I love these series, but you should have picked out the first magazine fed bolt actino rifle, and at the same time the first self cocking rifle - intrestingly its not Krag, Mauser, Enfield or Lebel. Nope its Swiss - the Vetterli rifle invented in 1869 - nearly 20 years before the big european empires had their first magazine fed bolt actions. It was by far the best weapon on the planet until the first semi automatic rifles came up - Mondragon and mannlicher 1885
Enfield was the AK of its time, the Springfield was the M16.
US rifles since 1740s lean towards accuracy. From the Kentucky to the Springfield rifled muskets, Sharps rifles, Krags, 1903s, M1s and M14s.....everyone of our service rifles was of match grade quality. Furthermore the ammo provided was also up to match standards. The 1906 and 173gr M1 ball allowed Marines to shoot out to 1,000yds for annual rifle qual in a time when European grunts only shoot out to 300m....
"the springfield is not the finest bolt acion gun.
You are kind of sorta retarded. The 1903 Springfield is a target rifle, the only line of rifles of its day to have a semi free floated barrel, match trigger and match sights. On top of that a mag cut off and fully adjustable rear sights (neither of the enfields, mausers or mosins had the latter...ever)
Marines have trained with the 1903 out to 600 and 800yds in 1908-1920....shot Germans at the same distances at Bellau wood
@USMarineRifleman0311 well thank you for the info. im always happy to learn more on wepons and im not saying that the springfeield is crappy. only that it had some rivals for the lack of a bether word.
@USMarineRifleman0311 the Lee Enfield mark 4 chambered in .308win made for the Americans by the Australian armoury under British patent was designed solely for the American Snipers so the Lee Enfield Mark 4 .308 beats the Springfield
.308 Winchester is a 1952 era cartridge....The first service rifle we had to apply it was the M14. M1917 Enfield in 30-06 was the only rifle we ever used that was remotely of British design. It was superior because of American innovations to the design, but was still plagued by non micro meter rear sight adjustments common to US service rifles.
There is absolutely no proof of british infantrymen shooting service rifles past 300m in training, from 1914 to 2011
@USMarineRifleman0311 hate to tell you mate but the Americans used Lee enfields my dad owns A Mark 4 chambered in.308 with U.S. Army stamped on the side of the receiver the bolt and receiver have matching numbers and it has been used in WW2 im going to guess your a Yank and your going to retaliate badly towards me because you refuse to believe that the English actually made a better sniper rifle and then they made an even better one the AWP that replaced the Lee and America bought them too
A Mark 4 in 308? Do you have a time machine or something?
The squad level sniper rifle in the 1950s when that caliber was invented by WRA Co, was the M1 garand with a side mounted scope. The service sniper rifle was still the M1903 with a 8x Unertl scope...All 30-06 rifles. 308 was never a sniper caliber until the M40A1.
@USMarineRifleman0311 YES There is a Lee Enfield Model 4 Mark 4 that was a sniper rifle Chambered in the .308 Winchester i have to pieces of proof
1. My Father owns one
2. The Lee enfield Service book A very Rare book to own has all Markings and indentions that where marked on the Lee's the Rifle is Real and it was used by the Americans in Germany in WW2
and the M40 is a 66 rifle the Model/Mark 4 Lee was a 42 rifle therefore the British had built Americas first .308 sniper rifle
The only Enfield ever used by Americans was the M1917 in 30-06 caliber. 308 isnt 30-06 dumbfuck.
NO WW2 RIFLE WAS EVER CHAMBERED IN 308 - A 1950s ERA CALIBER
308 Win was only recently recognized for 1,000yd accuracy. From 1906 to 2006, the caliber trusted beyond 800yds was 30-06.
If I asked you what bullet weight, velocity, bullet drop and deflection of the round you used, you wouldnt be able to provide it. Google sniper central "303 British use for sniping"
Could someone please spell out the names of the first rifle shown here as well as of the Swedish one mentioned? They are a bit difficult to understand in the video.
@InfantryChans91 It's obvious that nationalism affected your choice of the Enfield as a Springfield alternative, therefore why isn't it acceptable for Garry James to have a patriotism enhanced enjoyment for the 1903? Because it isn't nationalism for YOUR country, it must be wrong?
That being said, both are great rifles that took our countries through rough times. Have you ever even held a Springfield?
@ImWatchinTheTube You do make a good point however I have indeed fired both a Springfield and an SMLE on a private range and I still prefere the Lee Enfield.
I found the Springfield a much more straight forward rifle but the Lee Enfield was a lot smoother on the action and I got a much better grouping. However you are right both are indeed great rifles and iconic to both nations
@ImWatchinTheTube Tell you what I would love to fire, the Martini Henry. Unfortunatly firearms laws and the fact you need to visit a specialist to get the ammunition means it's somewhat of a challenge.
Bring your Enfield to a 600yd or a 1,000yd competition at Camp Perry.
The M1s and M1903s will smoke you by a long shot. Rate of fire is one thing, but the enfield only has v notch sights, which are useless for target work or shots beyond 300yds in the field. Hence why the British rifle qual course of fire never ranged beyond 300m. .....HENCE why the 1903 qualification actually went out to 600 and 800yds in 1905-1920
@USMarineRifleman0311 The Lee Enfield fired by a WW2 American sniper or a WW2 British marksman could hit a target up to 1000m away and i have fired a WW2 Mark 4 Enfield chambered in .308 against a M1903 both with iron sights and i could hit 10 rounds within a 5cm diameter circle ~800m at faster and more accurately with the Lee then my competitor could.
sigh...please never argue that 308 is ballistically superior to 30-06.
The only superior Enfield that was used by the Americans was the 1917. Which had the longest sight radius of any peep sighted WW1 rifles...a rifle still sold by the US CMP. Caliber = 30-06.
5cm at 800m? you are truly full of shit. The world record for a 7.62 firearm is 2 inches at 600yds and that was with a bench rested hi power scoped rifle.
@USMarineRifleman0311 you are bloody joking the .308 is along with the .302 and .303 rounds are some of the best accuracy rounds in the world we can hit cans with them at up to 1km i can do the same with a .223 rifle i must be really good then cos i can use a .308 very accurately at long ranges as well as a .223 and when we did the shots it was lieing down with bipod's so we where supported and we can only just see the circle at that range we then used scopes and the lee still won
@blueeyesseto "we can hit cans with them at up to 1km "
What the fuck are you smoking? The M113 175gr SMK 2600fps round is only capable of 1 MOA at 1,000yds which is 10 fucking inches. I can clearly tell you arent as knowledgeable about ballistics as an American would be, we dont claim such bullshit. Your own inability to shoot the 1903 is your problem not a fact that the rifle is inferior. The rifle is equipped with superior sight of the entire era (till the 1903A3), as well as ballistics
@USMarineRifleman0311 Also please note we did guess most of the shots at 800m and of my 10 i hit twice and the other 8 missed of the Springfield 1 hit 9 missed you can say they were luck shots but please know he has since sold his Springfield and bought a Lee

The only reason AEF had to settle for the Lee Enfield was because they were short on 1917s and 1903s.
Enfield, a rifle designed partly by an American, had an avg muzzle velocity of 2400fps with a 150gr bullet.
The slowest a 308 Win 175gr flies at is 2500-2600.
30-06 propells the same SMK 175gr FMJBT at 2700fps
30-06 M2 ball 150gr had an avg velocity of 2850fps.
30-06 light magnum with the same proj. can reach 3150fps.
1903 = superior ballistics all the way

the springfield is not the finest bolt acion gun.
the mosin nangant was the most popular rifle in the red army during ww2 and beat the semi auto SVD.
the mauser 98/98k is the rifle that the springfeild copied of.
the lee enfield was light weight and easy to use and had a large magazine and fired more rapedly than the mauser.
the springfield is good but not the best.

There is no bolt action rifle that beats the Sprinfield in its class for accuracy or ballistics.
The Mauser 98 was a hunting rifle
The Enfield was a battle rifle
and the 1903 Springfield was a target rifle.
The mosin nagant was and is a wooden stick with a barrel on top.

your own incompetence with the 1903 Springfield and lack of knowledge in peep sights is your problem.
You were outshot by Dad Farr, a senior citizen who could hit 70 consecutive bullseyes at the 1,000yd line with the 03's peep sights.
No Enfield or European rifle for that matter ever matched that feat. With irons or scoped.
For that same matter, we beat the last of the good European marksman at Creedmoor in 1875. We've been 1st place since.
