  • very touching! would like to hear this song again and again!! gum se ab ghabrana kaisa.. gum sou baar mila..

  • I don't know my friend, you seem to have a very discerning eye. After seeing your comment, I had tried watching the hand cradling the chair but couldn't get it. May be, Mala sinha leaving the scene was in a huff remembering their care free college days vis-a- vis the slimy nature of her money minded husband. Please somebody correct me if somebody observes the hand.

  • a masterpiece!!!!!!!!!

  • after listening the song one will become speechless for some time , also for the impeccable voice of HEMANT KU,MAR

  • Timeless melody beautifully sung

  • what a song and what a voice , in my death bed i will like to hear hemantda.

  • Never has anyone recreated the magic of these timeless melodies. True, and straight from the heart. The beauty lies in the fact that everybody, beyond nationalities, language and religion, can relate to them.

  • Excellent song, remains in memory for ever. L.Chinnappa

    -Pradeep

  • wow this magic is disappeared from our industry and from lives.

this song has everything that u could expect from songs like emotions, music, pain and offcourse grt actors and voice

  • SEE A HAND CRADLING THE CHAIR AT 3. 06 FUNNY ,A FLAW NOT REALISED BY THE MAKERS

  • @tahniyathussen U SEE THAT... ELSE ARE ENJOYING THE SONG!!!!

  • What a song! Leaves a trail of sadness behind, which lingers for a long time.

  • Hemanta Mukhopadhay referred to as "The man with the golden voice" by Lata Mangeshkar, Md. rafi, Kishore Kumar....truly shows his class....he didn't need to go on a high scale or perform experiments, when he sang not even the best could turn the attention of the audience ears' away from his voice....such soft, melodical vibrancy in his voice........

  • Me in pain this song story of my life :(

  • poetry, music, singing and picturization, all beyond a+++

  • Beautiful lyrics

janne who kaise log the jinke pyaar ko pyaar mila,

  • i thank doordarshan for educating us with the older songs like these...but alas!! doordarshan has changed completely ...i miss the old doordarshan

  • awesome........lyrics can just get anyone to tears.........

  • No.1 sad song but Evergreen.

  • Tearful superb poetry sung so well by Hemantda

  • I miss these old style songs. Current movies have a very hurried pace with poor poetic quality. Most of songs from current movies are forgotten after a few months if not days and a lot involve vulgar dances.

  • I wish i was born in the times of these legends.. there is none like Guru Dutt

  • There can be no other Sachin Dev ...

  • After Hemant Kumar no one can sing better than Mr Pervez Bhatti (Binden), from Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

  • @naseemjo Actually I have a live recording of this song in Kishore's voice ...surely after HemantDa one would put Kishore.

  • OMG heard this song after so long!

    sucj a deep song x(. !

  • stop complaining =P

nah i love this song. its so true.

  • woh likhne waaley chaley gayey, woh gaane waaley chaley gayey...

    MANSOOR KHAN.

  • @mkny333 i agree

  • i love this song.....awesome lyrics....awesome singing and and amazing actor....

  • perfect simplicity.........amazing.........

  • Translation:

Do you know of any who loved and were loved in return afore

everytime I reached for the rose was wrapped in thorns galore!

  • i salute sahil ludhiyanvi 4 hislyrics in song

  • Could someone give me some translation of this beautiful poem? My dvd doesn't make the effort to subtittle any song; And watching "pyaasa" without understand any poem, it's really frustrating, a real pity!! Thanks for helping me

  • guru dutt- sahir- sd burman-hemant kumar highly talented quad 4 such a butiful gem. gr8 nostalgia of 50s, evergreen 4 future.

  • great song

  • Can expression of unrequited love be more heart rending? No. No. No.

  • jane wo kaise log the jinko pyar se pyar mila humne to jab pyar manga to kanto ka haar mila. kitna sach hai yahi duniya ki sachchai hai thank you

  • so true, kantoon ka haar mila

  • when you hear this song you can feel nowadays latest songs are dirt.the lyrics, music, playbackall just cant compare the quality

  • WHAT A LYRICS MAN........just speechless

  • simply ssplended

  • Does anyone know that Pyaasa was chosen by the Time Magazine as one of the 100 best movies produced so far in any language in the world, It's music was also praised, in the same report.

  • my dear friend mr. lalwani,

time magazine is a heavily biased magazine masquerading as an intellectual magazine. yes, there are good things to gain from it but they also withhold tremendous info and are highly selective in their printings.

this coming from someone who has read in excess of 100 time magazines for more than half a decade now.

    peace.

  • what a beautiful song-that was the time when socially important and relevant filsm were made in India under name of hindi films and not vulgar bollywood. at that time the story. songs lyrics all were so good that we re,mebr that even after 50 years. even 25 years youngsters sing those songs.

paysaa was a masterpiece and one of the best movie of world cinema of all time.

sad song about a poet who is used by capitalists for their ends.-that is the theme of story.

  • I have been hearing this song since childhood. Does anyone know to translate it for me. It always makes mother cry.

  • yes i can do for u..gv me ur e mail id

  • The lyrics are a great lament of unrequitted love. " who were those who's love was requitted with love, whenever I asked for a happiness all I got was a garland of thorns (meaning sorrows) and so on....

  • Ruth,

We can do a literal translation of this song for you - but a lot will be left out of that. Somehow , the soul of this song is so difficult to capture - it is a masterpiece in poetry. The first line of the song can be crudely translated as "Blessed are the people whose love was reciprocated..."

  • 'Gham se ab ghabrana kaisa gham sau bar mila' Also, 'humko apna saya tak aksar bezaar mila! Wah, kyat baat hai! what lyrics! at his poignant best!! Hemant rendering is simply mesmerising. And what about SD's music? Materpiece of all time!!

  • wouldn't mukesh impeccable for this one?? wonder he never sang for guru dutt ever;

    only rafi saab; not even kishore or mannadey;

or mahindra kapoor; i think this was tailor made

    for mukesh;

  • Shama475,

You might be a Mukesh fan. He was a good singer. But don't spoil this song.

    Moti Lalwani

  • It is sung by great Hemant Kumar, not mukesh.

  • What can I say about this song. Whenever I hear this song, I stop everything I was doing and listen with all my soul in my ears. Cant do anything for atleast ten minutes after it finishes

  • This is one of the greatest treasures of Indian Film, effortlessly sung by Hemant Kumar.

  • This seems to be a sad song, but still Guru Dutt sings it with a smile...Amazing...

  • I guess you could call it a sarcastic smile in acceptance as well as defiance of what a poignant truth his life has been all along.

  • I have always thought a more serious face would have been better not only during this song but at many other places in the movie. It still remains one of the greatest movies ever made.

  • One of the most beautiful songs of all time.

  • It it just me or Guru Dutt and Pran really have similar (not same) facial features and expressions. Were they separated at birth. What say?

  • The gospel of tragedy!!!! Poetry never got better. This should be a textbook for people who want to let out their feelings of hurt. Indeed, as all of you say, it IS 100% a Masterpiece

  • I do not understand ...this video has been able to clock just 6000 odd views!!!

  • @CitizenSid , evergreen gems like this song were brainchild of legandary lyricists like Sahir Ludhianvi, Shakeel Badayuni, Hasrat Jaypuri, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, and many others great poets.

  • this song is my life
