I wish I could perfect a way to make my whistle i have at home sound right on air and I wish I could make a way to mount one on my truck and sound correctlly my whistle in my trainroom would sound Awsome on there a CB&Q 5 chime and a GN 5 chime but I would buy a repleca not mount the origional one
@shininghappyperson7 I Definatlly Agree with you I was just up in Clifton Forge Va enjoying that one they have there to blow they have two a freight whistle and a passenger whistle
HANDS DOWN..This whistle test is a HUGE Success...In my opinion this is one of the BEST whistles in the nation. And the cool thing is when 113 is up and running..
The VOICE of the Iron Horse is going to be UNCAGED!!!!
For you guys who say it is close to a PRR 3 chime you are right...But it is different...They play one slightly different note....
PRR 3 chime notes : F#4 , A#4, and C#5
And
This whistle: F#4, A4, and C#5
CNJ whistle (This Whistle) has two chambers that are a bit longer and the third one is same as the PRR 3 chime. This whistle is a bit more crisp and real sounding...PRR Whistle can be raspy...
So as I'm listening to vintage PRR audio, I'm noticing that the whistles on the engines sounded the notes E-G-B, so where did you find that F#4, A#4, and C#5 were the notes?
Excellent whistle. Don't know any PRR whistles with a F# major chord. Don't know where you got that. This whistle is a whole tone above a K4. Same minor triad which is why it sounds similar to some. Great video!
@kenrinc On this whistle, I hear F#, A, C#1, which you're right, is the same minor triad as PRR whistles. As far as an F# major chord,...in the videos of PRR 1361 at York, PA, her whistle sounds the notes F#, Bb, C#1 which is a major chord. I've also definitely heard some vintage PRR audio with those same notes, and even GTW 6325 at Trainfest 2004 wore a PRR 3-chime with the exact same major chord structure. I'm partial to the minor triad myself....so beautiful.
Agreed. But without a doubt they were switching whistles. You won't fine too many whistles the same on 1361 just listen to them. The main one was always a minor chord based on the same notes as this whistle but depending on the video you watch you'll hear a major chord based on Eb major (G Bb Eb) Obviously swapping whistles. The original K4 whistles were E minor triads, doesn't mean the all had them. Some had banshees!
@kenrinc Ya, on her shakedown run she wore a typical 3 chime minor chord whistle that sounded so beautiful...then they switched to the more high-pitched major chord whistle that just didn't sound nearly as nice. I noticed that when they pulled the chord slightly you'd hear F, G#, C1 but when they pulled it more, it'd jump to the (G, Bb, Eb) major chord....how's it jump from minor to major like that?
I will admit Dave and I definitely put more emphasis into blowing for some of the crossings. There were at least two individuals taking video/audio for this whistle, we wanted to give them a show.
In fact, I chuckled at Daves Cass-like performance after this crossing. I dont think any of our whistle blows were as creative as the one in this video clip.
i have to agree with MandavoshkaMajafaja, that the engineer's whistle skills are infact very effective. they show true craftsmenship. in the way the engineer pulls the cord.
Yeah, pretty much - Cass is the only railroad that really quills the whistles anymore. Very good video! Thanks to the engineer for the nice quilling too!
@JoMiFu cool video I wish I could get my two whistles on steam engines I would love to hear them blow one is off the NP and the other CB&Q both 5 chime they sit on the shelf by my DM&IR headlight for now

According to "Eastern Steam Pictorial" at least the CNJ Heavy Pacifics used 3-note long bell (steamboat-type) whistles.

That's a nice whistle, but I thought the CNJ used a deep, steamboat style whistle, kind of like a Hancock 3-chime.
