I think ive asked this before, but then again maybe not. Great video, I have one question though. When airbrushing, how do you keep the paint from getting in the wheels and gears? I would think the paint would mess up the gears and electrical conductivity.. how do you keep that from happening?
Amazing! Thats a good weathering job. I am thinking about buying this locomotive in regular DC version. Do you recommend this locomotive? Does it run well?
How do you make sure that no paint or powder gets on the pick up strips, wheels, or internal mechanisms? I love the way this turns out and i want to do it to my own trains, but i need to make sure theres nothing im missing ..
@157RANDOM Hi there, I belive you, maybe take the engine apart, and remove the the clear plasic windows, do your weathering and dullcote, and then reinstall the windows?
Thanks for this video im new to the hobby and saved this to my favorites so ill be able to go back and follow you when time to do my locos comes. But first im gonna concentrate on my layout and then worry about engines later on . But you did a great job and the engine couldnt look better than that, I hope I dont screw up when I do it the first time lol... Thank you again for putting this video on here..
I like that fuel tender, is it scratch-built or did you get it as-is??
I use exactly the same techniques, do you find you lose some of the colors of the pigments after the dullcoat? Of late, ive sinned and left some of my weathering unprotected for fear of losing it from dullcoat.
Hi formidable38 , Yes, I also loose some of the colors from the dry pigments, so I add too much color to compensate, or I will add some pigment after dullcote, and dullcote again. untill im satisfied.
@formidable38 Hi formidable38 , Yes, I also loose some of the colors from the dry pigments, so I add too much color to compensate, or I will add some pigment after dullcote, and dullcote again. untill im satisfied.
@Fly3rman I don't know anything about the music, It is one of those free tracks, that YouTube offers. If I could have chosen any song without worrying about rights, I had chosen VolBeat - Maryanns Place ...see my favorits
@Peterraev your spelling didnt stop anyone else from understanding so dont worry we understand if the other clown who cant spell worse than you doesnt like it he should just find another site ...
@1974nyarlathotep Interesting that you browsed through a few months of comments and then felt the need to try and pick a fight with me. I was probably only being a bit silly when I wrote that and I did say the paint was done nicely as well as remarking to my weakness in only being able to speak one language. Sorry if I offended you. Perhaps you should spend your time responding to constructive comments and discussion and not waste yours and my time responding to something I wrote 7 months ago.
One Part could be anything, I believe he uses a small eye dropper, since he mixes his paint in the Airbrush cup, his parts are small, one part could be one drop, or one part could be 5 drops...
@csxmanindiana Its a ratio example 1 part gray for 5 parts brown, so if you put 10 drops brown you would put ? Answer -2 parts gray. If you put 15 parts or drops brown you would add ? 3 parts or 3 drops grey . Its just a ratio of how you mix things and the amount compared to the other things in the mixture...
This is great, I love to see people weather and detail their equipment... this is what model railroading is about, don't get me wrong its nice to get it right out of the box and be rolling but its always nice to say "hey this is what I did" I use Floquill paint, they have great selections of paint for weathering .I will definitely use some of your techniques.
Yes, I use microscale decals, I soak them in tap water, but I use "Micro set" on my model before applaying the decal, and then I use "Micro sol" when the surface is uneven.
Great weathering tutertorial, & techniques!!! How does the diesel stay attached to the block of wood? Thanks for posting the weathering medium's, & mixtures too!
I clean my wheels by wetting a piece of cloth with Airbrush thinner, lay the cloth on your tracks. switch on the power, and clean one truck at the time, by holding your engine right on the cloth, while it's "running"
That is Amazing!!!!!! i have just recently started the hobby. I want to know if the paint and/or the dry pigment get up in the weel mechanisms and "gunk" things up. Thanks!!!!
man i wish i could do that, im thinking of trying this but i think i sould start small, very small, i think ill test it on some of my old kit hoppers, im getting a atlas dash 8 soon CSX stealth and i want to weather it but im afraid if i mess up thats it cause well they dont make em anymore so ill be lucky to get it :S, i got a protype picture though!
if you have an engine you don't want to mess up, practice on some other engines Then do a little bit of weathering and see how it is. Better to do too little then too much. keep at it until you have it just right. Theres an article in the January 2009 model railroader that has a weathering how to on an atlas 8-40B
I do get some paint on the wheels. You can remove that by wetting a piece of cloth with Airbrush thinner, lay the cloth on your tracks. switch on the power, and clean one truck at the time, by holding your engine right on the cloth, while it's "running"
Peterraev I read two articles on removing factory painted lettering. One used micro sol and a pencil eraser. The other used solvaset decal setting solution and a sharpened coffee stirring stick and a Q-tip. They did warn not to rub to hard with the solvaset because it softens the paint. Just thought it may help!
Very nice work Peterraev! What did you use to mask the windows? Also did you need to clean the wheels when finished? I have airbrushed equipment and find it necessary to do so!
I use masking film, I bet you can buy it the same place you bought your airbrush. it sticks very pourly, like post-it labels, so it can be moved around whithout sticking to hard to the surface, also easyer to remove than regular masking tape. I poor some drops of alcohol or airbrush thinner on a piece of cloth, span it over the rails, and hold the engine right over the cloth hwile the engine is running, this will clean your wheels
Hi there. as I'm not familiar with the brands and names of products in the US. I can only guess. but danielsmith.c o m has dry pigments that looks just like the ones i use.
Really nice work - thanks for sharing your techniques - I'll be sure to "leverage" them... please post more if possible...
