When he stepped in the milk, it didn't make a puddle on the floor, and when she adjusted her mirror, it showed that he wasn't running after her - because it was his ghost. She wasn't trying to kill herself, she was trying to get out of that house, and he was trying to stop her and say he was there but she couldn't see him. But then she died too, and they were finally together.
