Boy DO I have spongy buds. all of them. My hair is extremely soft and troublesome on the back lower locs. I refuse to put wax on my hair, catches ALL the junk from clothing and air. UUUGGGHHH. but It's coming alon. trying to patiently wait for them to reach my shoulders. woohoo on my way.... Nice to see you again. :-)
ur hair was the bomb...I remember watching this video and wishing my hair was like that. I hadn't even started my hair yet I was about 5 months behind u. That was a good size and look on u. I'm glad ur going back to traditional locks and can't wait to see ur journey :)
it looks good what i use on myself as well as my clients is is ecko style gel mixed with oraganic root stimulater twist gel its a dread butter and it works really good
Your hair looks really pretty now! So do you agree that clean hair locs faster than dirty hair? I was told not to wash my hair until it locs. Now that I have your blog addr. I guess it will probably be best to reach you there? Let me know...
My locs were the same way, only worse. I wore an afro for 2 years, locs for 10 months, and I just cut them off 5 days ago. Back to the fro!!! how can I find you on facebook?
LOL.. you are not alone!!! Matter fact i just finished shaping them. I use Organics lock and twist gel and the duck billed clips to hold. To tame the frizzies and spongy areas on my locs - i palm roll and shape them with some knotty boy dread wax; use just enough to lightly coat your fingertips and shape them by twisting and flattening out your loc then palm rolling those spongy areas to a more unified shape.
Your locs look great and i salute u if you started these yourself!!! I'm no expert l but in the early stages of my locs having used all those products u used to make your pomade especially the shea butter u may find u have build up in the long run when locs start to mature. My hair is quite soft but i just use EVOO with water, re-twist then go under dryer and it holds for me. As you're active you could try latching and using a light natural oil that will rinse out as a moisturiser or to twist.
With locs you want to avoid solid shea butter, only because it has to be melted to apply. So just think - if you have to melt something to apply it to your locs, then what do you think it will do once it solidifies? Exactly! It will become solid IN your locs which you DO NOT want. My best advice would be to stick to products that's original consistency is soft, like a gel.
And as far as sweating goes, I'd say INTERLOCK! They stay put and NO twisting needed. Just palmroll and you'll be fine :)
I started my locks around the same time you did are you goin through the frizzy stage.. an if i retwist my hair every 2wks will that determine if my locks be thick or thin?
its gonna take like 6-8 months to lock. the spongy locks its because the way u locked. I tried 3 diffrent methods to lock first was the way u have it, the sec was tiny braids, the third and final was two strand twist. all are effective but the most convient is the last two. good luck!!!
Your locs are coming along beautifully. Spongy buds are just part of the locing process. You wont have to cut them or anything they'll condense and become firmer w/ time.
ur locs r looking good. yup, i had spongy ones and they go away in time (it'll take time). keep making ur own mix to loc. for one u saving money and you know whats in ur mix. i make my own mix, not for hold. i dont care much about that. i just care about moisture. but aloe gel holds pretty good . it may last tthrough one or two work outs. i heard lock & twist works good. (never used it myself, i dont like spending money) sorry if comment is to long.
i had mines for 6 years nw and yea at first they will be like that till they start to lock up takes a cuple months..i use to use beeswax and stuff dey make for dreads but nw i just use straight up gel..the brown kind.i knw gel isnt good for your hair but i luv hw it holds and its been do n me just fine so yea just keep do n wt ur do n and eventually they will lock everybody hair is diff so it mite tk u longer...i miss my short hair tho...but i luv the long lol
I am currently on my second set of locs and what I can say is that you might want to restart your since they aren't fully loced yet and have someone do more symmetrical parts, and this would make styling easier as the years go by. Other than that I think they look great!!!
Your "spongy" buds will pass. That's where your hair is meshing inside your loc. Once your locs start to mature, it will thin out. Most people experience that. Trust and believe, I had the same questions you had. I saw your page on FOTKI...I'm on FOTKI, too. Hope this info helps.
Yes...Amy buds are spongy. As your locs mature they will condense and get firm and thick. It all comes in time. Before you know it you'll be there! Girl go on and join the Tweet nation! We're all over there! Good luck with your concoction. I can't advise you there. KEEP IT LOC'D!
I just did it lol Didn't know what I was doing or how it would come out. I just really don't like when my hair is in my face. Guess I need to get used to it
My daughter had spongy buds too! I felt like taking them out but I didn't and they went away around month 6 I think. You can look at her older videos and you will be able to see them. You locks look great and this is only a stage and it'll be over soon.
Yeah, it's definitely goes away. Oh and build up try water based products like aloe vera or a water based alcohol-free gel and a natural oil of some type. I feel like the shea butter is great for loose natural hair but for locks it is hard to wash out. I use an alcohol free gel and nyle oil to retwist my locks and I have never had a problem with build up, not even once.
no one can avoid buildup inside locs. no one. but to avoid UNNECESSARY buildup, you really should not use products like beeswax, butters, grease, and even coconut oil. these products not only are solid in their natural form, which means they'll coat your locs, but they attract even MORE lint and dust onto/into your locs, which will be impossible to wash out, no matter how strong the shampoo. a MILD, CLEAR shampoo and a natural liquid oil like jojoba are probably the best things to use on locs.
Your hair is looking good. The spongy look will go away soon. It just takes sometime. You can latch hook with out starting over but I wouldn't suggest it because latching is not good. THINS the locs over time. Carol's Daughter has loc butter that's natural and it nice. I LIKE IT and for the budget it last a while I know the budget honey I know the budget. LOL I am deciding if I am going to start locing again I like my curly hair....Newho I will text you this week with some otha suggestions. :)
Yeah I remember seeing her loc butter b4 I stated loc'n I'll have to look at it again. I think I might stick with my homemade concoction.....seems to be working so far.
the spongyness is right on course. your locs should ultimately be the size of the parts at the root so they thicken up w/ your shedded hair. they get fatter before they get slimmer.
ur concoction was cool, but I would add more aloe vera gel or water to dilute it a lil more cuz when it dries, it might cause buildup. i dunno for sure, but it's just a thought
I have some spongy ones too. I am almost five months in and what irritates me is these long strands with a ball hanging off them. I feel like pulling them off because it's getting out of hand.
girl i am from georgia and i can't stand the critters either. usually they run me in the house. you will find that OFF! does not work so save your money.
Your hair look nice...I have had my locs for about 5yrs now and they are now in the middle of my back. I'm actually thinking about cutting them...anyway...it took my hair two years to loc...be patient!!! Spongy locs are just signs of your hair taking form...be patient!!! Did I say "BE PATIENT!!! You look beautiful!
your locks are looking really good. I am right along with you.. 3 months in!!! I still dont see any buds but plan to wash this wednesday and hope that I start noticing them. I only did 1 wash so far after 2 months and noticed that my locks are holding better. The person who started mine told me not to wash AT ALL until they lock. Glad I didn't listen to her. Do you retwist your whole lock or just the roots? Let me know. And good luck on your journey. They are looking good!!!
Spongy locs means that your locs are maturing. As your hair gains length you can eventually cut that sponginess off but you'll probably get so use to it that you won't even notice it anymore.
LMAO@ the temper tantrum. That was cute. If you're worried about your roots unraveling when you sweat, you might want to look into latching them. That way, you won't have to worry about them until the new growth sets in.
ABSOLUTELY NOT! I wouldn't dare suggest or consider it if you had to start over. You can find plenty of tutorials on how to do it on your own on youtube.
I just threw away some loc treatment samples, but I thought of u! "Mayn, I don't use this, Amy prob. could...ah well". I'm a packrat as it is, the stuff had to go. Thx for the vid
hey Amy, your locs are looking really good. Its fine to make your own stuff, actually its probably better. If you find you need more hold, mix in a little honey to your mix. Not too much, it shouldn't be sticky (and you don't want bees flying around your head, lol) but enough to give it some hold. People also sometimes add it to their conditioners because honey is a humectant. Anyways, looking good. spongy buds are common, and another sign your hair is locking up!
I've never been interested to do blog tv. I figure i would have to be on there 24/7. And i'm not trying to do that! LOL :) You getting more hang time, AMY!
Just started watching you on Blogger. I have one too. I"m the House of Mouse. Do not be overwhelmed by all you see there. LOL! I'm a blogging fool and love to tinker and add stuff to it and well I write about crazy stuff. But feel free to pop in and take a peek. Oh yeah following you on Twitter too. Mouse1996 there. I knew it was only a matter of time for you. ;-)
ur locs look nice 2 me...but do u twists all the way down or just the new growth?? i kno if i dnt twist all the way down on my bros locs it can tend to look spongy @ times
My locs get "spongy" as well. I think it's from twisting the roots, which makes the top tighter, and the rest of the hair (bottom) just get loose (pockets).
what did you use in your hair before your new concoction? have you tried the organic root stimulator lock and twist gel? everyone seems to say it works really really well for locks and twist. here are the ingredients doesnt seem too too bad; Water Aqua , Coconut Milk Cocos Nucifera Extract , Soybean Oil Glycine Soja , PVP , Polyquaternium 37 , Propyl Paraben , Methyl Paraben , DMDM Hydantoin , Propylene Glycol , Fragrance Parfum , Sucrose
I really like the Organic Root Stimulator Lock an Twist gel. I just don't like using it by itself b/c it makes my hair feels a lil crunchy. Maybe I can add some to my new mixture and see how it works.
Your hair looks really good. The buds will compact & become less spongy in time. I have some locs that still feel spongy but for the most part they are firm. Keep up the great work!
no beeswax. its causes buildup. no petroleum either. same deal. i've had my locs for 5 years now, but i dont do my own hair. i'm one of those sad black girls who never learned how to do my own hair. but i know beeswax is a no-no. my advice, just don't overtwist, dont put too much product in your hair. drink your water and enjoy the journey. your hair looks great so far. i love your "spongy" locs. keep up the good work. oh, i am in the midst of my weight lost journey again. watch some of ur vids.
Yep. I have them and I really hate them! Only because they look unkept. lol They say its just part of the process...Your hair is growing so nicely so keep it up!

My locs get "spongy" as well. I think it's from twisting the roots, which makes the top tighter, and the rest of the hair (bottom) just get loose (pockets).

Yea thrie gonna be spongy at first, and once the loc starts to compact the sponginess(if dats a word lol) will be gone.

what did you use in your hair before your new concoction? have you tried the organic root stimulator lock and twist gel? everyone seems to say it works really really well for locks and twist. here are the ingredients doesnt seem too too bad; Water Aqua , Coconut Milk Cocos Nucifera Extract , Soybean Oil Glycine Soja , PVP , Polyquaternium 37 , Propyl Paraben , Methyl Paraben , DMDM Hydantoin , Propylene Glycol , Fragrance Parfum , Sucrose
