  • I recently got my first Carvin- a TL60, very happy! Also thinking about getting this

amp, are you happy with it?

(by the way, good video! I couldn't have done better!)

  • Sweeet!

    Thanks for settings/speaker info too...

  • @reggaemash No Problem. I figure I better be putting that info on here. Otherwise ya just get countless questions asking about it :)

  • Check out Tom Andersons website for their vintage voicing setup. It basically is a 250 k on the single coils and 500k on humbuckers and it switches between the 2 by itself mechanically!

  • Nice little demo! Have any comments on stainless steel frets vs conventional nickel-silver ones from personal experience? All kinds of people comment on it without personal 1st hand experience but I'd like to get your take on this. TIA! :)

  • I really like the SS frets. There is debate as to whether they make a difference tonally, but it's hard to make a comparison unless I had two identical guitars with different frets. Regardless, I love the feel of them. As far as bending goes, it almost feels like you're playing with the next lighter gauge of strings. They kinda just feel like butter. Almost a tad too slippery at first if you're used to regular nickel frets. After I got my first guitar with SS, I haven't got one without. :)

  • cool, yeah I've heard that "next gauge down" thing about SS frets from various people...so do you use 9's on it or 10's?

  • Sorta gone back and forth. Bought it with 9s, strung it up with 10s for the tone, went back to 9s for the feel. Since it is a 25.5" scale, there's a tad more tension than on some of my other guitars (25" and 24.75"). Thus, 10s make it a tad tough to play some things, but I like the sound I get from 10s more than the 9s. A pickup swap may be in order because I like the 9s, but I want a bit of a fatter tone from the neck pickup. I usually play around with the tone knob for this anyway.

  • Cool...might I suggest a DiMarzio Area '58 for the neck? I have no personal experience with them, but I'm a big fan of Lincoln Brewster and he uses one in the neck of his Strats...great tone too. :)

  • As someone else hinted at, if you haven't already, try using 250k pots, they help smooth out the highs a bit. :)

  • Wow. A bit of irony here. I was just checking out that Area '58 pickup (or the '61) for my neck position earlier today :) Here's my thought about the 250k vs 500k. I have a bridge humbucker. how much will the 250k darken the humbucker do you think? Not sure. Never tried it.

  • Honestly, I've never tried it, but there's tons of people on the Seymour Duncan forums that have experience with it that can confirm that it does make a significant difference.

  • Strats traditionally come with 250k pots, and Gibson guitars come with 500k to offset the brightness of Strats, and the darkness of Gibsons (alder/swamp ash vs mahogany.) All Carvins come with 500k pots, presumably to save money. The only way you know is if you switch them out. If you like it the way it is, then by all means, keep it.

  • @ct6mblack Try it out, and see. Pots are fairly cheap, and it's a pretty easy soldering job. Just solder every wire back the way it was on the old pot. If you don't like it, switch 'em back.

  • DAMN brother you can play. Great demo, awesome sound.

  • so how do you like the Bolt? Everything I read indicates it is just a good as a strat but I've never had the opportunity to play one.

  • Absolutely love it! A buddy of mine has an American Strat that I've played several times, and the only thing I have to complain about is the pickups on the Bolt. Everything else about the Bolt I like better than the Strat. I got mine with a tung oiled neck, stainless steel frets, and graphtech saddles. The issue I have with the pickups is that I feel that they aren't "fat" enough I guess. I feel like they should be a bit thicker sounding, but that might just be personal preference...

  • That might actually be the pot's fault. Is it 250k or 500k?

  • 500K

  • I like it!

  • How was it before hellatone speaker? What was the model of your old speaker? carvin, celestion?? I found used v16 with celestion vintage 30. Should I buy it?

  • Very trebly. This speaker helped round off the highs a bit. It has a much fuller bottom end than it did before as well. I had the stock Carvin Vintage series speaker in there. The Vintage 30 is a great match for this amp as well (or so I have heard) The Hellatone was cheaper and still celestion quality (since it's just a broken-in and relabelled celestion G12H30) I'd go for it on ebay! Look at it this way, if it's less than about $575 (amp new + Vin 30), it's a pretty good deal.

  • The V16 is awesome!

  • Gotta love the Vintage 16!
