  • that guy had/has such a tremendous voice.

  • So, so beautifull.

  • One word.....Brilliant

  • I'm very sorry, but Mark Hollis never returned to recording music. Reunion of Talk Talk is same real thing like comeback The Ramones (ever Hollis and Friese-Greene are alive). That was too long time ago. Mark suffer from any serious mental issues. Many geniuses are very neurotic. He good knows when it needs to leave the scene as unbeatable. Recordning two last albums Talk Talk are undermined. Hollis' solo 1998 album was only fullfill 2 album contract with Polydor and was very over.

  • I always wait for the boys' choir at around 2:40. Pure bliss.

  • the little intermittent semi-forced smiles starting at ~2:27. I can't even....

  • Hollis Meraviglioso

  • As much as I love this song, they should've not, in any case, shortened it to 3:54.

It just doesn't sound right, I prefer the album version.

  • @GJOosterhof1 I agree mate but in fairness there wasn't a fuckin snowballs this song was gonna do any business in the charts no matter what way they edited it. Way too dark.

  • I won't be surprised if band like Radiohead and Coldplay was influenced by Spirit of Eden. Mark Hollis is truly an unsung hero in the music world.

  • Anyone else think this sounds a little bit like 'Within You Without You'?

  • im a 22 year old man and this is so beautiful it makes me wanna cry

  • Kind of ironic that EMI would post this on Youtube, when they sued the band back in the 80s for releasing this "unmarketable" album.

  • @aedrianum

I agree! And I love Radiohead. In a way, they are very much influenced by the sound of Talk Talk. El arte verdadero es intemporal.

  • @degree7 Not really. it cost money to make albums, if they can't sell the albums it's more of a risk than if they can't get youtube views.

  • @JBshotJL

Actually, I don't think they ever sued the band, they just went to court to end their contract with the label.

  • 3 people don't believe in anything.

That music is a touching pure beauty and invitation to musical Eden. "Spirit of Eden" was last Talk Talk album released by EMI. "Laughing Stock" and 1998 Hollis' solo album released Polydor from Universal Music.

  • Youtube ad's can go f*ck themselves, seriously.

  • Everyone here do yourself a favor and buy the DVD Talk Talk: Live in Montreaux. You're all guaranteed to be having nonstop goose bumps for an hour and a half...

  • Awesome ! my "play again" button is wear out...

  • How much overlap does VEVO seem to think there is between Talk Talk fans and LMFAO fans?

  • Mark Hollis is dead guess, battled for many years with a herion addiction hence the opening line in this song "ive seen herion for myself", amazing music amazing artist, like so many before him, too beautiful for this world......

  • Comment removed

  • @Knockrocker It's about his brother's h addiction.

  • this song is a cry from the heart.....i cry every time

  • I only wish Mark Hollis would read these comments and he would see what a hole he has left in many of our hearts.

He is such a fantastic musician, I wish I could meet him one day and tell how much an influence his lyrics were in my life............

  • in the whole of my life, there are just a handful of tracks that haunt me no matter how many times I hear them... this is #1 on my list. the definition of brilliant = I believe in you. thank you mark. this record helps me get through dark days.

  • Holy shit...this is DEEP!

  • Immense. A great band.

  • Sing us another one Mark! How can you purge your soul into a song and then walk away?

  • Volvé Mark Hollis (Come back Mark Hollis).

  • Brilliant... love you Mark.

  • "Look, I'd like a hit, right, as much as the next bloke. But what would really make me happy is for people to play my songs 20 years from now. I want my songs to become classics." Mark Hollis.

Well done, you did and no thanks to EMI...

  • What I love most about this song, and Spirit of Eden as a whole, is how unbelievably emotional it is. Mark seems to be on the verge of tears with every line, and the music itself seems to be almost "crying" along with him.

I'd agree that Laughing Stock is indeed better than Spirit, but the two of them are both phenomenal and worth listening for anyone who appreciates music. Mark's self-titled solo effort is also incredible.

  • great video but the shortened version of this song doesn't do it justice. needs to be presented in its full form. it's such an underrated album though "laughing stock" is really their best. people need to hear it more.

  • So beautiful........

  • Faultless but improvised and re-recorded classsic, peace be with you all!

  • Great, great, great, great song and it's a pleasure to discover that a video was made for it.

Album Spirit Of Eden one of my prefs.

    Thanks Talk Talk to existing.

  • mark Hollis saint patron...

  • Heaven can wait....

  • This song has saved me so many times, pure bliss! Amazing stuff that raises anyone to heaven.

  • Man, it is just unfair that we can´t listen to Talk Talk with new material but have to put up with all kind of crap, from lady caca to "reggaeton" (or however you spell it). At least we can listen to all the great material they did.

  • @TheSRalston im with u , brother ..

  • Radcliffe & Maconie playing this last week: "Talk Talk, a band that just did all they wanted to do and then stopped".

  • In the 80's these kind of bands made 'MUSIC'! Creativity was at it's highest , you could hear what you liked on the radio because ther e was a wide variety of music genres to satisfy everybody. Nowadays it's 'QUICK, MAKE A RECORD AND A VIDEO TO RECOUP THE MONEY INVESTED IN THIS PROJECT AND MAKE SOME PROFIT'!

Sadly it's more about the money and fame instead of the music. Music like this isn't made anymore so enjoy the flashbacks folks!

  • Amazing! Please come back!!!!!

  • when I hear this song I can cry and be happy at the same time.

this band has managed to make a real breakthrough. I love all the albums, and Talk Talk are one of the few groups that did all kinds of music so well. much better than boring depeche mode

  • xx

  • que gran grupo Talk Talk, me facina!!!

  • man, i love that he has a huge grin on his face nearing the end of the song.

  • @jessegrn Thats a good comment. Reflects the point that this song is positive, infact the whole album is. Soothing in despair and keeps you on a high in times of joy.

  • Will ALWAYS love Talk Talk! Their music is so unique and I will never tire of listening to it. Every song tells a story and I'm sure some of them were written for me! He he. :D xxx

  • My favourite band all time!

  • Well we all know now that it is probably the bankers posting this stuff. Trying to raise some revenue. EMI had similar issues with Kate Bush. Unfortunately creativity at its highest level does not equate to profit.

Give EMI credit for supporting and promoting creativity.

  • Some of the best treasures in life are hidden from us, as with this song.

What frustrates us is that more do not get the chance to hear the genius of what is the best crafted song of the last 30 years

  • Whether they (Mark Hollis & Talk Talk) or you like it or not, fans like me wants to see everything performed by their creators! This is rare footage, recorded in such a high quality that it still speaks for itself! Great stuff, thanks for posting this!

  • I myself also believe in artistic freedom. However, I don't think that we can completely disdain EMI, because they certainly were important to Talk Talk's career and financial successes. Let's think about it, without them, the band wouldn't have the financial freedom and name recognition to make Spirit of Eden and the more important, Laughing Stock.

  • "I bought prejudice for my health...""

    What does that mean??

  • This song is bad for my health. Everytime i hear it I get the chills and catch a cold.

Talk Talk made music that is exquisite and challenging and that hasn't changed and never will. We need more timeless beauty.

  • Such a Beautiful Song!!Just Plain amazing artists, and agree with a previous post about them being and underrated 80's group

  • If he got crap back in the mid eighties/early nineties from record execs he certainly wouldn't be interested in the X Factor obsessed style music business we have these days and unfortunately that very same business wouldn't give a flying F for artists like Mark Hollis/Talk Talk either.

We're not getting to hear much original music that stands the test of time these days, only stuff that ticks marketing focus group boxes....it's thoroughly depressing.

    Cheers Mark.

  • mark where the fuck are you, do us a favorite and come back

  • This songs still gives me goose bumps, an awesome voice with beautiful lyrics. Played this over and over all day long, its as good today as when it was first released !

  • @paveysue Sometimes I have to saturate myself with it!

  • From Talk Talk on The Party's Over right up until Runeii on Laughing Stock, everything Talk talk touches turns to gold. But for me, I Believe In You is a particularly shiny example of the immense beauty and joy that they are capable of. Forever one of greatest bands of all time. Mark, Paul and Lee, I give you my thanks. For the memories and, more importantly, the emotion.

  • re-discovering Talk Talk...Colour of Spring such a wonderful album, still sounds good, thanks

  • Fantastic music, i love all there stuff. Such A Shame, Living In Another World, etc..

  • Moody, hypnotic, spiritual, daring - Spirit of Eden is a classic and forgetten masterpiece of minimalism and the unconventional.

  • Heroin takes to the stage

  • @ifthisisaman You idiot, this song is about his brother's addiction and subsequent death from herion.

  • @dkhein his brother was dyslexic and died trying to inject a heron

  • great song...thank you very much from sicily!!!

  • what a voice!

  • he's too great and handsome

  • Comment removed

  • that's a disgrace. Like Zappa said to Steve Vai when he asked him for advice about being a professional musician, 'Get a good lawyer'. It's about money. That's all it is. Doesn't detract from this wonderfull song but makes you wonder how many genuinelly talented artists are filling shelves in Tesco or Wallmart. Like Scott Matthews. Dropped because he wasn't 'a priority'.

  • Ooh, I long for those who don't make music for money...

  • Mark = Genius

  • This is so similar to radio head....he was way ahead of his time his voice is so unique i love it.....some pple didnt know what real music was or is....this is great.

  • Damn this guys vocals coupled with the face expression rubs me the wrong way, I like the music tho, but cant watch the vids

  • One of my all time favourite Songs by Talk talk. They really went the distance following what they thought Music should be

  • it's pure art no product....fuck emi and all the other cunty thieving record fucktards..

  • i believe in Talk Talk. Come back we need you Mark

  • When my time is up to drift off with I Believe in You playing softly in the background. So many people wish that Mark would come back to those many of us who swoon when we hear is voice and songs. Maybe as has also been often said he had nothing else to prove and the creative control of record companies destroyed his will to share his magic. I hope wherever and whatever Mark Hollis and his loved ones are they are happy and fulfilled because they have given us all something so sublime .

  • . Mark Hollis is has been said by many other subscribers the closet thing to a musical genius that I could imagine. His song writing is always as perfect as a Stradivarius violin and he conjures sould moving music that has no equal. If I had one wish it would be to see Mark Hollis and Talk Talk pay live before I die and I would wish for nothing more from life. .

  • @dreamvault wow!

  • I have produced events for over 23 years and have over 45,000 CD albums programmed into my my master lap top. Without doubt the only song writer who moves me continually is Mark Hollis. The Colour of Spring is almost Operatic in its completeness as a piece of music and without doubt one of the best albums of all time. I Believe in You from Spirit of Eden is the song that most moves my Soul when I am happy, down, reflective or inspired.

  • Spirit Of Eden and Laughing Stock are master works of Talk Talk. After more than 20 years, they're still sounding in my MP3 player and my car stereo. And they will still be in 20 years more, no matter the player.

  • its great to see so many people still love this track, lyrically perfect imho. I never ever tire listening to this song. My only wish would be to see Hollis perform live. The man is a genius, I hope he looks at these comments and realize how much his music meant to people.

  • I thought the court case was about Talk talk releasing themselves from they`re contract with EMI...but thats what i`ve heard im not sure thats how it really was...i dont think any record company could sue any of they`re artists for making a non commercial album...sure, they could drop them...but i thought Talk talk wanted out of EMI anyway...they`re last album was on the polydor label along with Mark Hollis`s solo album...But i could be wrong...respect to everybody`s elses opinion

  • wonderful

  • There are no cuts, and the progressions are so slow, you barely even notice them. But somehow by the end of the video, you feel a tremendous uplift, as if a guiding hand had taken you out of the dark and into a bright light.

  • I think the best song and best unvoluntary clip ever

  • Lonely, drug abusive lyrics with a slight hint of hope.

  • Love, love, love this song...and have for many years.

  • Listening to the album as I type this. Easily in the top 10 albums of all time. A work of staggering beauty - Spirit Of Eden

  • Great vid

  • Talk Talk gave up commercialism for artistic freedom. This is what I call true artistry.

  • Easily one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. Start the day with it,everyday. And you will be a better person for it.

  • Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • music of today still is trying to catch up with the brillance of this band. glad i was born when i was to get in on the ground floor of this my all time favorite band. thank you talk talk for being the soundtrack of my life.

  • This song, this video, these posts, this album, that band, their work all so very very good.

  • fuck the music industry, art can never be made into a product

  • @t3hpez

Thats why i love youtube. you can discover the real artists now. Evenings after this webpage and getting to know so much other real beautiful music and then buying the cd because its timeless

  • At 1:20 I think my heart is going to explode.

  • @dovie2blue Me too!

  • Incredible song, incredible group, incredible song writer. My top group since 2nd album. Songs have often helped in troubled times and they have never seemed to age.

  • Just thought the classical composer Haydn, deserves a mention 4 inspiring this sublime music. Mark knows what I'm talking about! Those of u who've realised we're never going 2 hear from Mr Hollis again; could give a listen 2 Steven Wilson's (Porcupine Tree) other band No Man. They're not Talk Talk of course (there's only 1!) but they're good. Perhaps you could start with Returning Jesus." I'm probably preaching 2 the converted here but David Sylvian's "Secrets of the beehive is an amazing LP too

  • straight to the core of our spirit

  • Record labels have there own agenda with music. The artist has theirs...

  • why no comments

  • what does EMI stand for? Evil Men Insuits.

  • @christschool never knew this thanks for sharing... i guess EMI never knew what kind of talent they had with this band... Talk Talk is the greatest out of there roster

  • Wow! What an ahead of their time band. Amazing music and lyrics.

  • It's a funny thing,(relating to the majority of comments), This is the first video i'm not watching!! completely by accident!

  • EMI's management are a bunch of nasty buggers.

  • Possibly their most beautiful track ever. I never tire of hearing this. Why doesn't everybody love music like this. Just perfect.

  • @kingscoop I have it on the Best of TT CD and it's track 11. Yet I return to it over and over, his voice is so beautiful even if I can't understand the lyrics and the tune is simply haunting. I hear him crying out for the Holy Spirit to help him understand. The pain on his face in the video matches his voice...what reality.

  • @dovie2blue - can't argue with that. it's one of those songs that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. many songs have moved me in my life, this has to be one of the stand out tracks. If I had to mention others they would be 'Orpheus' by David Sylvian and 'Woman in Chains' by Tears for Fears. I'm off to play them right now. Take care, Tim

  • @kingscoop I do:))))

  • excelente! Esses caras saum d+

  • my heart my heart breaks everytime i hear the pain he felt for his beloved brother. May Gos ease his pain

  • No sabría cómo agradceros todas las horas de música en que os he disfrutado.

    Precioso.

Gracias por existir, sabeís que os quiero.

    M/

  • Such a beautiful song...just renders me to tears. Does anybody know if this is maybe about his brother?

  • @Annatizadell Yes it is.

  • Beautiful.

  • A great song from the best album no one's ever heard.

So weird to see it put to pictures though - I always picture a disembodied voice singing in a massive, barely candle-lit church where the music just floats around the room...

  • @krisko77 That's what Mark wanted you to do, lead with your own individual imagination from the music. EMI forced him to make this video which he didn't want to pollute your mind with. He wanted you to develop your own imagery to the music.

  • The singularly most relaxing and brooding song I've ever had the pleasure of letting breach my eardrums.

Let it wash over you. And has anyone had a more poignant and dexterous voice than that of Mark Hollis? Certainly not in collaboration with the instrumentation.

  • There are not many albums (yes, thats what we used to call them) in my vast collection that have stood the test of time. Spirit of Eden is on that short list. 20 years later and it still haunts me. Despite the dark, and brooding lyrics, the beautiful instrumentation urged me to include it on our wedding soundtrack...

  • @cybrarian86 I had the 3 previous albums and played them non stop along with a recording of a live concert off the tv, they were magnificent, awesome even. I was at the door of Virgin records the day Spirit of Eden was released. I rushed home and put it in the cd player and... cried. It was CRAP! I listened to it 10 more times to find if I was missing anything, but no. So I took it back and demanded a refund. Which the manager did,

But we all have different likes.

  • Terrific song this.Classic Talk Talk.

  • Here is something Talk Talk fans may not know. Mark Hollis did not want to do this video or any video featuring himself or the band as he thought music should paint a portrait or overlay a video of something complimentary. EMI forced him to do this video and shortly thereafter sued Mark for making what they deemed a non-commercial related album. Isn't it ironic that EMI posts this video when they clearly didn't like the album, so much so they sued Mark and the band. Shame on EMI!

  • @christschool Wow, that's some crazy underlying crap EMI pulled on Talk Talk, but that's the music business or entertainment as we know it. Unbelievable. Thanks for the info.

  • @christschool One of my all time favourite Songs by Talk talk. They really went the distance following what they thought Music should be

  • @christschool

Screw these corporate behemoths. We need to thwart these jack-booted, greed infested, no-faced borgs at every turn. I'm tired of these thugs sticking it to the average person every time they can. We need to quit buying from them and quit supporting them....they have no loyalty to us...so screw em'!

All they care about is the green. I say screw em'

Corporations just pick up and go where where the labor is cheap...they don't have to show loyalty to anything cept' money!

  • @christschool you are then us the talk talk fans should sued emi maybe that why they finished in 1991

  • @christschool absolutely! It is a disgrace and EMI can frankly go and f*** themselves. These short-term money makers didn't see what Talk Talk were/are...truly timeless!

  • @christschool I think this guy outsmarted and out-everythinged everybody. Fuck them. They can suck ass and he'll always soar miles above them. Fuck all the retail commercial crap. Music is ethereal. You can't wrap it in a box. He is magical and mystical and no one will ever make him betray himself.

  • @christschool I would imagine that although the company remains, that few of the people responsible for those decisions when Spirit of Eden was released still remain with the company today.

  • @christschool wow...how could they sue such a nice humble guy...bloody shame.....what year was this song made??

  • @456japan It was published in 1988. The Spirit of Eden album was perhaps the band's greatest collaboration, yet produced no hits. Most of the music was improvised in the studio and then edited back down digitally to create templates for songs. Hollis never toured this record because he said it would have been impossible. Before this album, the band was panned by music critics as flash in the pan New Wave artists. However, this album proved they were more than that & particularly Mark was.

  • Make a come back tour, albeit select venues please talk talk, 38 yrs old been listening to you since 18 !!

  • I've gone Talk Talk mad, my mate lent me a 80's Mix Cd heard "life's what you make it" discovered Gwen didnt write "Its my Life" and now im totally sold to Talk Talk. Mark your a genius, what a totally brilliant band you led!

Im buying all your albums. Simply fantastic. I do not know why you werent a bigger success in the UK. But your lovely music lives on.

    Fantastic! Talk Talk. RocketRonnie xx

  • @rocketronnie100 Gwen Stefani is a talentless hack compared with Mark Hollis. I cringe every time I hear her sing his beautiful song. Glad you found the REAL song and the REAL band.

  • One of the absolute greatest songs of all time. Possibly my favorite.

The album version is pure bliss. Spirit of Eden is a masterpiece!

  • I agree totally.

  • Was fortunate enough to see them perform live in edinburgh.

    Awesome.

Would pay a fortune to see them again.

  • @totshaz We can't go back in time and do it again, unfortunately. But thank God for YouTube!

  • Genius, where is he these days? anyone know?

  • the last minute of this song is sooooooooo nice

  • (Mark Hollis / Tim Friese-Greene) Hear it in my spirit I've seen heroin for myself On the street so young laying wasted Enough ain't it enough Crippled world I just can't bring myself to see it starting Tell me how I fear it I buy prejudice for my health Is it worth so much when you taste it Enough there ain't enough hidden hurt A time to sell yourself A time for passing Spirit How long
  • thank you talk talk

  • un sottovalutato grande gruppo degli anni 80...
