  • I have this exact same mess kit, i use it as home as well as camping.

  • What is that Aluminium? You get the allzimers if it is later on down the road in life.

  • Clip the bottom corner of the bag and squeeze it into the pan.....no fuss, no muss.

  • How much water?

  • I had one of those army surplus mess kits when I was in the boy scouts. Memories of camping trips - wonderful !

  • Amazing, you are a really good cook and I am very pleased you decided to share you skills and tips with youtube.... Thanks : )

  • Nice! I have a round black non stick mess kit that I use for baking. Right now it's in the oven with some corn bread batter. It works great. If I have enough oil in the batter I don't need to worry about things sticking. I showed my friend how to bake in a mess kit. When his corn bread was done he put half in his 1960's GI mess kit. The bread was a perfect fit for the end of the mess kit. I have a stainless steel GI style mess kit on it's way, I can't wait to try it out.

  • cevapcici

  • What if you oiled the bag before putting the dough in it?

  • I just made some, it was great! I used tofu sausage and sugar free syrup, but it was fan fucking tastic!

  • He keeps fucking up and saying, "but, hey, that's alright", lol!

  • gya food for fags

  • @BallerSkier gay food huh? you sound retarded.

  • to much baking soda, i used alot less and it turned out grate, witht eh tbsp of baking soda it taste like i was eating baking soda straight and i tried it a few times thinking that i might of mest up. but its all good in the hood now

  • How long did it take to cook the entire meal?

  • @MsSpy Maybe 15 Minutes.

  • Great vid, but you need to back off on the sugar and syrup or you'll end up with diabetes like me.

  • I swear I could smell that sausage about half way through..... :-)...

  • I love watching your videos. It almost makes me feel like I'm actually cooking over a campfire, but every time I watch them I always want to go backpacking LOL!

  • Another great video, thanks for sharing. I like the add "WARTER" part in your recipe for Bannock mix :-)

  • healthy choice on olive oil....and put the cover back on while cooking so you can put coals on top. faster cooking and its a different texture. and some maple syurp looks amazing..... great vids

  • wen u take out the banock use a cheap bag and cutt the corner and just squeze it out less mess

  • @megatightlines that's a great idea....very martha stewart of you. I'll have to try that.

  • Thanks for posting. I ate bannock a lot growing up - my father was raised in High Level, Alberta. He never put sausage or syrup on it. I wish he had. I will be using this adaptation when I introduce it to my kids (all 3 of them!). I think I will call it dinner-pancakes. That should work. Wish me luck.

  • that bannock looks a little like watered down pancake mix!

  • Yum, I know what i'm doing this weekend. Thanks for the vid.

  • Thanks for the bannock recipe! -Bill

  • how long do u think that frozen sausage would last on a trip?

  • Great Video! I was happy to see you were using the sea to summit spork which is my favorite utensil! Celebrate Life! Laurie

  • Cool! I got a war dated mess kit with a GI knife, fork and spoon at the Medina gun show for 5 bucks.Havent cooked in it yet though.

  • @tk7263 Thats an excellent price, they were $15 and up at the Berea gun show when I worked it.

  • @canteencorner look good but could use bacon insted of sausage??

  • @tk7263 same here but i got mine from big way

  • you didnt need to even touch it. Just squeeze it out into the pan. sheeeesh

  • @NKGMAN - Troll

  • @NKGMAN Another tip is to put olive oil on your hands...keeps it from sticking..easy clean up.

  • Bannock and sausage, yum. To save cleanup on the hands, you can just mush/mix it up in the bag. Scoop out to serve, if you want to reuse the bag, or cut off a corner and squeeze out like a pastry icer.

  • lol big enough for 3 pepole he obviousely hasnt seen how a hillbilly like me can eat

  • i'm glad it broke... it's bad luck 2 cut bannock..... always break and eat with your hands....and i think it is meant 2 b a shared meal... good luck

  • That was easy! First box I pulled out of the closet had my mess kit, a p-38 can opener, an original Leatherman tool, (first I ever owned), the leather case to my Silva Ranger, the diamond hone that fell off the back of my Gerber BMF sheath years ago, a can of Obenaufs LP that I've been looking for for about two weeks, (to treat my Gore-Tex boots), and an old stag handle Bowie knife that my uncle gave me before he died!! I owe you one Rob!!

Btw, my mess kit reads CARROLLTON U.S. 1965.

  • Sounds like a wilderness treasure chest !

    Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • Don't burn it? haha, just having fun.. Cook at a lower heat. Try for a light golden-brown. If you're using a pan, add some oil/fat/grease first. If you cook up some bacon or summer-sausage, your pan should be plenty greased. Otherwise, olive oil is easy to pack, healthy, and energy-packed. Butter has its own logistics, but tastes mighty good with about any bread.

  • Awesome! You've inspired me to go dig up my mil-surplus mess kit and do some good old outdoor cooking!! (wish me luck, I haven' the foggiest idea where It is!!)

  • Those kits are great. My older boys use them on camping trips to make their own stews and soups. Just wondering how much water to use? Great vid and great nature sounds

  • thank u Rob fer dis "great" vid, the original stainless steel "military" mess kit is very useful even @ home, which i prefer! =o}

  • nice vid rob.... 5* as always... bye the way is there any problem with your site? there is a few days now aint open or not found the url... thanks

  • i too have a kit from 1945 that my dad got in a box of stuff from an auction, it's also in mint condition, i don't think it's ever been used, i was gonna use it until i saw the date that's stamped on it, what do you guys think?

  • whoa...1945! i would probably keep it mint and not use it..maybe display it in my house or something. cool stuff!!! always easy to get a new kit...but not so easy to get a mint one from 1945! :D

  • very very true lol thanks

  • Yummy! Sure looks good Rob

  • Makes me hungry just watching it. Great job. Hope to see more.

  • Have you no mercy man? You have to cook enough for all your viewers if your going to cook. I guess I'll go some where a cry over my own cooking. Good vid thanks. 5/5

  • hey rob can you get remakes of 1940 mes-kits

  • Unfortunately no, Dave Canterbury has new ones that are the same as the one I have, check out his surplus.

  • Good eats my man...

  • Didn't your momma teach you not to talk with your mouth full....LMAO great video my friend, wrote down the recipe and cant wait to try it looks quite handy and very tastey 5 stars.

  • Great vid. Nice historic piece of kit. I love outdoors camp cooking vids. Good job

  • oops sorry 25 years

  • Rob those are the same kits we used during Vietnam. The army had the same gear for about 50 years. It also makes a fair pressure cooker. Great vid

  • more then wanted w/e i luv my sweets not enough syrup :P

would turning th bag inside out work better or is the uncooked bannock tasty? 5*

  • Mmmmm veggan surprise.

I like my kit, it is all stainless.

  • im hungey

  • tip: I like to cook sausage(i take summer saugage with me whenever i go into the bush - it stays good without refredgerations for about a week) in my pan first and it oils the pan for me. I use less oil that way.

  • I may have to try that some time. I have never had bannock bread. Looks good though.

  • Great video bro! that looks delicious!

  • great video cant wait to try this when i get home

  • Very cool video Rob. I love making Bannock on the trail.... there is something about having fresh bread on a hike.... Great stuff!!!!!

  • Rob,

Another great vid but could you go with a shorter intro?

  • I was thinking perhaps you could open the top of the ziplock turn the bag inside out over your pan leaving one hand inside of the (formerly the outside of the bag) and do your work with your hand protected by the ziplock, less mess maybe?|!?

    what do you think?

    Just a thought

  • @osgkar ya im just saying

  • Just make the letters white :)

    Great video.

  • nice mess kit! same kit was being used in the army in the early 90's! that , a canteen cup, and some tri tabs gave us alittle comfort in some uncomfortable places! thx 4 the vid!

  • Rob,

    Two things :

first, could you in future include recipes and such in the side bar as on the video although cool, it is hard to read.

Secondly how much water do use in your Bannock?

    Thanks and great vid

  • I will definitely do that my friend. I went over the recipe more but I had to edit out due to a plane goin by. Not something you can really re-film once your hands are coated in dough. The water is a mystery still - I just add a little here a there until it is dough like. I am trying to master the ratio still.

  • Thanks so much.

  • where can we get a mess kit like that? i know they gotta be pretty rare nowdays though.

  • Dave Carries them at his shop, they should be the same but more likely from the 60's or 70's.

  • thanks man! :D i saw part of my dad's old mess kit from back in the 60's when he was in vietnam. it's pretty cool. how much space do they take up in the average backpack? (my backpack was bought in the camping section of walmart like 4 years ago, and looks like a school backpack... i need to buy a new one.)

  • Rob F. King of the Camp Cooks

  • breakfast fit for a king, nice job

  • try coating your hands with a little bit of the olive oil before you mix it by hand. It stops the stickiness if you used too much water.

  • Thanks, I will try that.

  • Great video man I really like making bannock bread.

  • Man that looks good. I will certainly have to try that.

  • The story sounds like Stand by me movie lol

  • Another Solid great video from the CanteenCorner!
