have something to blame for it.
Also, what happened to writing letters. I am guilty on that one. Unlike email, a hand written letter was something that you could actually hold in your hand and feel connected to the person who wrote it, simple, analog and very portable. As for a cell phone, yep, have one, but, hate to use it. Have it for emergencies. Great vlog, LJ.
I do totally agree, but at the same time, I love mobile phones for -that moment-.
When I had my first highside in the middle of nowhere, whilst I laid in the ditch my friend used his phone to work out where we were, and then phone for an ambulance.
Although, as a household we're notoriously difficult to get hold of, in or out the home. Landline or mobile, phones are usually on silent or just left to ring; safe in the knowledge that "If it's important, they'll phone back."
A mobile phone is a preference not an essential item of day to day life. Likewise, social networking sites are a choice. If you think they intrude, just stop using them.
I remember not having a phone for 4 days and it was so peaceful, but when I got my phone back I got yelled at by my dad, gf, aunt and friends that i didnt have a phone =[
I agree with you 100% It is one of my biggest pet peeves. I don't understand why anybody needs facebook, twitter or any of that other crap on a phone. Yes I do have a cell. Its about 6 years old and I text about 3-4 times a month. I will be the first to admit I know nothing about smart phone or I phones or even what blue teeth are about but I do know that when I am talking to someone and there thumbs are traveling a mile a minute on the face plates or keyboards It pisses me off.
Agreed, but I don't think cell phones were so bad. It was the addition of texting, and then the final blow of internet on phones that sucks. Now I'll be waiting at the doctors office or in a lineup and everyone but me has their phones out. When I moved houses earlier this year, I didn't have internet/TV set up for a while and I felt better, I was happier when I was not a slave to the internet. Honestly, I miss talking on msn with friends like we did back in school. Facebook is a sad replacement.
I think it depends on the person. I don't like talking on the phone. And when I'm around people I make it a point to make the phone secondary. But often when alone in other cities, I don't feel alone with my phone. I think in the future technology will be so quick we can interface directly into the central mind gathering place of knowledge to communicate with anyone where ever you are...and pull or block knowledge at will...And being disconnected with that will feel lonely. hmmmm... the borg?
I agree plus I do miss having a day when no body could call and ask for this or that. I got a lot more done back when I was not stoping to take a call or read a text.
I disagree. I have this cool feature called voicemail. If I'm with a friend talking and hanging out and I get a call...with the press of one button the call is dumped to voicemail. Most of the time I have mine on vibrate and the person I'm with has no idea I have an incoming call. I guess its all in how you use the technology. If someone is blowing up my phone...yeah I'll answer it. Otherwise....it can wait
@p0kerp1aya You bring up a great point. It is definitely an issue of boundaries.
However, I must admit I miss the days of literally being out of touch. If I was driving somewhere, or meeting with a friend, you literally could not call me, even on vibrate. It makes life more immediate, less distracting, etc. I just miss it, that's all.
My phone is often off. People complain when they can't get a hold of me. :-/
I agree with you, cept i love my advance phone. ill still love it when it transformers back into a little persocom like Sumomo:P (yeah anime charr). anyways lol, i don't do Facebook often. i love to meet ups but all my friends live too far. for example it be kick ass if i lived in the same state as you. could do joint rides and joint videos now and then. (granted if i also had a bike that could keep up instead of my wimpy 50cc lmao)
@TroyFoxxin Social networking is nice for keeping in touch with those deeper friends you have while they're away. My best friend is in Ecuador right now and I really miss her. I think the healthy boundary, though, is to not be sending her a message *while I'm with a present friend*.
And 50cc's are a blast! I would love to have one to kick around, and for days when my bike is under the weather.
@lauriejennifer I think of 50cc bikes as fun little happy meal toys compared to faster ones. im thinking of selling mine infact. Indiana thinking of changing the laws. forcing plates, and insurance on 50cc and up. right now its just have a ID and be atlest 15. if i have to pay on it i might as well have something faster. More work i plan to put on it should make me half of what i want to buy next. :D
@Dogfacerawr I'd take a horse over a motorcycle. If you think you feel "connected" to your "machine," just imagine the friendship you'd have with a horse.
Bitch then throw away you're cell phone and use the Phone that is connected to you're house.
