  • Ele foi o cantor da minha juventude, juntamente com Pat Boone, Bom demais recordar. O que se cantam hoje é brincadeira. Bem: Cada tempo no seu tempo.

  • Another fabulous voice gone too soon. I was living in Europe when I discovered Matt Munro.

  • great voice , but Sinatra's is better, stop comparing they were different singers, Matt was power and tuneful, Frank was emotions and feelings x

  • have u guys heard chet baker's version? it's much more quiet and lonely, but also very good.

  • Poor arrangement of this amazing tune

  • @pointreyes6 Your comment proves it is a matter of opinion

  • Bing Crosby said Matt Monro's version of this song was '' one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard ''hard to argue with that! A pity then that despite being ranked as one of the very best by Crosby and Sinatra, Matt Monro by all accounts a warm friendly and sentimental man could not settle in America. There is no doubt that not only was Monro Britain's greatest ever singer of ballads, but he was also among the best singers of any era worldwide with album sales of over 100 million to prove it!

  • Because of Karen Carpenter, I have discovered Matt Munro! Wonderful voice and music.

Wish Karen would have had the opportunity to record this classic and many others.

  • Sings great, looks like Ricky Gervais

  • Woderful, let's not get too technical and clever - he had a singing quality which touched opur hearts, and as we've grown older I for one have realised how good he really was. Gone but not forgotten..

  • A glorious performance of a magnificent Hoagy Carmichael song. How refreshing to hear a singer like Matt Monro simply creating musical gold - without pitch enhancers, electronic trickery or anything other than a voice and a technnique touched by genius. One of the true classics.

  • Beautiful song, I love it Matt Monro.

    Thanks so much!

  • MM seemed old when I was young, think it was the brylcream and suits that were the mistake...Frank, Jack and the rest were so suave and cool...Matt looked like a pipe and slippers man so he wasn't very sexy and lets face it, he was in England competing for audience with the Beatles and the Stones to name but two of his rivals!! Bad timing which is why he probably went largely unrecognized...I could listen to him 24/7

  • @etcapel

You are so right on. The same is happening to a wonderful singer, Linda Eder. Do you know her work? She won Star Search in 1988. Those of us who know her love her voice - reminiscent of Streisand but lighter.

  • @skateitalian I don't know her but I will look her up. I am not mad about Streisand...I like more bluesey voices...I know she is one of the greats and I admire her but I don't listen to her....I was a great fan of Dionne Warwick, Dusty, Aretha and all the Burt Bacharach girls and the jazz singers..from Dorothy Dandridge to Dee Dee Bridgewater....through Peggy Lee, Billy Holiday etc. ...I am getting carried away here...night night!!

  • love it !

  • poetry put to music!

  • i would say that matt monroe&karen carpenter has the best voice in the business and it will take time to find thier replacement or maybe never.

  • This song makes me cry.

  • Great song by a great singer! It's a shame that we don't have much video footage of Matt performing.

The Ausie video in mono is a superb performance!

  • love matt....but how can you better franks version...absolute perfection in my opinion

  • What a wonderful artist....I miss him..rest in peace.

  • If you wanted to convince someone of Matt Monro's greatness, let them hear this recording. Wonderful performance, absolutely flawless.

  • Nice job! But the greatest version of this song was on Youtube over a year ago and was taken off for some reason. It was sung by Diahann Carroll and sung SUPERBLY! I never understood this song until I saw and heard her interpretation. Please, please bring it back!!! It was done sometime in the 60's on the Ed Sullivan, Gary Moore, or Jack Parr Show.

  • Personally, I think this is in the top 5 of his finest works. He sings so effortlessly and with such wonderful phrasing. Better tonal quality and control than Sinatra and almost anyone, except maybe Andy Williams.

  • This is my all-time favorite recording by Matt. Not only does he hit all the notes perfectly, but he is totally in character as he sings. He seems to "get" the song in a way that few singers do.

  • @skateitalian I've heard him called the British Sinatra, but I've always thought of Sinatra as the American Matt Monro. As you say, Monro's voice is so much better than Sinatra's, along with his control and phrasing.

  • @arpeggio1358 I would say that the "American Matt Monro" was not Sinatra, but actually Karen Carpenter. She grew up listening to her parents' Matt Monro records, her lower register was very similar to Matt's, and if you compare their recordings, you can hear that Karen learned much of her phrasing and intonation from Matt.

  • @OceanKingNY That's a very interesting observation. I had no idea that Karen Carpenter was influenced by Matt Monro. I'll go back and listen to her again. She had one of the most beautiful voices ever. Thank you for replying to my comment.

  • @OceanKingNY Okay, I listened to Carpenter on your channel and I can hear it, too.Thank you for telling me about Karen Carpenter's Matt Monro connection.

  • @OceanKingNY Never thought of this but I agree with you.

  • Very good , and very good singer , but I still like Sinatra's version (and Chet Baker's) better . Even Diana Krall , although she doesn't hold the notes .

  • To OceanKingNY

    I agree with you !00+%.

  • @87redsilver wait, what about Nina Simone's?

  • @eloisecrumpp Nina Simone doesn't do it for me , sorry . Her pitch isn't that great either

  • @87redsilver I'm thinking of the emotional content rather than her pitch. I'm coming out of the jazz side of appreciation, so some of the pop versions leave me wanting, but she catches loneliness better than most. But Chet and, yes Matt, yes.

  • @eloisecrumpp I understand where you're coming from . I'm definitely a jazz musician first - I even managed to play piano with Chet a couple of times in Italy . But lately I have been practising voice with a classical teacher and I listen to a lot of Andrea Bocelli which makes me listen in a more technical - beautiful sound - type of way . But all these are great artists anyway . Matt is more like Sinatra, whom I always liked , mostly in his middle period .

  • Can you please upload songs of Matt Monro "Why Not Now, Beyond The Hill, Once In Every Long And Lonely While". Thank you so much.

  • beautiful song sung by one of the all time greats 10 out of 10

  • Anyone's version would be better than Sinatra's imho.

  • oh , a Sinatra hater ...pretty rare , because at least for Sinatra , most people are RIGHT and you're wrong .

  • margi09...I have to say that I've heard the same thing........That is that "Bing Crosby" thought that Matt's interpretation of this was the most beautiful song that he'd ever heard....Steve

  • You ought to hear Franklyn MacCormick's incredibly moving spoken word version of "IGet Along Without You Very Well" with orchestral backup. It's on his 1958 Liberty album "The Torch is Still Burning." It is the ULTIMATE recording of this classic song of love lost but never forgotten. Right, Gayle?

  • I know this song because it featured on Carly Simon's "Torch" album....nobody does it better ;) but I love Matt ...

  • This was without doubt Matt's song and the ending is really well phrased, I had the pleasure of knowing Matt and even helping him out as an audience stooge on one show, I still have the two photos he signed for me in the dressing room later. I subsequently learned a lot by listening to both Matt and also the great Sinatra, and feel I have learned much about phrasing. Both of these greats can

    never be replaced.

  • Matt Monro - a singer's singer. Like Jack Jones. Wonderful interpretation of a gorgeous song.

  • I love Matt Monroe, one of the greatest singers ever. Thanks for video,it's great!

  • Thanks for this post, not only was it a great musical selection but, your graphics quite fitting.

I just posted Matt's "Nina Never Knew" ,one of my favorites.

  • matt sounds great on this one

    very underated singer

  • I guess I'm the heretic - I love Jack Jones' bossa nova version best. It's such a sunny rendition, and Jack's whole She Loves Me album has so much personality. But I do like the Monro and Sinatra versions a lot too.

  • shiffers everytime I listen to this.... this is the story of my life

  • I forgot to mention a book that came with one of Matt's cds that I have said that Bing Crosby was absolutely blown away when he heard Matt's version of this song. Bing Crosby thought it was the best version he ever heard.

  • I've also heard Frank Sinatra rendition of this song,I must say I think Matts version is better. Sinatra has a wonderful voice also,in fact Matts voice is just as wonderful if not better in some songs. I love them both as performers.

  • This very ballad by the inimitable Matt Monro is why he's one of my five favorite (male) ballad singers. Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks, OceanKing, for posting this wonderful song, sung so beautifully by Matt Monro; his voice was so rich, smooth and full of feeling. I appriciate your commentary and the thoughtful way you put it all together, with voice, pictures and the vidio.

  • The story is that Matt Monro was one of Sinatra's favourite singers (bought all his records, and so on). Why is nobody surprised?

  • monro puts more power behind this song than frank, but i still like frank's better

  • I know what you mean. Frank's version will always be a pop culture classic, coming from the legendary "In the Wee Small Hours..." album. He captured the emotion of the song perfectly.

But Matt made the song his own, too -- no small feat, considering the competition. His version is much more than a routine cover.

I think that some young people hearing both versions for the first time today might think that Matt's version came first.

  • Peggy Lee also, in fact, her rendition was the only one I knew till now. Thank you for sharing your music with another "oldie". Regards from Sydney, Australia.

  • Hi! I am a BIG fan of The Carpenters, Matt and Frank Sinatra. I love both Matt and Frank singing this song, but to have heard Karen singing it would have been amazing!

  • Yes. Karen, like Matt, had a deep, rich voice which had a built-in melancholy quality. This song would have been perfect for her.

Linda Ronstadt recorded it on one of her Nelson Riddle albums, and her version is pretty good, too (but nowhere near as good as Matt's).

  • Thanks for posting, I read somewhere that Richard said that Matt was Karen's favourite singer and Richard took her this song on cassette while she was in hospital.

She rang afterwards and thanked him for it as she hadn't heard Matt's version before.

  • Yes, you're correct. She even told Richard that she would like to record the song herself. But she was gone a few months later, so that never happened....

  • Thanks for posting this classic. I have made comments on other versions of this song on you tube advising the performers to check out Matt's version, now they can do it easily.

Still in my opinion the best version, would've been good to hear Karen singing it!

  • You're welcome. I agree that this is one of Matt's finest performances, and this is definitely the best version of this song that I've ever heard. Aspiring singers can learn a lot by listening to Matt's technique.

We can only imagine how fine Karen Carpenter's version might have sounded.
