I saw another video where someone had turned off Themes on the home screen. He was then able to flip instantly from screen to screen. Personally I like the slower transitions because the software first assumes I am utilizing a widget or icon on that screen. Another thing, you don't really need to swipe a long distance. The faster you can get your finger off the screen, the faster it will flip the screen.
The software was engineered this way because there are widgets you can use that same gesture in (contacts) thus the homescreen transition is delayed as it passes through the code if it is widget scroll or homescreen scroll. This doesn't take away from functionality, but it could be annoying if you are so anal about your UI looking perfect.
@nraudigy Based on this I would not agree on that it is slow. The transition is fast once it starts. The problem is that this gesture does not follow the finger which makes it feel clunky.
@digitulpunk That could indeed be one explanation. However, from implementation PoV widget scrolling could have been detected be seeing if the swipe gesture started from inside the widget or not. And accidental homescreen changes can be of course prevented by having a threshold value for the gesture (just as on the N900 and iPhone) but still have the animation following the finger when you move the screen.
There is so much complaining about this and I don't understand why. For those who prefer candy and animated screen transitions and animated what-ever-transitions to please their eye-candy need, sure pick the android or iOS phones that waste their battery life on those unnecessary animations.
@REICHSKE Yes, I noticed the button. I find that even more uglier :) Since if the swipe would work elegantly and perfectly, there is no need to invent a second way to do the same thing. But of course, there are just my opinions and I compare this phone to the N900.
@Kypeli I have the N900 as well, and I would have liked the option to cycle through my home screen without swiping. I tested this out, and while swiping, the icons on the homescreens are useless anyway :)
This is a feature. Symbian is fully capable of rapid screen movement as shown by the amazing cover flow in the media player. I personally do not want to flip through home screens that fast. Furthermore, tapping the screen button at the bottom gives the immediate response of any other button.
@2jomok2 I am sure it is a decision by Nokia / Symbian to have the home screen work like that. I agree that it is not a bug so it must be a feature ;)
The question is, why did they decide to do it like that. There might be many reasons; time, money, performance.. or even some UX person saying that this is the correct way to do it. But I am coming from the Nokia N900 so I compare the N8 to it. I feel this solution is clunky and not elegant compared to how the home screen swipe is done in N900
@Kypeli Symbian being Symbian, I'm sure the CORRECT way of cycling through the screen is hitting the button at the bottom. In one handed usage, it works out better than swiping on the screen no matter what the platform is. It doesn't stress out the thumb and is quicker than a gesture. I think the swiping was put in there to please eye candy and gesture users.
But that IS the current implementation - you can do both. As for the swipe, Nokia have said that, as some widgets are scrollable, they only switch home screens when the gesture is finished so you don't switch when you're trying to scroll sideways on a widget.
@beefiron Actually, I've seen a video where the N8 home screen has been improved so that when swiping, the home screen will follow your finger. This is in the next software update.
So I don't buy that excuse :) Although, Nokia has a lot of them.
I can use 10~15 apps at same time without lag. N8 rocks.

Actually I didn't say anything about the N8 if read the description. But you are free to draw your own conclusions.

@Kypeli It is done so because some widgets allow scrolling in them. Also to prevent from accidental scrolling.

I like the smooth N900 scrolling more

this looks horrible compared to my N900.
i don't think there is a replacement device for my N900 still, even though the camera is amazing on the N8...

Use the toggle button if you do not like it. Its to facilitate horizontal scrolling widgets.
