it's possible that it could be a substation where the low voltage side is arc faulting intermittently over and over on something and the power grid dispatcher has yet to receive the signal to cut the power to the substation (substations are designed to handle huge power drains, and consequently, they often self-destruct if there's a problem with the emergency response system that notifies the dispatcher to shut the station down in the event of a catastrophic malfunction.)

That is not what a transformer looks like when it overloads. There was a change in color with light intensity that I have never seen before. A huge amount of energy must have been needed to create that much light if it was as far away from the camera as it appeared to be. I doubt it was a coincidence that it occured during an electrical storm when it would be least noticed and harder to explain away.

If I had to guess I would say a transformer shorting out and exploding but they don't normally last as long. Try searching for 'Baton Rouge Louisiana Tornado' on youtube. It has a few exploding.
