That this woman could keep up with the incredible Al Norman in a rubber-legged dance number is a true testament that Nancy Carroll really had it all... Simply stunning.
...and then the 'athletes' started to dance. I sure do like these fun to watch numbers from the earlier days of cinema so much more than the ones with Gene Kelly running all over the place. He's like a guitar solo that goes on so long you forgot what the song was about.
there was no black dancers allowed in that time and NOW there is black man in white house not as slave but as America leader..see how time changed Finally Martin Luther king's dream come true
Have to disagree, Bill Robinson had a lengthy dance sequence in Dixiana the same year (in color none the less) and many black dancers were featured in Warner Brothers "Show of Shows" in 1929 (during the dance finale).
Also Ethel Waters performed two songs in "On With The Show", another Warner Brothers film from 1929.
There were numerous "short" films made at the same time which featured Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, The Cotton Club dancers etc..... Some of these were strictly for black consumption, while others were made for Paramount and Warner Brothers-Vitaphone.
And don't forget, a few years later, the Nicholas Brothers were featured in "Kid Millions" (Goldwyn 1934) and "The Big Broadcast" (Paramount 1935).
I like this clip because it features one of the great hot jazz bands of the 1920's, Abe Lyman, and his band. It is great to see Abe Lyman throwing the drumsticks up in the air and catching them while he playing. I had read he was a "show drummer" and now I could actually see what that meant. Also some nice hot trumpet work near the end of the dance number.
is Eleanor Powell really in the chorus? Cause I have looked at each dancer carefully...and I really don't think that she is there. I want her to be, but I just can't find her. haha :D
I like this clip. It is the leaving proof of who was Nancy Carroll. I remember when I saw Paramount on Parade at the Filmoteque and this was the star along with Clara Bow that left you such impression that you say woow, what a talent and personality, and remember this was not exactly their medium because they came from silent movies!
This is a really cute dance and one of the dances I have never heard of. How wonderful is youtube and the great posters who bring this kinda jazzy stuff to us?
Nancy Carroll - in 1930 the number 1 star at the box office, some of her films she was the star, others she was only in a few scenes - Nancy left in 35 to return to the "Theatre" on her return to Hollywood in 38 her billing had dropped from Name over the title to 5th or 6th billed, after 2 films like that She left again and did theatre and television for the rest of her life, as a STAR Nancy was tagged "THE BITCH OF THE LOT"...
Her voice seems to live in a key a little lower than this is written in, but she has such great stage presence! as far as Rubberlegs goes A guy who knows told me its all in the hips.
It's ashamed that the half restored paramount on parade has not been put on d.v.d yet

it's cool that Nancy is wearing pants in 1930 I would like to see more of her films but I still think Clara Bow is cooler.

That's Al Norman (King of Jazz, Happy Feet) dancing with Nancy. Eleanor Powell is in the Chorus Line as well.

She seems to sing in a key I'm not familiar with, but she exudes a true sweetness. Sorry to hear she wasn't easy to work with.
