  • Really nice work - thanks for sharing your techniques - I'll be sure to "leverage" them... please post more if possible...

  • why wouldnt you have decaled then weathered? masking, then weathering then decaling seems ass backwards

  • @vellieux Hi there. thanks for your interrest. I figured that that would be the best way to make it look repatched.

    Peter

  • excellent!

  • I think ive asked this before, but then again maybe not. Great video, I have one question though. When airbrushing, how do you keep the paint from getting in the wheels and gears? I would think the paint would mess up the gears and electrical conductivity.. how do you keep that from happening?

  • looks good, but man that music is f**king gay!!!!!

  • Amazing! Thats a good weathering job. I am thinking about buying this locomotive in regular DC version. Do you recommend this locomotive? Does it run well?

  • VERY nice work and video! Thanks a bunch for taking the time to post it!

  • How do you make sure that no paint or powder gets on the pick up strips, wheels, or internal mechanisms? I love the way this turns out and i want to do it to my own trains, but i need to make sure theres nothing im missing ..

    Thanks

    -another model railroader

  • Gostei muito deste video

  • @aoaaei Obrigado, talvez você também gosta do meu videor outros

  • for windows you can use Maskol, very easy.

  • Its Burlington Northern (BN) NOT Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF).

  • When using the airbrish, how did you keep the locomotive attached to the block of wood?

  • @Steamtostay Gravety holds the engine, just sits on the block, just make sure to hold the block level.

    Best, Peter

  • @Peterraev how much you wanna bet bnsf already repainted the engine in its colors

  • @1998ChevroletS10 they didint almost all sd60ms are still green but a couple , before u make a stamemnt like that and get mad at BNSf check ur facts

  • @BNSF9250 i wasnt mad i was just stating a statement

  • @1998ChevroletS10 well ur statement is false as BN 9250 todays BNSF 8150 is still in BN green with most of the BN SD60ms

  • @BNSF9250 well srry i dont look up history about bnsf only ns and the rest of them

  • @1998ChevroletS10 u dont have to look it up , u figure out by being out there and by hearing from other railfans and the Ns isnt great.

  • @BNSF9250 true but its better to look up wuts new with ns and how do you think they get there info

  • Great job thanks for sharing the technique -

  • tapeing the windows is a lot harder on an n scale loco. do you have any tips?

  • @157RANDOM Hi there, I belive you, maybe take the engine apart, and remove the the clear plasic windows, do your weathering and dullcote, and then reinstall the windows?

  • @Peterraev thanks

  • @Peterraev take the shell apart man then take out the windows

  • Thanks for this video im new to the hobby and saved this to my favorites so ill be able to go back and follow you when time to do my locos comes. But first im gonna concentrate on my layout and then worry about engines later on . But you did a great job and the engine couldnt look better than that, I hope I dont screw up when I do it the first time lol... Thank you again for putting this video on here..

  • well done my friend

  • @ble909 Thanks

  • I like that fuel tender, is it scratch-built or did you get it as-is??

I use exactly the same techniques, do you find you lose some of the colors of the pigments after the dullcoat? Of late, ive sinned and left some of my weathering unprotected for fear of losing it from dullcoat.

    Very nice work.

  • Hi formidable38 , Yes, I also loose some of the colors from the dry pigments, so I add too much color to compensate, or I will add some pigment after dullcote, and dullcote again. untill im satisfied.

Oh, -the fuel tender is a RTR from Athearn

    Peter

  • wow awesome dude, could you tell me the name of the music?

    really good job.

  • @Fly3rman I don't know anything about the music, It is one of those free tracks, that YouTube offers. If I could have chosen any song without worrying about rights, I had chosen VolBeat - Maryanns Place ...see my favorits

  • Very realistic. I should try that on my Santa Fe Alco.

  • Comment removed

  • @307OLDS none not non (none the less you tried to spell correctly) lol clown.. Who cares about spelling as long as you can understand what is meant ?

  • Nice work. Did you detail the engine at all or is that strait out of the box

  • very cool vid!

your loco came out looking very nice...just like the real one!

    5 stars plus a subscription!

    peace

    ---jerry

  • I don't know why but your spelling mistakes make me nervous. Looks very well done.

  • Sorry about the spelling, please forgive mem but my fist language is not english

  • Ahh I don't care, I can only speak one language. Did a good job on the paint, very good information.

  • @Peterraev your spelling didnt stop anyone else from understanding so dont worry we understand if the other clown who cant spell worse than you doesnt like it he should just find another site ...

  • @DirPaulyB I dont know why but you make me nervous worried about how he spelled , are you a clown too ?

  • @1974nyarlathotep Interesting that you browsed through a few months of comments and then felt the need to try and pick a fight with me. I was probably only being a bit silly when I wrote that and I did say the paint was done nicely as well as remarking to my weakness in only being able to speak one language. Sorry if I offended you. Perhaps you should spend your time responding to constructive comments and discussion and not waste yours and my time responding to something I wrote 7 months ago.

  • Wow! Great work on the weathering. I can't wait to weather my locos and rolling stock!

  • What does 1 part mean and how much is 1 part? Very new to airbrush and need help on this area? THX

  • One Part could be anything, I believe he uses a small eye dropper, since he mixes his paint in the Airbrush cup, his parts are small, one part could be one drop, or one part could be 5 drops...

  • its a ratio, for example, 1:1 or 1:2 (1 mL paint to 1 mL thinner) (1 mL paint to 2 mL thinner) hope this helps

  • @csxmanindiana Its a ratio example 1 part gray for 5 parts brown, so if you put 10 drops brown you would put ? Answer -2 parts gray. If you put 15 parts or drops brown you would add ? 3 parts or 3 drops grey . Its just a ratio of how you mix things and the amount compared to the other things in the mixture...

  • it looks awesome could you have a look at my video of my weathered freight cars and give me some tips?

  • Congratulations!!, How do you attach the loco to wood block?

  • Cool stuff -- my three year-old loves to watch this one with me.......

  • very cool i'll have to watch this again for inspiration

  • you should do that BNSF faded Dash 9 4527 the desert punkin

  • This is great, I love to see people weather and detail their equipment... this is what model railroading is about, don't get me wrong its nice to get it right out of the box and be rolling but its always nice to say "hey this is what I did" I use Floquill paint, they have great selections of paint for weathering .I will definitely use some of your techniques.

  • do you use microscale decals? if so, can you use just water to "activate them" or make them sticky? or do you need some special decal solution?

  • Yes, I use microscale decals, I soak them in tap water, but I use "Micro set" on my model before applaying the decal, and then I use "Micro sol" when the surface is uneven.

    Peter

  • do u have the list of paint colors that u use to weather with like who makes them and what colors

  • I use Testors Model Master.

white, light grey and Dark skintone

    Peter

  • this is awesome. thanks for not only showing...but explaining

  • Thanks, I appreciate it

  • you got tallent

  • Thanks

  • Great weathering tutertorial, & techniques!!! How does the diesel stay attached to the block of wood? Thanks for posting the weathering medium's, & mixtures too!

    AL

  • Gravety holds the engine, just sits on the block, just make sure to hold the block level.

  • Nice job! It looks just like the prototype picture.

  • Thanks.

  • Great weathering echniques, but lets get rolling woo hoooo! yeea.... oh is that it?

  • peter you have good balance on the block of wood.

  • I have worked 2 winter seasons as a waiter in St. Anton, balancing beers and drinks through an afterskiing croud 4 days a week. -maybe that why?!?

  • Thanks for the tips....and taking the time to post vid...

  • I clean my wheels by wetting a piece of cloth with Airbrush thinner, lay the cloth on your tracks. switch on the power, and clean one truck at the time, by holding your engine right on the cloth, while it's "running"

    Peter

  • is it ok if i use the airbrush without blocking off the wheels? or should i block them off?

  • I dont block of the wheels, they need weathering too. I clean the contact surface after finishing the loco.

    Peter

  • ok cool thanks. do u have any good ways to clean ur wheels?

  • how do u weather track????

  • Buen trabajo.

  • its great, but NEVER ADD A BNSF PATCH!!!!!!!

  • that is incredible

  • geeeeez.

You got it down to the last scratch!

    EXCELLENT WORK!

  • That is Amazing!!!!!! i have just recently started the hobby. I want to know if the paint and/or the dry pigment get up in the weel mechanisms and "gunk" things up. Thanks!!!!

  • Looks Great! 5 Stars!

  • I there. welcome to the greatest hobby in the worldI. I haven't had problems of that kind, but I dont spray or paint directly on the moving parts.

  • wow excellent job u do great work

  • What brand were the decal sets?

  • The Decals used on this engine are all from Microscale.

    thanks for watching

  • man i wish i could do that, im thinking of trying this but i think i sould start small, very small, i think ill test it on some of my old kit hoppers, im getting a atlas dash 8 soon CSX stealth and i want to weather it but im afraid if i mess up thats it cause well they dont make em anymore so ill be lucky to get it :S, i got a protype picture though!

  • don't weather that dash 8! If there aren't any readily availible, don't mess it up, order an old blue box engine from athearn and try that

  • if you have an engine you don't want to mess up, practice on some other engines Then do a little bit of weathering and see how it is. Better to do too little then too much. keep at it until you have it just right. Theres an article in the January 2009 model railroader that has a weathering how to on an atlas 8-40B

  • Man, I can't get over watching this video!

  • excellent work ! nothing to add

  • What brands of paint and thinnner do you use?

  • Testors paint thinner.

  • he said he uses model master light grey for the faded look.

  • Thanks, I was replying to someone elses comment.

  • You are AWESOME!!!! I wish I could send you one of my SD40-2's for a good weathering.

  • do you get paint on the gears/wheels when you do that?

  • I do get some paint on the wheels. You can remove that by wetting a piece of cloth with Airbrush thinner, lay the cloth on your tracks. switch on the power, and clean one truck at the time, by holding your engine right on the cloth, while it's "running"

    Peter

  • great work Peter!!!!! super!!!!

  • This has been the best video for showing weathering. You just dust it on and it sticks?

  • Yes, it just sticks. I keep it there with dullcoate.

  • Gravety holds the engine, just sits on the block, just make sure to hold the block level.

  • did u have any problems with the quality of the handrails like them coming apart?

  • nice vid how much was that unit?

  • Ha r u planing 2 do any more weathering videos.

  • omg that looks good

  • Peterraev I read two articles on removing factory painted lettering. One used micro sol and a pencil eraser. The other used solvaset decal setting solution and a sharpened coffee stirring stick and a Q-tip. They did warn not to rub to hard with the solvaset because it softens the paint. Just thought it may help!

  • Great Video. r u planeing 2 do any more weathering videos.

  • Very nice work Peterraev! What did you use to mask the windows? Also did you need to clean the wheels when finished? I have airbrushed equipment and find it necessary to do so!

  • I use masking film, I bet you can buy it the same place you bought your airbrush. it sticks very pourly, like post-it labels, so it can be moved around whithout sticking to hard to the surface, also easyer to remove than regular masking tape. I poor some drops of alcohol or airbrush thinner on a piece of cloth, span it over the rails, and hold the engine right over the cloth hwile the engine is running, this will clean your wheels

  • Might wanna wear rubber gloves when weathering. Keeps the finger prints down.

  • here come the heavanly chorus ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Wow! You're work is amazing and it will be a great reference for me! Thank you very much! 5/5 and favorite all your weathering videos!

  • awesome video! i'll have to try this technique once i get an airbrush and some other stuff looks really good

  • Thanks

  • Hi Me again. were do u get your decals and the yellow reflectors ive been looking but cant find any.

  • Microscale. c o m they have all sorts of decals

  • BTW, what dry pigments do you use?

  • Hi there. as I'm not familiar with the brands and names of products in the US. I can only guess. but danielsmith.c o m has dry pigments that looks just like the ones i use.

hope this is of any help.

    Peter

  • Thanks alot!!

  • Great job, I may have to try it, i have the same loco, I have a Question, were did you get that Fuel Tender, or did you make it custom.

  • Thanks. The Fueltender is from Athearn RTR.

    I just weathered it.

    Peter

  • are you going to renumber it to BNSF 8150?

  • NO, not really, I have tryed to match 9250, so why should I change the numbers ?

  • because thats the new number the engine has thanks to the stupid SD70ACS! You want to be realistic..Don't you?

  • Thank for the info, I didn't know that, I'll look into it, maby ad an update?!?

    Peter

  • okay!

  • 9255 wasnt weathered yet was it? You forgot to make the number fade, or scratch some of it out

  • Super video. Really like the camera work - he must be a pro.....

  • Du er så stiv.... hvordan går det med maven?

  • okay, men den skulle jo komme......

  • very realistic. great job.

  • KOOL!!!

  • Awesome Video!! You always have great weathering tips!!

  • very beautiful, very well done

  • Thanks, I appriciate it.
