  • Darn you, Kripke!

  • So who else muted the sound after the first 2 seconds?

  • Pretty cool that they got Adam Sandler to provide commentary for this episode

  • @Shahamu Maybe Homestar Runner?

  • Why is Homestar Runner commentating on this? He should be in my flash cartoons, dammit!

  • @HoneyBearBanjo Well I'm glad *someone* said it!

  • Hey, not that bad.

  • Why do you talk like a baby?

  • Your voice is so cute

  • SHUM ENCHANTED EBENINNNGGGG

  • 3:57-4:06 Best dance ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

  • This is not the 'official commentary', it's a fan made commentary. The official one has Al Jean and Matt and everyone.

  • Quick question but do you have Asperger's?

  • DIED BAERT

  • HOMESTAR! :D

  • Has anyone ever told you you sound JUST like Neil Goldman from Family Guy? lol

  • You vastly underplayed how much of this was used. I estimate more than half. You also left out the best piece of animation in the whole episode, and nearly the best in Simpsons history: Botz' lecture to Bart about the why he should do exactly what she tells him to. From a historical perspective, using the original footage might have been an enormous loss, since David Silverman's handling of this one, great or not, strengthened his relationship with the studio and the execs.....

  • @narozzz ....allowing him enormous creative freedom in his direction and animation (and, just as often, uncredited layouts) on such classics as "Homer's Triple Bypass", "Treehouse of Horror IV-V" and "The Mysterious Voyage of Homer", which probably contains the most experimental animation ever done for television, exceeding even much of Ren and Stimpy in terms of sheer audacity and antipathy towards the standard production system for modern TV animation.

  • @narozzz - For the record, the aformentioned Botz animation was part of the original footage, but it's inclusion in the final cut of the episode demonstates both the exec's and the production unit's ability to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to "lively" animation - As does their decision to re-do the dance sequence, which is both better laid out and more fun (in a non-oh-dear-god-I-feel-sick way) than the original.

  • I guess this is what it would've been like if Kennedy Cartoons animated the Simpsons! Matt Groening would've fired them on the spot!

  • All I have to say is "wow"

this show has realy came a LONG way....

Notice how bart reached right over the bowel of cereal?

  • I think whether or not a cartoon should look "cartoony" as the commentator stated comes down to personal preferrence. Some people enjoy cartoons with exaggerated and expressive animation, where as other people want to see cartoons animated in a more natural fashion.

I prefer the natural approach, at least for a show like the Simpsons. The early incarnation of the Simpsons is too crude and wacky looking for me to enjoy, but that's just my personal opinion.

  • @shelton705

What exactly is "natural" about a series with yellow cartoon characters?

Animation isn't life action. It can never be as subtle as watching real people interact with each other. That's why the "natural" approach leads to stiffness, exactly what the animation in the Simpsons episodes has become over the years, something I would describe as "crude". This episode has lots of drawing, and is visually way more complex than any modern episode. It takes advantage of the animated medium.

  • Jeez, this is what the big hubbub was about? From what I had read about it before I'd figured that the animation would be really cheap and Hanna-Barbara looking. On the contrary, it looks great! Why does every cartoon insist on looking stiff and lifeless? What's wrong with having fluid, expressive animation? (I swear, 'Clutch Cargo' had more expressive character animation than Family Guy does.)

  • I agree with you there, besides the off model characters everything looks great and full of energy. It's been a long time since a cartoon had animation with this energy.

  • @akumacornflakes You really cant figure out what's wrong with it? wow

  • @akumacornflakes

family guy used to have pretty good animation when the show wasn't about gay sex jokes and pointless violence (which is funny since that's what the theme song made fun of.)

  • @akumacornflakes The Simpsons was trying to pioneer a more realistic look. Today we've gotten used to the idea of cartoons having the more solid look of Simpsons as it wound up being incredibly influential. At the time, though, what Simpsons was trying to do had essentially never been done before. It's sort of like how Samurai Jack looks cliche now, but that's only because it invented that look.

  • @akumacornflakes You may say that every cartoon looks stiff and lifeless, but remember that 21 years ago, the Simpsons was GROUNDBREAKING in its animation. Every cartoon looks like that because of the Simpsons.

  • @akumacornflakes Because it was shit.

  • @akumacornflakes I honestly can't believe this is considered bad. the Tracy Ullman episodes? yeah, those were expressive but technically poorly drawn & animated. this? it looks great!

  • @akumacornflakes they look all stiff and shit to cutt down on labor.when they animate like this,it looks awsome, but takes to fucking long to animate.when its stiff, its cheaper and takes less time to produce.i think that this animation is realy good.also, they fucked it up even more because this show is for teens to young adults, and they dont like cartoony animation.witch is bullshit

  • Well, the new animation had that wall eye Homer at the beginning, and some of the original animation stayed (you can tell by the fluidity of it and the backgrounds), so it's not a total loss. Besides, the Marge's fantasy moment and the Bart and Lisa screaming scene was much better in the final version.

And don't blame the Hollywood guys on this, blame the writers and Matt Groening!
