Sorry, but this was not Tchaikowsky's story. The music was composed by him indeed, for the ballet. However, the story was originally written by E.T.A. Hoffman.

@bittysnack: I don't think Tchaikovsky would care. He was asked to compose the music for the ballet, based on the tale by E.T.A Hoffman "The Nutcracker and the Mice King", which was the tale in which the ballet was based on. He only made the music.
