i would wager that instead of being cool calm and collected as you would say, you were in fact in shock. Any big injury like that would not be one where having pain would stop it, so your body doesnt really register it, instead sends you into 'protect' mode. All id say is that a large proportion of people can supposedly keep a level head in such serious situations becasue thier bodies go into that shock mode.
