Nice! I have a round black non stick mess kit that I use for baking. Right now it's in the oven with some corn bread batter. It works great. If I have enough oil in the batter I don't need to worry about things sticking. I showed my friend how to bake in a mess kit. When his corn bread was done he put half in his 1960's GI mess kit. The bread was a perfect fit for the end of the mess kit. I have a stainless steel GI style mess kit on it's way, I can't wait to try it out.
to much baking soda, i used alot less and it turned out grate, witht eh tbsp of baking soda it taste like i was eating baking soda straight and i tried it a few times thinking that i might of mest up. but its all good in the hood now
I love watching your videos. It almost makes me feel like I'm actually cooking over a campfire, but every time I watch them I always want to go backpacking LOL!
healthy choice on olive oil....and put the cover back on while cooking so you can put coals on top. faster cooking and its a different texture. and some maple syurp looks amazing..... great vids
Thanks for posting. I ate bannock a lot growing up - my father was raised in High Level, Alberta. He never put sausage or syrup on it. I wish he had. I will be using this adaptation when I introduce it to my kids (all 3 of them!). I think I will call it dinner-pancakes. That should work. Wish me luck.
Bannock and sausage, yum. To save cleanup on the hands, you can just mush/mix it up in the bag. Scoop out to serve, if you want to reuse the bag, or cut off a corner and squeeze out like a pastry icer.
That was easy! First box I pulled out of the closet had my mess kit, a p-38 can opener, an original Leatherman tool, (first I ever owned), the leather case to my Silva Ranger, the diamond hone that fell off the back of my Gerber BMF sheath years ago, a can of Obenaufs LP that I've been looking for for about two weeks, (to treat my Gore-Tex boots), and an old stag handle Bowie knife that my uncle gave me before he died!! I owe you one Rob!!
Don't burn it? haha, just having fun.. Cook at a lower heat. Try for a light golden-brown. If you're using a pan, add some oil/fat/grease first. If you cook up some bacon or summer-sausage, your pan should be plenty greased. Otherwise, olive oil is easy to pack, healthy, and energy-packed. Butter has its own logistics, but tastes mighty good with about any bread.
Awesome! You've inspired me to go dig up my mil-surplus mess kit and do some good old outdoor cooking!! (wish me luck, I haven' the foggiest idea where It is!!)
Those kits are great. My older boys use them on camping trips to make their own stews and soups. Just wondering how much water to use? Great vid and great nature sounds
i too have a kit from 1945 that my dad got in a box of stuff from an auction, it's also in mint condition, i don't think it's ever been used, i was gonna use it until i saw the date that's stamped on it, what do you guys think?
whoa...1945! i would probably keep it mint and not use it..maybe display it in my house or something. cool stuff!!! always easy to get a new kit...but not so easy to get a mint one from 1945! :D
Have you no mercy man? You have to cook enough for all your viewers if your going to cook. I guess I'll go some where a cry over my own cooking. Good vid thanks. 5/5
Didn't your momma teach you not to talk with your mouth full....LMAO great video my friend, wrote down the recipe and cant wait to try it looks quite handy and very tastey 5 stars.
tip: I like to cook sausage(i take summer saugage with me whenever i go into the bush - it stays good without refredgerations for about a week) in my pan first and it oils the pan for me. I use less oil that way.
I was thinking perhaps you could open the top of the ziplock turn the bag inside out over your pan leaving one hand inside of the (formerly the outside of the bag) and do your work with your hand protected by the ziplock, less mess maybe?|!?
nice mess kit! same kit was being used in the army in the early 90's! that , a canteen cup, and some tri tabs gave us alittle comfort in some uncomfortable places! thx 4 the vid!
I will definitely do that my friend. I went over the recipe more but I had to edit out due to a plane goin by. Not something you can really re-film once your hands are coated in dough. The water is a mystery still - I just add a little here a there until it is dough like. I am trying to master the ratio still.
thanks man! :D i saw part of my dad's old mess kit from back in the 60's when he was in vietnam. it's pretty cool. how much space do they take up in the average backpack? (my backpack was bought in the camping section of walmart like 4 years ago, and looks like a school backpack... i need to buy a new one.)
I have this exact same mess kit, i use it as home as well as camping.

Two things :
first, could you in future include recipes and such in the side bar as on the video although cool, it is hard to read.
Secondly how much water do use in your Bannock?
Thanks and great vid

try coating your hands with a little bit of the olive oil before you mix it by hand. It stops the stickiness if you used too much water.
