  • 2 years late but ... anyway, plant a Trident seedling in good soil (outdoors) and you can get a 3-5" trunk in as many years !

Hard prune to get the taper, and root prune every 2 years.

That's how the commercial producers do it in China and Japan, and anyone with a spare piece of ground can do the same.

I doubt if the tree is more than 15 years old.

Most Bonsai can be 'aged' this way, and it's why it's best to ignore any claim that a tree is 'X' years old - It's what it looks like that matters.

  • how long it took to grow that kind of tree?

can you grow them inside during winter?

    they are wonderfull

  • @jimprice09 this tree was probably considerably old when collected and trained for many years as bonsai to bring it to its current form, no you can't grow them inside during the winter, like all temperate trees they require a period of dormancy otherwise they would become stressed and die after a couple of years and yes they are wonderful

  • that is 1 impressive bonsai :)

  • how do you get the trunks so big ???

  • q: can a japanese maple cultivated for a bonsai live in doors thru winter and summer or does it need to exposed to the seasons?

  • No. It needs to remain outside.

  • Nice work. Was this an aerial layering?
