In December 1981, I went to see the Rolling Stones concert at the New Orleans Superdome. The opening bands were the Neville Bros followed by George Thorogood and the Destroyers . . .
This is definitely a Mardi Gras song...sorry, nuthin bout Lennon...is about a Mardi Gras Indian, who's gone..."never would bow, never would kneel" if you understood the Marid Gras indian tradition you would get it. no one knew 'bout the beatles when the indian were singing this songs in the street....next thing you will say my "big chief got a golden grown" is about paul mccartney! LOL
@Aerohog1 Uhhhh- neighborhood NO band? Where are you under the impression the Neville Bros. are from? Here's a hint UPTOWN!! Valence St.!! "Laissez les bon temps roule!!"
During my New Orleans years, I saw the Nevilles "up close and personal," in venues such as the original Tipitina's, Jimmy's, and The Dream Palace (now "The Blue Nile") dozens of times. This was when they were still what I considered the best "bar band" of all time. I can see that they lose none of their magic performing on a big stage in a concert hall. But I prefer them as I remember: myself pressed up against Tip's stage, people crowded together, everybody doing the amorphous hippie boogie.
This incarnation of the Neville Bros. clearly shows how their greatness is hard to capture in the studio.Almost tem minutes of funking genius and you wish it would go on for ten more. Eric Struthers absolutely killin on guitar, too.
