No disrespect, but anyone who thinks Mayer sounds original hasn't listened to enough blues to understand/hear the influences. Great player, singer, and songwriter, though.IMO, the big difference between now and the "Good old days" is that people would hear music and then dig deeper. Modern listeners tend to hear something, dig it, and stop there. This could be a downside of the internet making so much information readily available or us just becoming more passionate about image than content.
How can his exposing more people to the blues be bad?
He's a great player but not original in any sense of the word.
My best guess: huge fans of his playing haven't heard Blyther Smith, T-Bone Walker, Freddy King, Albert King, Hubert Sumlin, Ike Turner, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Rush, ect... play so they think he invented the wheel.
Still, if he leads more people to an appreciation or deeper understanding of the blues it's a great thing. All the hating on his commercial success is silly.
@jakeizlove Look man, or woman, I swear I'm this guys biggest fan (I know everyone says that; but I know I'm up there.) Point is this guy is my favorite artist by miles and just about every name you listed I have heard of and listen to.. commonly. The thing I don't think you understand is that John Mayer, kind of like how SRV was 20-25 years ago, is like an ambassador of the blues. SRV made it possible for everyday people to understand blues and delve deeper into the names you listed..
@jakeizlove John Mayer is that modern ambassador. A lot of people couldn't just up and listen to Albert or Freddy King or especially guys like T-Bone or Hubert and understand. It takes guys like Stevie and now John Mayer to reprocess the blues into a more modern and understandable thing. He's kinda holding the door open to the VIP room where all the greats hang. Long story short, you may not like his pop tunes (which musically rival jazz tunes and arrangements) but you have to understand (now..
@surfer1211 Most people will never walk into the VIP room. I really do feel Mayer is a good player, just horribly overrated. It's great he's exposing people to blues but there's nothing new there. I really don't believe the SRV comparison is legit enough for serious discussion.
I definitely don't get why so many people trash him. There are tons of more relevant artists who pretty much died broke due to lacking the ability to commercialize their music and their ethnicity. Oh, and I'm a dude.
@jakeizlove I can see why you would think he's overrated and I respect that completely, especially since you do think that he is a good player. A LOT of people on YT bash him as Overrated yet have no reason for saying it other than jealousy or just dislike because of his "Hollywood," life (which is a bullcrap reason.) You on the other hand give an educated opinion. Like I said, he is my favorite artist by miles; I've listened to a lot of players and I just gravitate to his style above all others
@jakeizlove everyone has their opinion and that happens to be mine. I'm sure yours is much different and I'm cool with that. Most others though would want to burn me at the stake for loving such a "SRV bitter or Hopeless Hendrix wannabe. When in fact JM has chops and can hold his own, much better than a lot of players. He's up there with the top of this generations Guitar Players. He will be a referenced legend when this generation passes; but I do understand that you feel he's overrated. Lastly
@jakeizlove what artists are you talking about that had more relevancy yet died broke pretty much due to their lack of marketability (which IMO is such a bullshit category to judge someone on; it just proves how aesthetically founded we are as a society and for music as a corporation) There are a lot of brilliant players who will never see their dreams cause they don't please the audiences eyes. Music pleases the ears not the eyes IMO. But yeah I'd definitely love to hear some of these artists.
@surfer1211 Otis Rush, Fenton Robinson, Albert King, Elizabeth Cotton, etc... Just listen around some and you'll hear a lot more. It's unlikely Robert Johnson ever personally collected a royalty.
I don't dislike Mayer at all and feel he's probably a better songwriter than given credit for. He's condensed licks from many great players and repackaged them into a format fit for commercial consumption. Good for him and if it gets kids playing real guitars instead of "Rock Band" (LOL!), even better!
@jakeizlove at least) that he/his fans know about deeper rooted blues. Not to mention he can hold his own. Check Come When I Call & Out of My Mind. He is very original and I think he deserves credit for that and for introducing modern people to a world of amazing music; as opposed to singing about money and cars and coming to award galas in eggs. Btw, this wasn't intended to bash on you; Its kinda like a general defense of JM cause so many videos/people trash on him and its just plain ignorant.
@jakeizlove I think john mayer is original. you get inspirations from many different people. the people you've mentioned were probably alot of john's inspirations.. thats what makes a great blues player- inspirations and old heroes. that's why he does what he does. he has turned it into his own style and put a twist on blues: with his guitar playing AND his vocals.
@MrDannyHanson No disrespect but anyone with serious blues listening time can tell where every lick he played came from. I think the guy is a great player, packages things well, is marketable as all poop, yet totally unoriginal.
There's a ton of stuff out there in the blues world, very little of it is original. This statement covers Clapton, and just about everyone else. :)
@jakeizlove your a huge hater because you cant do any of those things and your jealous because youve never seen anyone bring this intensity to blues music so can it homes
@ttraver90 He a great player but not the least bit original. Possibly listening to more music and educating yourself will make more sense than arguing nonsensical points over the internet.
i dont understand why people who dont want to like something watch it. Put your negative energy elsewehere, its clear your prejudice or insecurity wont let you like Mayer .Maybe thats why Clapton, BB king, Buddy Guy, Herbie Hancock, Paul Simon, Ben Harper, Alicia Keys and Norah Jones and copuntless other real deal musicians wont be calling you to jam anytime soon
i am coming up on 40 years of playing and i judge a guitarist straight up and john mayer has the goods, he is an excellent guitarist and the haters on this line couldnt do 10 percent dick of what he does.
Fucking right, dude. I don't even have close to 40 years playing, but I want to say I can judge a good guitarist from a shitty one. John Mayer is the shit.
I'm a guy and all, but I think that I probably would've fainted if I would've been there. The best Cream song ever, being played live by such a great musician... wow...
I think that John's SRV's signature strat. In some videos you can see the srv signature at the top of headstock...I believe its the strat they base the JM sig strat off of. He's had it for a long time, but I could be wrong!
I see a lot of jealousy amongst guitar players regarding Mayer, saying he can't play the blues etc.
I obviously don't know the guy, but he appears so very fucking critical of himself, so much even that every piece of criticism he's been getting he gave to himself way earlier.
Ofcourse everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but I can't get my head around people that critisize Mister John Mayer,
He's the SRV of my generation, and to me, he's even bettter than SRV.
thats like calling SRV better than albert king. a clone can never be as great as the original. john mayer has the talent, but he doesn't know what to do with it. he just tosses bits of it out with no direction. hes too book trained in my opinion. his improv sounds rehearsed. you know EXACTLY whats coming, because you've heard it everywhere from renowned blues classics to "teach-yourself-to-play" instructional dvds. hes got the talent, but not the direction.
SRV shits all over Albert King. Call it sacrilegious, but in terms of chops and just straight up proficiency, there has never been someone better, especially in the realm of electric blues.
lol.. maybe not better than SRV.. but definately a large leap in the right direction for todays music. Even he'd say he isn't as good as stevie. Just to be able to bend 13s the way he did is a feat in itself. I'm on 11's and after an hour my hands start to cramp. Maybe one day.
well put. hes almost there, but he just can't see where to take his playing. its like if you've ever seen a dog sniffing around for a piece of food that its missed, and its right under its nose the whole time. hes got all that ability, but no objective. he doesn't know if he wants to be a pop crooner like michael buble, a blues man like clapton, a shredder like srv, or a sickly greeny-brown mix of all 3. you can only choose 1...and he hasn't yet. he might not ever.
Those comments regarding 'originality' are missing the point - the blues is probably the most derivative music form there is and SRV & Clapton would be the first to admit they copped most of what they know form the early masters.
Not much has changed except the sound and a bit more speed (although Hendrix was doing this 30 odd years ago!). I can hear BB and T-bone licks in every blues guitar player today.
say whatever you want about Mayer... if Clapton invites you to play with him at the Crossroads Festival, you're obviously doin' somethin' right. this version was kind of weak though.. excess tone.
I'm a Stevie Ray Vaughan fanatic, and I think people need to shut up about John Mayer. He's a good guitarist and he's played with Buddy Guy, BB King, and Double Trouble (so he can't be that bad).
He's showing no imagination? This song have been covered alot, by alot of different artists. How is this any different? It sounds like it has that "John Mayer Feel" to me.
Funny how Mayer gets slagged for the same thing Bonamassa does. Mayer's from Connecticut; not exactly home of the blues. But neither is upstate New York, where Bonamassa is from. Yes I've heard ALOT of Joe B. & it's probably because he doesn't venture too far out of his style, whereas Mayer does.
"thumbs-down" my comment if you want, im only discusin a subjective matter, if that bugs you, stop taking other peoples opinions so seriously. John Mayer has the potential to be one of the greats. he has the talent, what he HASN'T got, is the innovation, or the versatility. he plays in the same scale, and repeats the same licks, which are mostly repeats of SRV licks...which are repeats of Albert King licks. mayer is simply "shredding" the blues...thats not blues mentality.
yeah.. but this is just a cover man.. its just payin' tribute. Believe me man.. i agree with u. He needs to take the blues in a his own direction. I can't wait to hear his next album.. i just hope he gets away from pop.
average at best. He needs to learn how to stop overplaying everything he does and take a step back and learn to phrase it properly. this is BLUES not some fuckin yngwie malmsteen shredding.
how can anyone say that this isn't a display of john's imagination? his goal is to sound like john, and no one else. if that doesn't require creativity i don't know what does. give him some credit for taking so much shit in the beginning and not letting any of it sway him. that alone proves that nobody's opinion really matters anyway so save the breath. after all he's in a place where all of us only dream of...
why the damn hell must EVERYONE compare and compare and compare??? who cares where this guy or the other guy stand as far as rank and ability? this is John's take on this song at that moment in time. just let him do his thing and lets all stop trying to play judge and grade him on every move he makes. he's one of the most emotional players our time has ever heard... though there have been others in the past...
I am Mayer fan and loved the Trip recording and really like some of his contemporary tunes, as well (though not all of them, that's for sure) -- but this is not a great version of this great tune, in my opinion. T-Bone, Bobbly Blue Bland, Allmans -- this is B grade by comparison.
Just remember that this from at *least* two years ago, and this year he's only about 30. He's great now, but imagine how good he'll be 10 years from now.
one thing that pisses me off is all the teenage girls who are there to see him play that pop shit. they dont recognize how much of a blues player he is. he might have written some pop songs, but there's always blues incorporated in it somehow. keep rockin john
not saying John isn't an excellent guitarist..not saying 'he' doesn't feel what hes playing...not saying you don't. my point was just like kenny wayne sheppard, johnny lang,etc...they are propped up as the next 'best' blues guitarists..while they are not 'near' the best! meanwhile guys like eric gales and mato nanji from indigenous don't get their due. my problem is not with John...i dig him! my problem is with the music indstry. john is not a bluesman..john plays blues...very well.
so just b4 we all start saying john is the 'best' blues guitarist alive...listen to other people my friends. john is certainly not 'better' than buddy guy, clapton, winter, gales, nanji, trower, srv,bb,
John Mayerr is on the same level that Clapton is at these days. His playing is in a very sad state. The last I saw him play well was at the Cream reunion.
Gary is a totally different style. Santana is not to my tastes at all.
But the one player who has really surpassed a lot of these players is the man named Joe Bonamassa. Along with Ronnie Earl. They are the 2 of the very best living players along with Jimmy Lee, Buddy Guy and BB King. (Winter doesn't count as he's way out of it these days )
skillet.. the hard times that the white guys you mentioned..were SELF induced.. CHOSING to do drugs and then spiral into deep depression is NOT the same as a black man who grew up in a racist world that held him down and exploted his talents... besidees.,. doesnt every person have the capacity to feel pain? blues is not HOW much pain the artist endured.. but how they can relay it thriough the music...
true my friend..i think i was taken out of context by mayer fans...which i happen to be one of. my point was that john isn't a 'bluesman' blues fans know the folklore..and know what being a bluesman entails...dues paid,etc...self induced true..but still there. i mean john has more respect for the term 'bluesman' and what it means..than some of his fans do. he would tell you he is not a 'bluesman'. he is an excellent guitarist..on that we can agree!
name one blues great...one blues legend, who has not been through 'rough...really rough times. at one point or another. its sort of a pre-requisite for becoming a bluesman...a legend. these guys now playing blues..excuse me but truth is..a white boy whos had it pretty good all his life is gonna be missing that 'feel.' i ain't sayin' all white guys by no means...cuz SRV and Johnny winter definitely had 'hard times' and you can feel it when they play! nothin' against Mayer jus bein' honest
he mightn't have soul, he might be pop but least he's listnin and playin the right stuff man for instance just check out the pop charts nower days and tell me bout the soul there? i think you're bein too critical man
to put Mayers blues ability in context...search youtube for 'chantel mcgregor' then listen to her version of stormy monday. the young lady is mean and knows how to play some serious blues.
i love the guys music..but the record companies are gonna tout him as the next 'best' blues guitarist based on
sell-a-bility..even heard mayer fans sayin' he is 'better' than Buddy Guy..thatis nothing short of lunacy. But the record company knows they can sell Mayer. one youtube post calls Mayer a bluesman. this is the new age shit..blues as a fad. Mayer has not paid enough to be called a
Bluesman..i'm sure he would agree. Mayer is good..but there are many better 'blues' guitarist around.
No one can pull off the sequence of notes as precise and clear as SRV and no one will ever replace Clapton, BB, etc. John has written some great music,,cant overlook that. But he could take a few lessons from Clapton and learn how to hold the notes longer for more effect. Just my opinion.
I second that, being a GOD is more about fee than technique, SRV was only able to do the stream of notes thing becuase he was that talented, Mayer is good, but good and GOD are not the same tyhing.
Probably gonna get flamed here, but this is what I think. Mayer is a good/great player, with tasty licks, but I don't think he pulls off the stream of notes thing as well as SRV, nor does he convey to me the same soul, as say Clapton did at a similar age. I also think that he is a bit over-rated at the moment, I mean is he really god material? Has he actally had a major impact on music like Clapton, Santana, Page, Beck, Hendrix etc. Maybe he will have in the future, but I'm not sure he will.
1higherground, then mayebe you should shut up, cause obviously know one gives shit what you have to say... and i know for a fact that you cant play any better! so do your self a favor and never leave a comment agin unless you have somthing worth posting! whos inexperienced now bitch!
First, I don't think anyone who is credible can say that Mayer isn't a good player, and for darn's sake, give him some creit. That said, for all you Mayer heads who aren't convinced by all what SRV heads are saying check out the video on Youtube where you had Beck and Vaughn gigging to "I'm going down". Come back and then be serious: You actually think Mayer is in the same league with Vaughn? Vaughn blew Beck out of the arena, and we're talking about Jeff Beck!
SRV could play like nobody else. He was so damn good he not only made up his own funk but he could almost perfectly imitate many players like nobody before or after can. He could copy clapton, bb king, albert king, robert johnson, etc. Im still amazed at the level of talent that man had at such a young age.
Hi Einstein ... agreed on Vaughn. At the same time, I wish only the best for Mayer. Lots of people dis him because he plays poppy songs, but maybe that's the only way to draw the general pop fan to an awareness of the Blues?? e.g. Joe Bonamassa is great, but how many of general music fans know of him?? I try to find the best in all things and people -> while Mayer maybe can't play St. Mon. like Clapto, T-Bone, nevertheless people should want him to succeed. He's one of the best hope we have.
I'm probably the biggest mayer fan out there, but I don't think there is anyway he's in stevies league, no one was, mayer said that himself. And clapton wrote in his biography book that stevie ray vaughan was the best electric blues player ever hands down. thats a lot comming from clapton who is usually the biggest critic of everyone.
Imagine if everyone played ONLY their own songs....it would be a pretty boring world...I have been playing way before John was born...Liked him from the beginning and he just gets better with age....GO JM..NEVER listen to fools....and by the way POLY, you saying YOU THE ONLY ONE THAT KNOWS THE BLUES??? ALL OF US KNOW THE BLUES~
ok john plays stormy monday one night and everyone freaks out....he's a musician....maybe he was digging the song that night and wanted to play it..who knows..just grow up alright...what does it matter who plays the song better..
So the rich white kid from Conneticut has the blues huh? I'm crying for his famous ass...I don't know what it is, I used to be a big fan of his, but lately I've been really turned off to his music. He's a great guitarist, but hes not a real bluesman.
True, but once Rolling Stone has said so, it seems everyone else says so too, the power of mass media. Compared to the three Kings, Buddy Guy, Robert Johnson, a young Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, SRV, I don't think Mayer is really in the same league.
Pretty much, they contributed to the demise of Cream, and bagged out Led Zeppelin for the best part of thirty years, kinda says something don't you think?
Why does everyone want to be an SRV clone....he needs to find his own tone and style then he might have something. Jeez Kenny Wayne Sheppard was the same...what gives.
Thats the best playing I have heard of mayer, but I think he needs to try and play less notes, you know just let them hang more. SRV played lots of notes, but he also knew when to leave space for effect. Still, definitely Mayer's best effort in my opinion, and I am not a great fan of his.
Mayer definitely show's some of his best playing here... I wish he'd just do one album where it's all like this. He's got the talent.. he just needs to concentrate on dem blues
Everyone say's he's copying Stevie or Albert King or B.B. King but overall, he's a pretty original blues player. One of the most original in a while. He defiently borrows a little bit from Albert and B.B. and Freddie and stuff, but what do you think Stevie and Clapton were doing????
What the fuck is up with people? - who plays the best blues... who plays with soul... who doesn't. For fuck sake just listen and shut the fuck up. There's too much talk and I can't hear what's going on.
Well, he can play some blues, but he is not that good blues player, he is too mutch copycat of Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan... Watch Stormy Monday with Cream, from the reunion in 2005, that's blues
Stop making stupid comments and listen, he Has a great tone and a nice voice. Great performance. Blues is about feelings and not about age and skin color.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
im sorry to say, but Mayer is not a blues artist in the least bit, nor can he even claim to be a bluesman. he is a fantastic guitarist, but being a bluesman is not about the red carpet, its not about the people's choice awards, its not about talking to ryan seacrest in japanese, and for gods sake, its NOT dating jessica simpson! john mayer is talented, but when he plays the blues, he is just playing notes, not the "blues"
If hes not a blues player they why does B.B. and Buddy Guy and Clapton ask him to play with them ??? mayers play lots of music here! you need to listen to the blues player first and not just make these kinda comments. and when you spend time listening then make a Educated statement!
that is bullshit... hes got soul and plays the blues, i mean what is he playing here? if you dont think that these are blues, then YOU dont have a sense of what the blues are... you aint got no soul!
Iamemaster, you are wrong! Mayer's in it to win it. Its a competition by all means! He wants the recognition and respect that SRV has. Albeit he is an artist and that shouldn't be important to him...he's going for the gold....and you know what...I think he just might win.
Stop comparing guitarist's and making it a competition. Just watch the fucking video, I'm sick of every Mayer video I see arguments about that SRV or whoever is better. Just enjoy what you got.
Hendrix,Clapton,SRV,ect..they are all great guitarists in their own right, the thing is, now that I've gotton older, the only thing that interests me is my own guitar playing, click on my name and check out my vidz.
You can't compare guitarists. It's too objective. Mayer is a great guitar player, but I bet he doesn't have to put glue on his fingers like SRV because they bled from playing hard. I bet he misses notes, unlike Clapton who his so precise and clean. He can't give you one note from his guitar and bring like BB's Lucille. Let's see where he goes. He's continuing good music and I'm all for that.
cut the boy some slack. yes he's a fine guitarist, and yes, the SRV influence is clear, and it's a good performance...but this song could afford to be a bit more chilled. Mayer's phrasing in live performaces always seems to be complex: as though he's afraid to leave notes out (the way B.B. isn't). There's an economy about Clapton / T Bone performances of this song that make those guys seem perfectly comfortable with it, and I think Mayer could get there if he keeps working.
anyone who thinks john is better than stevie is crazy he is very good though but listen to his version of Little Wing and his Texas Flood version at the El Mocambo
Are you off of your f'ing meds? Have you ever listened to SRV? And listening to him one time 6 years ago doesn't count. As someone mentioned before, Mayer has no fire. I agree that he is a very good guitarist, but as good or better than Stevie Ray Vaughan? It's not even close. What an insult to SRV.
SRV is my favorite, but that has nothing to do with me thinking he's better than Mayer. Mayer isn't in the same universe as SRV, and if you can't hear that when you listen to them, I'm sorry for you. If you want to compare SRV to guitarists, you compare him to the likes of BB King,Hendrix, Clapton and Albert King. Mayer might improve, but it's pretty clear he won't drastically to be on the same level as SRV. Mayer doesn't have the intangibles SRV does.. but then again, not many have.
its funny if you do a blindfold test... you probably couldn't distinguish the difference between SRV and Albert King...but I think you could say John Mayer is in a different universe than SRV because, at least John Mayer has a more unique distinguishable sound..but that's just me talking..and i play the drums.
Dude, by 29 Clapton had done Yardbirds, John Mayall, Cream and changed rock music, Hendrix was dead, Santnan was paving the way for jazz-rock fusion, Slash had almost finished with Guns and Roses, by the time most musicians are thirty they have reached thier peak, with the exception of a few of the older bluesmen and SRV, so the likelihood of Mayer actually breaking few ground or becoming drastically better seem to be fairly slim don't you think?
I don't hear Stevie so much as I hear all the players that Stevie learned from. I just heard Albert King and Albert Collins, and just a dash of T-bone Walker maybe a slice of Freddie King. Now I hear some BB King. Some people think Stevie created every lick that he played. I just heard Jimi Hendrix. I just heard Eric Clapton.. I keep on, but you get the point.
I think JM thinks he is the reincarnation of SRV. To many similarities to list. guitar, licks, voice, even that little fist pump after the FACE MELTING solo (classic stevie move). Still, the kid can play. I bet Stevie is smiling down from guitar heaven;)
Mayer needs to start playing that guitar like this on his records. He shows off on the tours, but never really has those moments on any CD's even though every single CD he had made has been INCREDIBLE

I think that John's SRV's signature strat. In some videos you can see the srv signature at the top of headstock...I believe its the strat they base the JM sig strat off of. He's had it for a long time, but I could be wrong!
Stratoholic5000 2 years ago
No it's not, it's a vintage strat on wich he putted a tortoise pickguard with Bigg Dipper pickup's
His SRV strat has a reversed tremolo, and has a Poly finish, so he won't ever relic like that !

I see a lot of jealousy amongst guitar players regarding Mayer, saying he can't play the blues etc.
I obviously don't know the guy, but he appears so very fucking critical of himself, so much even that every piece of criticism he's been getting he gave to himself way earlier.
Ofcourse everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but I can't get my head around people that critisize Mister John Mayer,
He's the SRV of my generation, and to me, he's even bettter than SRV.
tissuechang 3 years ago
thats like calling SRV better than albert king. a clone can never be as great as the original. john mayer has the talent, but he doesn't know what to do with it. he just tosses bits of it out with no direction. hes too book trained in my opinion. his improv sounds rehearsed. you know EXACTLY whats coming, because you've heard it everywhere from renowned blues classics to "teach-yourself-to-play" instructional dvds. hes got the talent, but not the direction.
JIMMYJIBLETS 2 years ago
SRV shits all over Albert King. Call it sacrilegious, but in terms of chops and just straight up proficiency, there has never been someone better, especially in the realm of electric blues.
My .$02.

lol.. maybe not better than SRV.. but definately a large leap in the right direction for todays music. Even he'd say he isn't as good as stevie. Just to be able to bend 13s the way he did is a feat in itself. I'm on 11's and after an hour my hands start to cramp. Maybe one day.

john mayor always misses the point
by just a little bit. he has the talent to
play anything but he likes to show off
and it seems to wind up always sounding
much like anything else. he is off the mark. i guess he just dont have the
blues in him. what a waste.
sweetytwome2 3 years ago
well put. hes almost there, but he just can't see where to take his playing. its like if you've ever seen a dog sniffing around for a piece of food that its missed, and its right under its nose the whole time. hes got all that ability, but no objective. he doesn't know if he wants to be a pop crooner like michael buble, a blues man like clapton, a shredder like srv, or a sickly greeny-brown mix of all 3. you can only choose 1...and he hasn't yet. he might not ever.
JIMMYJIBLETS 2 years ago
I NOW rate him. Good performance. Ta for recording & posting..
jcsfx77 3 years ago
Those comments regarding 'originality' are missing the point - the blues is probably the most derivative music form there is and SRV & Clapton would be the first to admit they copped most of what they know form the early masters.
Not much has changed except the sound and a bit more speed (although Hendrix was doing this 30 odd years ago!). I can hear BB and T-bone licks in every blues guitar player today.
bluesbren 3 years ago 2
say whatever you want about Mayer... if Clapton invites you to play with him at the Crossroads Festival, you're obviously doin' somethin' right. this version was kind of weak though.. excess tone.
TLawsonjr 3 years ago
I'm a Stevie Ray Vaughan fanatic, and I think people need to shut up about John Mayer. He's a good guitarist and he's played with Buddy Guy, BB King, and Double Trouble (so he can't be that bad).
He's showing no imagination? This song have been covered alot, by alot of different artists. How is this any different? It sounds like it has that "John Mayer Feel" to me.
rukthor 3 years ago
Funny how Mayer gets slagged for the same thing Bonamassa does. Mayer's from Connecticut; not exactly home of the blues. But neither is upstate New York, where Bonamassa is from. Yes I've heard ALOT of Joe B. & it's probably because he doesn't venture too far out of his style, whereas Mayer does.
dagooch 3 years ago
john mayer is basically a copy of eric clapton and SRV, except they had originality...
JIMMYJIBLETS 3 years ago
"thumbs-down" my comment if you want, im only discusin a subjective matter, if that bugs you, stop taking other peoples opinions so seriously. John Mayer has the potential to be one of the greats. he has the talent, what he HASN'T got, is the innovation, or the versatility. he plays in the same scale, and repeats the same licks, which are mostly repeats of SRV licks...which are repeats of Albert King licks. mayer is simply "shredding" the blues...thats not blues mentality.
JIMMYJIBLETS 2 years ago
yeah.. but this is just a cover man.. its just payin' tribute. Believe me man.. i agree with u. He needs to take the blues in a his own direction. I can't wait to hear his next album.. i just hope he gets away from pop.

how can anyone say that this isn't a display of john's imagination? his goal is to sound like john, and no one else. if that doesn't require creativity i don't know what does. give him some credit for taking so much shit in the beginning and not letting any of it sway him. that alone proves that nobody's opinion really matters anyway so save the breath. after all he's in a place where all of us only dream of...
brunorolf 3 years ago
why the damn hell must EVERYONE compare and compare and compare??? who cares where this guy or the other guy stand as far as rank and ability? this is John's take on this song at that moment in time. just let him do his thing and lets all stop trying to play judge and grade him on every move he makes. he's one of the most emotional players our time has ever heard... though there have been others in the past...

I am Mayer fan and loved the Trip recording and really like some of his contemporary tunes, as well (though not all of them, that's for sure) -- but this is not a great version of this great tune, in my opinion. T-Bone, Bobbly Blue Bland, Allmans -- this is B grade by comparison.

not saying John isn't an excellent guitarist..not saying 'he' doesn't feel what hes playing...not saying you don't. my point was just like kenny wayne sheppard, johnny lang,etc...they are propped up as the next 'best' blues guitarists..while they are not 'near' the best! meanwhile guys like eric gales and mato nanji from indigenous don't get their due. my problem is not with John...i dig him! my problem is with the music indstry. john is not a bluesman..john plays blues...very well.
skillet54 3 years ago 3
so just b4 we all start saying john is the 'best' blues guitarist alive...listen to other people my friends. john is certainly not 'better' than buddy guy, clapton, winter, gales, nanji, trower, srv,bb,
carlos,jimmy vaughn,gary moore...etc...
skillet54 3 years ago

CHOSING to do drugs and then spiral into deep depression is NOT the same as a black man who grew up in a racist world that held him down and exploted his talents... besidees.,. doesnt every person have the capacity to feel pain? blues is not HOW much pain the artist endured.. but how they can relay it thriough the music...
augfive 3 years ago
true my friend..i think i was taken out of context by mayer fans...which i happen to be one of. my point was that john isn't a 'bluesman' blues fans know the folklore..and know what being a bluesman entails...dues paid,etc...self induced true..but still there. i mean john has more respect for the term 'bluesman' and what it means..than some of his fans do. he would tell you he is not a 'bluesman'. he is an excellent guitarist..on that we can agree!
skillet54 3 years ago
p.s.
name one blues great...one blues legend, who has not been through 'rough...really rough times. at one point or another. its sort of a pre-requisite for becoming a bluesman...a legend. these guys now playing blues..excuse me but truth is..a white boy whos had it pretty good all his life is gonna be missing that 'feel.' i ain't sayin' all white guys by no means...cuz SRV and Johnny winter definitely had 'hard times' and you can feel it when they play! nothin' against Mayer jus bein' honest

i love the guys music..but the record companies are gonna tout him as the next 'best' blues guitarist based on
sell-a-bility..even heard mayer fans sayin' he is 'better' than Buddy Guy..thatis nothing short of lunacy. But the record company knows they can sell Mayer. one youtube post calls Mayer a bluesman. this is the new age shit..blues as a fad. Mayer has not paid enough to be called a
Bluesman..i'm sure he would agree. Mayer is good..but there are many better 'blues' guitarist around.
skillet54 3 years ago
No one can pull off the sequence of notes as precise and clear as SRV and no one will ever replace Clapton, BB, etc. John has written some great music,,cant overlook that. But he could take a few lessons from Clapton and learn how to hold the notes longer for more effect. Just my opinion.
mlc520120 3 years ago 2
I second that, being a GOD is more about fee than technique, SRV was only able to do the stream of notes thing becuase he was that talented, Mayer is good, but good and GOD are not the same tyhing.
bnapoleonc123 3 years ago
Probably gonna get flamed here, but this is what I think. Mayer is a good/great player, with tasty licks, but I don't think he pulls off the stream of notes thing as well as SRV, nor does he convey to me the same soul, as say Clapton did at a similar age. I also think that he is a bit over-rated at the moment, I mean is he really god material? Has he actally had a major impact on music like Clapton, Santana, Page, Beck, Hendrix etc. Maybe he will have in the future, but I'm not sure he will.

Vaughn blew Beck out of the arena, and we're talking about Jeff Beck!
theontheoffwing 3 years ago
Here Here.
Mayer has funk and rocks it.
SRV could play like nobody else. He was so damn good he not only made up his own funk but he could almost perfectly imitate many players like nobody before or after can. He could copy clapton, bb king, albert king, robert johnson, etc. Im still amazed at the level of talent that man had at such a young age.
einsteinian 3 years ago
Hi Einstein ... agreed on Vaughn. At the same time, I wish only the best for Mayer. Lots of people dis him because he plays poppy songs, but maybe that's the only way to draw the general pop fan to an awareness of the Blues?? e.g. Joe Bonamassa is great, but how many of general music fans know of him?? I try to find the best in all things and people -> while Mayer maybe can't play St. Mon. like Clapto, T-Bone, nevertheless people should want him to succeed. He's one of the best hope we have.
theontheoffwing 3 years ago 2
of course John isn't in the same league as SRV.. that's just stupid to even compare the two and John would be the first to tell you that.
and his name is spelled Vaughan by the way. no offense, just a pet peeve of mine.
Beshimi 3 years ago
I'm probably the biggest mayer fan out there, but I don't think there is anyway he's in stevies league, no one was, mayer said that himself. And clapton wrote in his biography book that stevie ray vaughan was the best electric blues player ever hands down. thats a lot comming from clapton who is usually the biggest critic of everyone.

True, but once Rolling Stone has said so, it seems everyone else says so too, the power of mass media. Compared to the three Kings, Buddy Guy, Robert Johnson, a young Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, SRV, I don't think Mayer is really in the same league.

im sorry to say, but Mayer is not a blues artist in the least bit, nor can he even claim to be a bluesman. he is a fantastic guitarist, but being a bluesman is not about the red carpet, its not about the people's choice awards, its not about talking to ryan seacrest in japanese, and for gods sake, its NOT dating jessica simpson! john mayer is talented, but when he plays the blues, he is just playing notes, not the "blues"
SlimSteveG 4 years ago

DiamondDave42 4 years ago
You can't compare guitarists. It's too objective. Mayer is a great guitar player, but I bet he doesn't have to put glue on his fingers like SRV because they bled from playing hard. I bet he misses notes, unlike Clapton who his so precise and clean. He can't give you one note from his guitar and bring like BB's Lucille. Let's see where he goes. He's continuing good music and I'm all for that.
pmclellan47 4 years ago
Mayer got no fire in his playing, although it's very good it still isn't ergetic like Hendrix's or SRV, nor flowing like B.B's
Klappaclius 4 years ago
that was impressive but as sum1 said below the guys got no fire
connordoc 5 years ago
cut the boy some slack. yes he's a fine guitarist, and yes, the SRV influence is clear, and it's a good performance...but this song could afford to be a bit more chilled.

Mharr1s 4 years ago
SRV is my favorite, but that has nothing to do with me thinking he's better than Mayer. Mayer isn't in the same universe as SRV, and if you can't hear that when you listen to them, I'm sorry for you. If you want to compare SRV to guitarists, you compare him to the likes of BB King,Hendrix, Clapton and Albert King. Mayer might improve, but it's pretty clear he won't drastically to be on the same level as SRV. Mayer doesn't have the intangibles SRV does.. but then again, not many have.

I would be much happier because then I would be able to see SRV live :).
But seriosly, you can't compare SRV and JM. That would be like comparing Hendrix and BB. Both are good, but Hendrix still beats the crap out of BB.

Hei sn ot as talented as Stevie-no way. He is good, but not amazing-there's no fire there, and it doesn't touch me...

I think JM thinks he is the reincarnation of SRV. To many similarities to list. guitar, licks, voice, even that little fist pump after the FACE MELTING solo (classic stevie move). Still, the kid can play. I bet Stevie is smiling down from guitar heaven;)
bizzy1984 5 years ago
are those similarities or is he just copying SRV?
DukeDe 5 years ago
Copying I think, he's use the licks, but the fire and feel isn't there very much, especially compared to SRV.

Mayer needs to start playing that guitar like this on his records. He shows off on the tours, but never really has those moments on any CD's even though every single CD he had made has been INCREDIBLE
