a teacher from my school died from the fire.she used to yell at me when i was in 6th grade. now im in 7th. I live in escondido. i was so scared. we had a whole bunch of family who came to my house because we were not evacuated. in the morning it was pitch black at my sisters apartment.
As a San Diegan, the music makes sense. The pictures are of the mayor and other officials who allowed politics to get in the way of fighting these fires. The military helicopters and planes were not allowed to help fight. So, the military was gounded and unable to help because of politics from these people.
This video brings it all back, especially that feeling of helplessness as the fires just were seemingly uncontrollable. Thank goodness for the people who serve in fire fighting, rescue services, law enforcement, and the armed forces...and all the others on the front lines that did whatever they could. Without them, I can't even imagine how much worse this could have been. Vote for more fire services, prevention measures and smarter growth restrictions in our backcountry.
A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. Oh, just for clarification, I don't work for the Fire-Rescue dept. However, I am in awe of their dedication, along with regional, state and federal and neighboring states' firefighters. Heroes. Plain and simple.
I will say I was completely flabbergasted that Mayor Sanders refused a raise for firefighters. And to say that the market, meaning they are replaceable, was consistent with the salary, even though San Diego becomes more expensive every year, was an inexcuseable statement and a political blunder. I hope he is man enough to reconsider in light of yet another example of extraordinary bravery exhibited by our City dept.
The City can only do so much. The Fire-Rescue, Police and City staff that mobilize in the face of an emergency are terrific. My part-time neighborhood was saved by a mix of volunteer firefighters, CDF and firefighters from all over the west. I am eternally grateful.
We have to pay for more services. Plain and simple. I pay more as a property owner in my part-time residence because we voted in the new tax. These dedicated men and women in the fire service deserve every tool available.
This video was intended for the public to see the way the City of San Diego has pissed on the Fire Department over the last five years, and regardless the firefighters and trucks contiune to roll and provide the highest quality of care and fire supression. Just to open your eyes to what we face daily!
Why has the City been pissed at the FD over the past 5 years? If anything, the FD has the right to be pissed at the City for its gross underfunding. I mean, I live here myself, and being a fire buff, I've heard complaints about the City from firefighters first hand. You guys rock, and I hope to join you as soon as I'm old enough!
And also, I think it's strange that the City has 3 million to spend on developing Fiesta Island, yet they can't scrape up a third of that to spend on something important, like say, a couple new apparatus.
And NO ONE feels more for the vitims than those of us who were out there on the line. You would be hard pressed to find anyone who cares more than the men and women who are ready and willing to put it all on the line 24/7 for you.

If anyone has a story to tell about the California Wildfires, you should check out the site CaliforniaWildfireStories. com! It is a great site with a good purpose!! =)
Think about it? we are in the harshest housing reccession our country has ever experienced, home sales are at their lowest, and construction jobs are at their worst, firemens salaries where stale and their benefits are not to par with our inflation rate, whose fault? our fault, the voters of San Diego county. Maybe we should stop investing millions into our own greedy, vain gardens and back yards, and start putting the money into a strong rooted organization such as our firemen and women,
Things have been crazy around here! I hope everyone has what they need to pull through this ordeal. To see my fire story, click on my name. We survived the San Pasqual Vally burning!
how come is it that we can land on the moon and take over other nations in matter of days but when it comes to the most primitive natural disaster such as fire, we are helpless and count on mother nature to stop!
I live in California and actually live in San Diego and I had to evacuate so I see this first hand and I disagree. They are building homes pretty much every where overlooking fire potential hazards and all cities are growing too fast not ready for such events.
Next time you decide to call someone an idiot make sure you know what you are talking about first!
and just how do propose to stop a wall of fire moving at up to 100 mph ??? its a fact of life that plants burn we build in it and will continue to build there. get over it.
All you Californians be sure to wave hello to GW Bush when he flies over today in his airplane with "Ahhnold" for a look-see-dog-and-pony-show, an has a 3-martini lunch before dashing back off to Wash DC again to make sure he has the next batch of weekend-warriors all lined up for Halliburton "Rent-a-Cop" service in Iraq's oil fields. (ps: Remember to vote GOP in November, because GW Bush loves Iraqi crude oil more than he does displaced CA homeowners)
What most don't get is that people are suffering regarding of what they say or see on CNN or Fox TV. I Live near, and things are bad, the air around is so bad, it looks like an eclipse is about to accur.. Southern CAL is going through dark times..literally..
actually the native plants are worse, the chapparral and manzanita burn faster and hotter than the eucalyptus trees do, the plants that are used to fire adapt to it, some even live an die by it, we should be so glad in socal we don't have too many douglas firs!
it's about fire management, fire breaks, controlled burns...etc....
What most people don't understand is that San Diego's ecosystem falls under the definition of a chaparral, and with that includes a dependence on fire. This county's vegetation has adapted to the presence of fire, and now requires it in many ways. Many plant species are only able to germinate or reproduce after the occurance of a fire. Many other species have developed fire-retardant characteristics, as to perserve themselves and to prevent widespread fires.
These facts need to be kept in perspective though. The fires we're facing today and those from four years ago are unlike the naturally occuring ones this ecosystem is used to. The fires that natually occur in a chaparral are much smaller, as they normally occur during spring and mid-summer, when humdity levels are much higher. However, SD county's practice of fire prevention has stopped these smaller fires from doing their job, and has resulted in a build up of fuel.
In fact, some area's of SD have not burned for over a century. When you consider that the normal fire cycle for this type of chaparral is 30-35 years, what you wind up with is a mass overabundance of fuel. It's this overabundance combined with early fall Santa Ana winds and low humidity levels that has put us in the situation we're currently in.
What I'm trying to get at is that SD county's current fire prevention policies are insufficient. Baja California has not practiced fire prevention at nearly the same degree as SD. Fires are often permitted to burn small acreages of land, and as a result there's a larger vairety in fuel density and plant age throughout the region, making it highly unlikely for huge fires to develop. SD's policy of preventing all possible fires has actually contributed to the creation of our current situation.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to insult or offend anyone. I've lived in SD all my life, and have many friends and family members who've been affected by today's fires.
What I'm suggesting is a change in policy that will help prevent the creation of the conditions that make these types of huge, uncontrolable fires possible.
We need to use controlled fires to clear out build ups of combustable plant material and to assist in the natural cycle of our ecosystem, making this environment safer for people, plants, and animals.
We need to use controlled fires to clear out build ups of combustable plant material and to assist in the natural cycle of our ecosystem, making this environment safer for people, plants, and animals.
i live next to qualcomm stadium and i must admit i never dreamed i would be a part of anything like this. i have actually gotten a really bad sore throat from the poor air so i can only imagine all those people staying there sleeping in tents. this sucks , its way worse than it seemed like it was gonna be at any given point.
Very sad we watched 240 homes go up in flames 2003 in Kelowna very sad too watch..peanuts compared to the monster you guys are facing...good luck all. Firefighters here in BC Canada are waiting for the call and the'll be there in a flash if needed.
Dont try to be a hero and stay if told to leave then do it!
still this fire is raging out of control on of the 8 is 5% contained....it sucks if you can....stay in the neiborhood and fight for your own house cuz the firefighters cant do it all
24 people are retarded idiots.

Think about it? we are in the harshest housing reccession our country has ever experienced, home sales are at their lowest, and construction jobs are at their worst, firemens salaries where stale and their benefits are not to par with our inflation rate, whose fault? our fault, the voters of San Diego county. Maybe we should stop investing millions into our own greedy, vain gardens and back yards, and start putting the money into a strong rooted organization such as our firemen and women,

how come is it that we can land on the moon and take over other nations in matter of days but when it comes to the most primitive natural disaster such as fire, we are helpless and count on mother nature to stop!

Another big problem is non native plants
The worst is the eucalyptus tree.
In dry windy conditions explodes instead of burns.
And it litters the ground with very reactive litter, helping to spread a small spot
Into something that is out of control before anyone can get it out
Cut them all down
JONSEREDdotWS 4 years ago
actually the native plants are worse, the chapparral and manzanita burn faster and hotter than the eucalyptus trees do, the plants that are used to fire adapt to it, some even live an die by it, we should be so glad in socal we don't have too many douglas firs!
it's about fire management, fire breaks, controlled burns...etc....

Cail we used a Controlled fire up north near San Onofree(SP)? and its now shot off the 5, Granted it is the best choice but not in all situations.

Many other species have developed fire-retardant characteristics, as to perserve themselves and to prevent widespread fires.
cialiticesp 4 years ago
These facts need to be kept in perspective though. The fires we're facing today and those from four years ago are unlike the naturally occuring ones this ecosystem is used to. The fires that natually occur in a chaparral are much smaller, as they normally occur during spring and mid-summer, when humdity levels are much higher. However, SD county's practice of fire prevention has stopped these smaller fires from doing their job, and has resulted in a build up of fuel.
cialiticesp 4 years ago
In fact, some area's of SD have not burned for over a century. When you consider that the normal fire cycle for this type of chaparral is 30-35 years, what you wind up with is a mass overabundance of fuel. It's this overabundance combined with early fall Santa Ana winds and low humidity levels that has put us in the situation we're currently in.
cialiticesp 4 years ago
What I'm trying to get at is that SD county's current fire prevention policies are insufficient. Baja California has not practiced fire prevention at nearly the same degree as SD. Fires are often permitted to burn small acreages of land, and as a result there's a larger vairety in fuel density and plant age throughout the region, making it highly unlikely for huge fires to develop. SD's policy of preventing all possible fires has actually contributed to the creation of our current situation.
cialiticesp 4 years ago
Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to insult or offend anyone. I've lived in SD all my life, and have many friends and family members who've been affected by today's fires.
What I'm suggesting is a change in policy that will help prevent the creation of the conditions that make these types of huge, uncontrolable fires possible.
cialiticesp2 4 years ago
We need to use controlled fires to clear out build ups of combustable plant material and to assist in the natural cycle of our ecosystem, making this environment safer for people, plants, and animals.

Wow, some of these comments are ridiculous!
California is about as unsafe as any other city in the world. We're prone to earthquakes but at least we don't get hurricanes and tornados.
Natural disasters occur anywhere at any given date and time, and frankly, you'd have a hard time evacuating your own home too.
Try to be sympathetic and don't waste our time with your heartless, bullshit opinions, ok? Thanks.

i live next to qualcomm stadium and i must admit i never dreamed i would be a part of anything like this. i have actually gotten a really bad sore throat from the poor air so i can only imagine all those people staying there sleeping in tents. this sucks , its way worse than it seemed like it was gonna be at any given point.
