I have a similar problem, it seems to happen for me with the computer has been switched on for a while, by the way was that large pop at 7 - 8 seconds for the Macbook? I've had mine at the Irish equivalent of the Genius Bar for over a week now they said they couldn't recreate the problem so I took home and on the same night recorded it. Unfortunately when I recorded it (with my phone) the vol was significantly lower than in real life, so I used audacity to increase the gain and show them
I think I know what's wrong with it- I'm in university so I'm always bringing my MB everywhere I go. When I googled the sound, ppl mentioned a balance mechanism in the comp. that can get off-kilter and make noise. Its interesting that during school it made the sound EVERYDAY, but now that school is finished for the summer the noise has stopped. I think it has to do with carrying the computer sideways and thereby screwing up that mechanism, because it hasn't left my house since and its fine now.
I have the exact same issue, and I've found various reports of others on the net that do experience this as well. I can rule out the hard disk since mine is running an SSD and it still produces this noise! I can also hear it when on mute, so no weird soundcard thing...
Did you figure out what it is yet? I'm thinking of returning mine... :(
They are replacing the sound card at the moment and I hope that fixes the problem I'll reply when I get it back
Can you still hear the static when the computer is muted and playing music (iTunes / VLC ) ? - Mine does.
It's like it builds up in intensity over a couple of minutes. I've had this problem since I removed it from the box. Highly frustrating

Kind of sounds like the processor from the old powerpc mac laptops. Maybe it's your processor or harddrive. Good luck.
