I am British and my spoken accent is more or less basic standard Received Pronunciation with a bias to Southern English - what some of us would call a Home Counties accent which would make it a bit difficult for people to pin me down to any particular part of Southern England. No American has commented on my accent directly but am told that if I was in the USA I would soon get tired of being told how "cute" my accent is. It's NOT cute - it's just a basic Southern England English accent!
People are the same wherever you go and everyone should be proud of who they are and where they come from. @123MATTYH It might not matter to you, and it doesn't really to me either, but it does matter to some people and they deserve the respect of being correctly identified. It's just about respect really, you wouldn't call an Austrian person German, yet they are a Germanic people. You wouldn't call a Welshman English because he isn't, but he is British so people should call him that instead of English. It's better to make the effort to avoid offending someone. But i agree it isn't that big a deal.
