  • Im sent from the future to confirm the rumors about John's leaving...

  • nope not first

  • Loving the subway to venus

  • Ak hahaha

  • whoa...so early, john's on an ibanez!!!??? this is awesome, it kind of shows the rocky relationship starting between anthony and john in the first part too

  • @619mikeg Actually not too long after this they became best friends. It was only until later in their relationship like around the recording of Blood Sugar when they stopped talking bc Anthony used to bust his balls alot and they use to clash on feelings of popularity and record selling. Anthony actually wrote under the bridge bc him and John werent talking that much bc John and Flea became real close. John use to be Ants boy his partner hence.. Sometimes i feel like i dont have a partner/John..

  • @bmillerdrums didn't know that, thanks for the info!

  • @bmillerdrums Wrong, Under the Bridge was written before John and Anthony relationship became strained. /watch?v=_vV4r4Fy9hQ

  • 4:48 - SUBWAY TO VENUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i love john's punky hair!.....but it looks nicer in that time... ;)

Funky as shit....! the basss humping our face!

Anthony crazy shit on ladders! lmao he stops the band to ask what song lol

    police helicopter oh yea!!!!! :)

  • anthony almost shot the sky!!

  • is that an early version of subway to venus i hear?

  • not very good quality but legendary video

  • why is flea wearing a diaper and wtf is that haircut john??

  • @bluestratgirl you obviously dont know much about the peppers lol. plus this was in the 80's ffs. shit was funky

  • @SweetKooshy i no lol i was just commenting on the oddness of it XD but at least thats not as bad as the whole sox on cox thing lolol

  • @bluestratgirl ohhh, i gotcha. yeah SOC was badass lol.

  • Thank you so much for posting this video! I was at this show. The evening was magical! It was super charged. Afer the loss of Hillel, many of us thought we might never see the Peppers play again. I had chills the whole evening! If I remember correctly, Thelonius Monster opened for them that night....anyone?

  • Hay i just noticed, the last jam when anthony is going downstairs sounds a lot like Subway to venus

  • do you have more footage?

  • this October 9th, 1988 - Columbus, OH - Octoke Gym

and john's first Show was September 17th, 1988 not the Octoke Gym

  • this video's amazing! great job finding this footage the song before police helicopter is green heaven.

  • LOL "hold on guys im comin down this is fuckin ridiculous"

  • I got to go backstage after the Bronco Bowl show. Flea bummed a smoke from my friend and Anthony was super nice while he signed my tshirt. I was 18 at the time and Mothers Milk was just blowin up. Wow..seems like eons ago.

  • john's leaving has been confirmed. He has officially left the band. He has posted on his own myspace blog and website. It says he quit over a year ago actually.

  • hopefully its just a rumor. id be mad fucking depressed if john left and/or decided to not release any solo work at all.

  • @emasame oh my gosh. i would DIE. D;

    I LOVE HIM.

  • he officially left the band.

  • he said he left the chili peppers to work alot more on his solo stuff

  • where was this performance? thanks :) good video (Y)

  • john may be quitting the band (again).

  • Details?

  • sent you a message with info, apparently i can't post website links on here. thanks

  • thanks for that info...

  • awesome post, hate to sound like a wanker but... nuff said

  • Hahaha. They just wanted to keep jammin'. =P

  • dude johns ibanez sounds soooo bad im so happy he switched over to strats

  • @FunkyMonks217 i think thats a kramer

  • @dpgiaca97 no doubt definitely looks like a kramer wth that banana headstock :)

  • @FunkyMonks217 pretty sure thats a Kramer.

  • John actually played his first show with them, and with DH on drums, a little earlier at an all-ages show at a bar in Tempe, AZ. I knew them so they let me do a video interview with them before the show for an audition tape for MTV. (An out-take ran for months on MTV.) TSOL with Joe Wood opened the show. I have them on tape talking about it being John's 1st gig with them and saying that he was only 17yrs old at the time. I promise to post as soon as I get it converted from VHS to DVD, LOL!

  • dude i really wanna hear this/see this

  • I remember that show, it was a secret show, this one here was John's first in Los Angeles to their fan base where it all started type of thing, and he was introduced here by Anthony earlier in this video (which I did not post) we'd love to get to see what you have from Tempe, AZ, post it when you got it.

  • jesus, start the video already.

  • bitchin funk fuckin rocks!

  • what ever happend to DH Peligro ?

  • DH was fired soon after this tour because of his drinking problem which made them sound bad, after being fired he quit the drink and got himself in shape again. later anthony became of his sobriety, and from what i know now DH is doing quite well

  • after he was fired and descended much further into drug addiction and years later anthony helped him.

  • We were all really pissed about that, the Dead Kennedy's element with the Red Hot Chili Peppers after Jack Irons left was "only perfect" Chad is a great drummer but the Chili Peppers would have recorded a completely different sound with DH, they may have stayed closer to a more funk/punk element all the way up until now. They kind of went pop on us...

  • right you are man.

  • they sure didn't went pop cause of chad, more cause of john.

chad always was like fast man i need to be faster than flea. You can hear that a lot on mother's milk. but then when john started writing on his own, he came up with much more melodic work like under the bridge or i could have lied. the guitar part was the first thing written so the others had to adapt their parts to it, and obviously you can't drum on under the bridge like you'd usually do on magic johnson.

  • @grungeera i thought anthony wrote under the bridge, and came up with the melody

  • anthony came up with the lyrics, but didn't want them to be published until Rubin read them and was like 'wow you have to do this' and then anthony sat down with john and came up with a melody to which john added quite a bit.

  • i agree with john taking them to pop but your wrong about the guitar in under the bridge being written first it was the lyrics surprisingly....its in scar tissue

  • true and i think that chad smith is along with Jack Irons like the perfect drummer behind Flea

  • @raw420x nahh john and flea turned into that.

  • fuck

  • I thought AK wants them to play ''Get up and Jum'' :D

  • I thought AK 47.

  • anthony looks like a wrestler)))

  • awesome jam in the beginning!

  • great post. This band inspires me to play original music and leave the imitation and emulation to those who can't be original. I'm glad they can inspire generations to come... I sound like an oldy, just turned 22 ahahah.

  • Thanks a lot for this stuff and the other videos on your channel. This is really apreciated!

  • This was a big Industry Show, everyone from EMI was there to see this new guitarist named John Frusciante, He was filling some big shoes (Hillel Slovak). This was there first public performance after Hillel passed back in June of that same year.

  • its hard to believe the swan wasnt getting high. he fuckin climbed a 50 foot lader to play a 1 and a half minute song. lol

  • Comment removed

  • "this is fucking rediculous"

  • cool! anyone notice that the outro jam was actually the start of the unreleased 'Subway to Venus' from Mothers Milk

  • yeah, sounds like a precursor to it, definitely!

  • Hahaha U GUYS TRYIN TO MAKE ME LOOK LIKE A FOOL OR SUMTHING? and hes on a 50 foot ladder haha. great stuff thnks for the upload man [8-]

  • I was actually at this show and an aquaintence of Flea's those years ago. I was in the balcony on the side of the stage. I remember they came out in costumes. Flea was Superman. I think DH was a bumblebee. I can't who else was what.

  • That is so awesome, there is a second camera angle to this show, I was the the hand held camera, I was here there and everywhere , I kept getting pushed around. The second angle I cannot acquire as the owner of the footage is non cooperative. It's so great to hear from someone who was there at this same event, I feel like I'm sharing it with a new generation or something!

  • tony was sober

    i hate johns hair

    d.h is the man

flea is the greatest most beautifullest creature to walk the earth

  • Wow...you actually referred to Anthony as Tony?? Not many people do that.

  • antoine the swan? l0l this is when he was still cool

  • EXCELLENT! Thanks so much for posting this! It was as if there was a police helicopter up there with it's searchlight on him LOL! Oooh and did anyone notice Ant's shadow when he was coming down the ladder? Didn't it look like Quasimodo from the hunchback of notre dame climbing down a bell tower??? Looool :P

  • Awesome post, I've noticed his shadow when I shot the footage in 1988, but I've never thought of it the way you just did in your post. Thank you, you are an Angel......

  • Explosion!!!!!!! AHUAHUHAU

  • Johns first show and they already had the intro to "Subway to Venus" down perfect.

  • They just made it up that night during the time i turned on my camera. It blew my mind when mothers milk came out. I was like ; 'wow" they made a full song out of the jam they did at the Anson Ford Theater. it was really cool.

  • I love this BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what dvd is this?

  • Green Heaven introduction the greatest from the RHCP fisrt album

  • aasdf

  • These two guys were just meant to play together...

  • is chad smith here to or is it just john's

    first performance

  • read the description

  • my bad

  • This was Johns debut with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, DH Peligro drummer of the Dead Kennedys is on drums in this clip.

DH was perfect for this band, and many thought at the time when DH left that the band wouldn't go any further in their career , then they got Chad in Jan of 1989.

  • Oh wow , terribly sorry , i didnt read it right , my bad . I think thats the second time of me doing that hahaha , sorry

  • That wasnt there first performance , first was they performed out in L.A and they were with Hillel so actually you are wrong ...

  • it's called "John Frusciante's first performance"

dont know if its true though

  • This in fact was John Frusciante's first performance with the group. I worked for the band and their manager Lindy Goetz at the time. I was told to be there for this show with my video camera by their manager as the band had a "new" guitarist they were gonna introduce, his name was John Frusciante and the rest is history.

  • anyone think anthony was high here?

    No pun intended lol

  • In 1988? I don't think he was ever sober.

  • ha how did the mic cable go that far! I wish Flea and JF jammed in the funky style they used to, i mean its good now but would be great for them to go back to sounding like this sometimes. Also, i know you made this video to be artistic and old-looking but can you do a clearer version as well?

  • it was an old school "wireless" mic, you can see the cable at the end only goes for about a foot or so from the end of the mic and stops.

  • I'm from Spain and I love Red Hot Chili Peppers funk - rock music.

    They are the best!

  • I'm from Spain, and I love Red Hot Chili Peppers' funk - rock music and this old performance has showed me that kind of traditional improvitations they did about 20 years ago.

Actually, Anthony, John. Flea and DH, are really fantastic, especially John with his first preformance with The Red HOt Chili Peppers.

I think the last solo was "Subway To Venus", wasn't it? But I don't know because that song was brought out a year later with "Mothers Milk."

    ¿?

  • awesome piece of history!

tnx so much for sharin it =)

  • This is eppic!! Im amazed :P

  • lol is this guy just recording this off his tv??

  • I produced and directed this in 1988 for John Frusciante, and Lindy Goetz.

I dumbed it down by playing my master off of my monitor and right into my computer. It's an old Hollywood technique. In olden times we'd play the film reel on the projector on to a wall and videotape the wall.... it's an easy transfer procedure, and you dumb the quality down, and give it that old worn out look that studios pay millions to duplicate. You can do it for nothing.

  • why would you want to do that its just more unclear and it doesn't look like you were actually there....and i doubt studios pay millions for that lol they obviously have better ways of making it look good then video taping their tv

  • The master looks perfect. It's a creative technique, I wanted it to look old like you are watching it on an old television tube like from the 1950's... Everyone can make it look good that's easy. The fun part is how to make it look old. It's artistic.

  • oh...i dont know, i was thinking that people probably wont believe you were actually there and actually recorded it for john cuz it just looks like its recorded off the tv

  • "im cumin down this is freakin rediculous" lol no shit sherlock!

  • Police helicopter.. Crazy song :P

  • Ill!

  • THE FRUSH!!

  • this rules

  • at the end (bout 4:50) theyre playin something what sounds like subway to venus

  • that's defintely subway to venus!

  • This was the night that they invented the riff for Subway to Venus. They often did this live. They would have a creative spurt several times when I filmed them. I was amazed to hear this as Subway, later on with Mothers Milk. I'd think wow this is the song they played live on my video when I recorded them in 1988, now it's a complete song on the new album, at the time. It was great to experience this.

  • yeh they wrote that song based on that jam....

  • isso sim era RHCP & funk metal! =]

  • man holy shit john was young, does anyone know what kind of guitar he was playing?

  • looks like some sort of ibanez rg

  • performance maybe. shape doesnt look like an rg. although he did have an orange rg 560 or 760

  • Ibanez RG 250 DX

  • It's a Kramer

  • Hey how come AK didnt mention this in scar tissue?

  • i dunno. i read scar tissue too.. maybe this kind of craziness was actually within the norm.

  • haha, yeah blatently...

  • But that's why hes our singer, coz he keeps form.

  • Lol. Anthony's like the singer in my band. We're tryin to jam, and he's like 'play the next song'

  • bit like paul williamson then

  • so fucking stoned rofl

  • its like, they cant do music like they used to when theyre not high like they used to... which is a kinda sad paradox

  • i wish the peppers still made the funk they used to

  • me too!

  • man, I wish I was there

that would have been so cool

    *dreams*

  • Fuckin Anthony Kiedis rules.

  • i totally agree with billythebumblebee. thats exactly what i thought when i heard it too.

  • that's true but if you listen well you'll notice that he's playing the album version not the demo which had a diferent intro... duhh

  • I was at this show. Isn't that DH peligro of Dead Kennedy's fame playing drums?

  • yeah

  • police helicopter flying in the skyyy!!!

  • Anthony is a fucking lunatic. Awesome.

  • 3.05 sounds exactly like rage against the machine

  • Wow, no kidding, Rage didn't come together until 1990, I used to skate with Zak and Tony Hawk in 1981 at Whittiers skatecity

  • really?

  • hey guys was"the red hot chili peppers" their first album or was "out in l.a"

  • Out in L.A. was their first song, as a joke band , as I was once told by Flea.

  • hey guys!hey guys! what's the next song?ahahah wonderful Kiedis!

  • damn. raw as hell.

    chili peppers at their best.

Kiedis must be high on tons of shit.

he's so lucky to have survived his addiction.

  • WERE lucky he survived it.

  • raw

  • wow flea hasnt changed at all ha ha! awesome vid thanks

  • i wish they would of showed the jam and not him climbing

  • john with long hair in the back of his head and playing Ibanez guitar-

  • i can't see anything!!!

  • were your eyes open? i see a video...

  • and also i really can't hear anything ¬¬

  • that was his first performance with them?

    it was really good!

  • is that all u have to talk about is his addiction?!

  • whahahahahhahahaaha <3

  • 3:05-3:07, i heard the tom morello in him

  • ha. so true..

  • that was not any tom morello style.. it's green heaven by jack sherman and the peppers in their first record...

  • suprisingly, not every piece of music heard by the Red Hot Chili Peppers is an actual song. Look up "jams" on google and you'll get a definintion. Back in the 80s everyone was doing it. They were also all wearing bandanas and eating cereal.

  • hey! I still eat cereal! U got a problem with that?!? ;)

long live rhcp and their nowadays standardized and scheduled bluesfunkjams in E that always lead right into can't stop :D

  • Can someone tell me what they are playing from 2:02 - 2:27?

    sounds cool (:

  • im not sure what they are playing from 2:02 to 2:27, i think it was jam, unfortunately

  • that's salute to kareem... it was later released as a demo in their mother's milk remastered version

  • man i feel the early chemistry of flea and john. every second they got they were jammin! HAHA, its good too!

  • The new stuff is ok, i like to sing along and all that..but come on people RHCP is all about oldies like GET UP+JUMP!

  • the new stuff is different but it's kickass too

  • Go fucking die in a fire if you think there early stuff was shit faggo!
