"Hollywood A-Go-Go" had a very distinctive "look" in black & white - very contrasty, often dark. The set was very basic and you saw the lights and other equipment up against the ceiling. I can clearly remember what it looked like on TV when it was new, as it does here.
Does anyone know what has happened to June Fairchild? My wife is her Niece and really wants to talk to her about her father who passed away when my wife was 2 yrs old. I guess June was one of the regular dancers on this show! Any help would be appreciated!!!
Sam Riddle became the producer of Star Search, Supermodel of The World, The Lou Rawls Parade of Stars. He was also a writer for Solid Gold. Great guy. Great friend.
When the series was syndicated in 1965-'66, the original videotapes were also transferred to 16mm "kinescope" film for those stations that didn't have videotape equipment...and that's why the show exists today. The original tapes were "wiped", after the show ended. WPIX in New York aired the videotaped edition...
Hi...It was called Ninth Street West...in L.A. anyway. Sam Riddle was the host. All these shows were so much fun! And, I loved Lloyd Thaxton's show, too. The kids from local schools danced on his program. I remember the surfer era was really big then!
You bet ya, I was lucky enough to dance on Sam's show one day when the Standell's were on, my favorite band of the day. I hope this day finds Sam in good health, just seeing his face made my day.
Throughout its 1965-66, 52-episode run, "Hollywood a Go Go" was aired in New York on WPIX (Channel 11). Originally, "HaGG" was on Mondays at 7:30 PM, then in the fall of 1965 was moved to Fridays at 8:30 PM. (After that fall, WPIX also had Lloyd Thaxton's show on their schedule.)
I seemed to recall reading that "Hollywood a Go Go" was derived from a local show Mr. Riddle hosted in 1964-65 on KHJ-TV (now KCAL) called "Ninth Street a Go Go."
Love it! I hope eventually the clip of Booker T and the MGs performing Green Onions on Hollywood A Go Go can be put back on Youtube. That clip is wonderful.
As recently as 2005 Riddle was working as a television producer, executive producer, and announcer. He has, or had, his own production company, Sam Riddle Productions.
Most of the shows were "live on tape". The show would run as it was to be aired, be recorded on 2" quad, then aired from the tapes. If a "big" guest was booked they would tape several songs and roll them into the next few shows.
Besides the music acts the other stars of this show were the fantastic GAZZARRI DANCERS.
Oddly they don't look dated after all these years, maybe because of their great choreography and boundless energy. Some of us guys would watch the show just to see them. It would be great to get some comments from any former GAZZARRI's that are out there. You girls were great!
"Some of us guys would watch the show just to see them."
Only SOME? Well, except the ones that were gay, maybe. Those Gazzarri's dancers must have been the object of many a teenage boy's fantasies. And their dads' fantasies too! Definitely the best-looking and most talented go-go girls on TV back then.
@haworthhoarder I'll say! Hey if you happen to know if any of these dancers are still teaching their steps to any youn'uns lemme know; I'm seeking out dancers who can perform just like these Gazzarri gals. I have a 60s tribute band and our shows are gonna llok just like this tv show & Shindig & Hullabaloo combined. We got everything but the dancers - HELP!!
The song is a generic "Theme from Hollywood a Go Go" as performed by The Sinners, the house band at Gizarri's Sunset Strip at the time. The band was also featured on each Hollywood a Go Go program.

@fromthesidelines Glad we have what we have though. Sadly, lots of old game shows from the 60's and 70's were wiped, never to be seen again.

Didn't Sam Riddle also host Ninth Street West back in 1965? I was on that show when Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs played Wolly Bully. Such fun!

NO wonder why teenagers were so skinny back then if that's how fast dancing was in the 60s.
