  • weller could sing the phone book and still make it sound good

  • Love Paul, but this looks like it was filmed at the wankers ball!

  • Every time I see an 80's movie and they play this I just love it because it so reminds me of my youth but I never knew who sings the song until know. I love the chorus, great song.

  • Weller has matured as a man and a Musician, Be ridiculous to hear him sing in the angry youthful voice back from 1982. The lyrics haven't travelled so well but he can still pull it off by virtue of the fact that his voice has grown.

  • What kind of twat party was that at?

  • Oh ..bluebird of youth!!

  • some right cocks making comments on here.

  • Paul Weller could make anything look cool.

  • i love Weller to death but fuck sake Paul...sing it in ya proper accent mate!!

  • @WimpyV3 dunno where your'e comin from with that fella??...

  • @theaceface no i dont either :S

  • @theaceface I can see where he's coming from. There's a yank twang in the vocals here.

  • @WimpyV3 Thats just how he sings now, his accent has changed as he's got older.

  • @WimpyV3 I think he's just trying to be soulful, 60s Motown style. The great Paul Weller could sing in a Russian accent, and he'd still sound great!!!

  • @WimpyV3 serious?this is a great version!

  • 1.21 nice

  • American Accent!

  • fuck me fellas. if this dont make your blood run through your veins get the fuck out of this life ..weller pure class

  • He's the bollox. Always was. Probably always will be. Dunno about the audience tho, bunch of wombles in there :-)

  • Not impressed at the dancing at 0:36 LOL

  • HOOVERCAThave you looked in the mirror, none of us are getting younger, but we can still get the vibes when we wake up,you get 2 a GP

  • Weller is starting to look like Jimmy Savile.....pack it in now son,you really don't want to end up one of the Rolling Stones.

  • one of the best artists ever ! Love him, he is still alive and kicking.

  • Fuckin Aye !!!!!!!

  • say what you want but weller is atleast still relevant- lydons a joke strummers dead- mick jones hasnt written a decent song in ages- costello is doing bacharach and americana- this version of malice has great feel and energy for a guy who at the time was nearly 50 when this was filmed- the jam is dead long live weller!!!

  • Don't like his voice now....the youth is gone and so is the accent. Now I'm sad.

  • Why do all the old punkers turn into bleach-blonde parodies of themselves and start displaying crucifixes on the necks. Did god make the Jam great? Good thing he has all those nice photos if him back in the days when he still had the mojo. Maybe PW should do a stint in Creed to freshen up on his theology

  • @theekrusher

WOTS YOUR PROBLEM, ARE YOU JEALOUS OF THE MAN, ARE YOU DOING AS WELL IN YOUR LIFE AS HE IS IN HIS?

  • The truth always strikes a nerve doesn't it?

  • Comment removed

  • Is it me or is he starting to remind you of Rod Stewart, when he got really really old?

  • @Taker1116 i can see it now

  • One of my goals before i die is to see P.W live. Come back to the States man.

  • wow..ii's good

  • It sounds good with his older tone of voice but his accent isn't the same - he sounds so american here.

  • If you like modern day chart crap....switch off now......Cos this'll blow your F****** head off!! :O)

  • The crowd is fucking shite. They've got a legend like Weller up there doing one of the best songs ever, and they look like they're at a Phil Collins gig- what the fuck's all that about? They did the same when Oasis performed there, pathetic.

  • @geflad The crowd is shight.....but it will always be the case. Sad really!! But he'll last longer then the fucking crowd who are clueless!!

  • does this song have staying power or what?

  • fucking awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! greetings from the middle east!!!

  • ooooohhhh fook. seeing him on thursday aty Hyde Park

  • 1:20 TITTSSSS !!!!

  • 1.59 Fire n Skill

  • Weller's god!

  • you'd rather remember it the way it was. but 25 years after the original video he looks pretty good.

  • what a major load of wank........and i love Jam/Style Council........are peoiple really this fucking facile/dumb?..yep, I guess so in a town called sadarse

  • IM VERY VERY SURE THEY ARE WELL AWARE OF THIS SONG MY FRIEND IVE BEEN ALL OVER THE WORLD AND BELIEVE ME .IT HAS THE SAME RESPONSE

  • I hate the crowd at the brits awards, just awful people most of them get free tickets

  • what the hell is up with that guitarist (not Paul)! it just sounds wrong with all of that guitar strumming

  • The Modfather. The coolest ever. Wish he sang in his usual accent...oh well.

  • must have been strange to sing that song in front of those coked up privately educated tossers, just glad the camera caught the real fan on the balcony, that song was for you...

  • You'd think after two verses or so Paul would realize no one was going to sing along very robustly. :p No but, he sounds really good here and the band's top notch. :)

  • @artdrtr2 Tits!!

  • I'm sorry I love the jam and Paul weller, but what is he playing at here putting on some cheesy voice, this song is made by his strong cockney accent but here he just sounds like a twat.

  • pmsl @ motown???? WHAT!!!!! hahahahahaha

  • 1:20

  • one word. legend.

  • lOVE THIS

  • BRILL

  • BTRILL

  • Great video! I'm missing the early 80's!

  • I want The Jam.

  • Stop argueing you people and just enjoy the bloody music !!!!

  • This performance is better than any live version The Jam did. Paul became better live with age.

  • That was dame kelly holmes not dc lee......

  • hahahaha lol

    let them enjoy the moment...

  • Why is everyone slating him? This was a fantastic performance and Paul Weller is as good as he was in The Jam.

  • so much energy his voice may have changed but it still has that organized fury

  • Good to see D C Lee dancing along to this

  • I doubt most of those shiny, happy Pop Idol wannabes in the audience have any idea who Paul Weller is, or what this song is about.

  • You may be right; either ways, they were lucky to see a live Paul Weller performance...

  • @bunniesonprozac I get what this song is about. It's a homage to MOTOWN. What do you say to that Brit?

  • @mvonwahlde I'd say you're probably one of the 80% of Americans who doesn't own a passport.

  • @bunniesonprozac Don't you see the Motown influence. It is really, really strong.

You can't hurry love, you just have to wait . . . .

You're too hard on me. I don't think that Mr. Weller would say that the song is "about" any ONE thing. That's why he's such a good artist.

Disaffected youth. Big wow. Really novel theme.

The song lasts because it's great pop juxtaposed with social comment.

  • @mvonwahlde chill mate, it's Paul Weller, nuff said

  • @mvonwahlde juxtafukinwhat?

  • Maybe the happy Pop Idol wannabes know better than you that he's a former Jam and the song talk about his hometown...

  • @bunniesonprozac

What do you think !!! They are Brits !!!!

Even the black people know the lyrics, are you a stupid american or what !!!

Even the mom's and the grand kids of those moms know that !

  • @bunniesonprozac Playing the 45's in your bedroom, i hated magret thatcher at 16 i didint know why then but i had the jam

  • I think his voice sounds great, just more mature. don't like the blonde hair but he's a legend so he can do whatever the fuck he wants!

  • but one must give him credit,

because noone could have shown such a creepy "style-council", fred perry -fashion-oriented, all in all completely jerkish attitude,

    and get away with it!

with fresh ironed sweater around the shoulders, singing "homebreakers" and stuff like that!!

only weller could manage that without looking like a complete asshole))

  • i hate his new voice, hes lost his raw accent that used to give a more punky meaningful feeling to the song.

  • tell me has paul weller become a living legend or his own caricature?

or both? )) no offence, dear fans

  • ROFL

    Rod Stewart's ugly brother!

  • Awful hairdo! What a charming and stylish man he was in his younger days!

  • killer....

  • fukin brilliant his voice is even better its matured

  • sounds just as good without them no disrespect though

  • not quite the same without Buckler and Foxton..

  • @afcoverlandandsea

    No Shit Sherlock.

  • @afcoverlandandsea saying that, from the jam are wank

  • i remember watching this on the telly.... what great entertainment... & i wasn't even born when this song was made.

  • QUE GRAN ROLA !!

  • a song that's creepily relevant in 2009 as it was back in 1982.

  • this sounds like a casserole the jam were a curry

  • @msangh2003

And you sound like a twat !!

  • he still rocks !

  • just doesnt sound the same without bruce !!

  • Really, sound better in 80's with The Jam, but Time is eternal for this song

  • legend....im off to see the modfathers on the 13th of november at the duke in telford.

  • pity is that foxton and buckler were not there, they was part of his career.a well deserved award to a man has contributed a lot to the music business.

  • i don't think he'd ever play with them, then again have him on stage along...with his band out of his sight...hmmm idea but would never work, my great regret i'll never see them play

  • I agree with Hennersbass. He's kinda bastardised his own song. Good, but it definately had more punch in it's day, the way he used to sing it.

  • fuckin' great song! but I hate when Weller stops to sing

  • It doesnt really suit the song how he sings it now, the way he used to pronounce some of the words in that little cockney way just made the song.

  • the absolute dogs bits.

  • Saw him last night at Dalby Forrest!!

    Absolute Legend!!!

  • Was ist das denn für ein hinkender Vergleich?..hä...Das Lied ist 30 Jahre alt und er singt es besser denn je. Es ist heute genauso aktuell wie damals. Dagegen sind Oasis Rotzlöffel.

  • weller is unreal but oasis are the boys

  • 1:10, is that carl barat? haha. it looks like him.

  • weller in his early days, looks like carl though.

  • Lol! yea

  • saw him a couple of weeks back at thetford he was amazing best gig i've been to

  • Weller really makes that Telecaster roar!

  • There isn't really such thing as 'Mod' music, they listened to Motown, Ska etc they maybe even liked a bit of Elvis? You never know, Mod was a fashion sense and for some like Jimmy out of Quadrophenia a way of life. Weller kept Mod alive and it's about fuckin time Mod got sparked up again because wearin my parka and appreciatin the past is an awsome feeling!

  • what a fucking hero

  • ok stop the arguing , wellers the modfather and marriott is the grandmodfather....ok

  • fucking love this man

  • the mans a fucking god

  • Lets get it right, why disagree about sillyness?

  • Wellers the guvnor. He's surpassed anything Marriot ever did in musical terms.

  • weller wouldent have been as good though if it wernt for Marriot.

  • Weller knows and adores Steve Marriott so much he declined a meeting he was so star struck......Small Faces are/were the mods FACT!

  • Fucking Arctic Monkeys aren't good enough to be pissed on by Weller.

  • What.A.Genius

  • Lets get it right people Weller is the Modfather. If you know your history on Steve White you will realise that The Style Council were a Jazz band in the charts. Still The Jam were far better. Paul McCartney got his life time achievement the year after it goes to show how great Weller was. A generation younger but still received a life time achievement award before a Beattle well done Weller
  • Mod started in London in the 50s by kids that where into modern jazz. Hence the name. Get your facts straight kids.

I sometimes forget what a terrific singer Weller is, thanks for reminding me!

  • u pratts no band started the mod phase mod stood for modern . it was youths dressin in modern clothing and listening to modern music from britain ie why mods were into scooters and new music at the time which was the who the kinks etc .the mods were revoulution if you like. for another example rockers were into bikes and old rocknroll music which was influeanced into britain from america

  • They were actually people who listened to soul music and dressed differently to the rest :) Fuck you sonny jim. Mod is a way of life bitch.

  • @bendonoghue1234

Also the whole scooter and suit thing...that all came from Italian influence.

    :)

  • 90% of british Mod music was influenced from soul and R&B also from america.

  • fail to understand why I got thumbs down for this ?

  • @clashcityrocker2007

lol... i seriosuly dont understand why I got negative feed back for this...Its not a matter of opinion is a matter of FACT.

What people now call "Mod" music came from soul, R&B and Jazz. - FACT Those 3 styles all came from america...FACT

YOu guys who gave me negative feed back are just to stupid, obvious Mod posers and ignorant. I do believe Mr Weller would agree with me if he could read this :)

  • bass playing is not good as original!

  • paul weller is the best there is !!!!!

  • one word describes Paul Weller's music.....PASSION

  • I remember when I saw this on TV couple of years ago.. I didnt understand his music back then.. But NOW I love it

  • gran tema ...soy clashmaniaco...pero paul weller me puede grande los jam¡¡¡¡¡

  • 'Could go on for hours and I probably will, but I'd sooner put some joy back in this town called Malice' !

  • time short, life is cruel, it's up to us to change.. Brilliant lyrics !

  • 1.23 Dee C Lee!

  • was it

  • Paul dances. His kids are half and half!

    OBAMA!

  • Prince ! Wash your rancid mouth out.

  • thanks for putting this up!

i love prince...& weller BIG TIME..

they both performed at the brits that year - (check out my vid..)

weller soooo deserved his award. love him!

  • i just suppose the yanks have there musical culture and we have ours we swap somtimes and indulge its a big pond .but at least we love music and the way its meant to blend all nations

  • 4 word's,

    THE GOD OF MUSIC

  • Who gives a toss about some US 'Hall of Fame' - Weller's the man!!

  • tough

hes the best and hes from england

    get over it

    actualy US didnt start it

USA wasnt even populated by the same music started

    so ha

    Weller ruiles

    GO England

  • exactly weller and the who started off the mod phase and thatwernt happening in america u fucking twat MBRIR u mug

    "We Are The Mods"

  • calm down man

  • lol!

  • thank you ;)

  • Although, I love Weller and all his work, especially The Jam, you are wrong. Weller didn't start off the 'mod phase' as you like to describe it. The Jam were leaders of the Mod Revival. Yes, The Who started the Mod's off, but The Jam didn't, they brought it back when The Who turned into rockers/bohemians. And shut the fuck up about america you bigot, I'm english, but they had a mod phase during the 80s and as a matter of fact, are entitled to an opinion dickweed.

  • THe Who were manufactured to be a "MOD" band though. so you cant really give them credit for coming up with the idea. Not having ago at them or anything i love the who.

  • Your wrong.

No band/artist "started off" the Mod Phase. It was spawned from a collection off Modern Jazz, Soul, R&B ect... All of which came from America.

As for Weller starting the "Mod Phase"

hes would have been just a nipper when the Original Mods were around. The jam lead the way in the Mod Revival.

I wouldent really say what Weller does now is in the same "Mod" category as the Who or the Small Faces. He just appeals to a Mod audience now because of The Jam.

  • tht was in response to deadroutine91's comment page 3

  • Too right, The Who and The Jam compleeeetely different eras

  • there are PLENTY of us in the U.S. that are onto the mans whole trip. Perhaps it's better that he is not some giant "star" in North America, He is a GOD everywhere else...and maybe that's enough!

  • He's the premier artist of the past 30 years...and why on earth the US has never caught on is a mystery. I hear his songs from the Jam and the Style Council in movies and television ads (!!!), but most Americans (and Canadians, I believe) never caught on. Whether you like or accept the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that Rolling Stone set up based in Ohio, please write and e-mail and lobby them to induct the Jam and Weller. If the Clash are in, the Jam and Weller should be as well.

  • I live in the US (and used to live in Cleveland, not 5 miles from the Rock Hall) and I totally agree with you. A few years back they inducted Patti Smith despite her lack of airplay, record sales, popular singles, etc. claiming she was a major influence. Bullshit! Weller has reached more people with his music through the Jam and Style Council and his solo work. Put him in! Stop arguing to get Black Sabbath in the Hall and put in Weller!

  • I remember Patti Smith from the mid-70s and I disagree with you on her. I think she rates it. But I also think Weller individually and the Jam as a group certainly do.

And I think he should be GOD in the US as well as elsewhere in the English-speaking world, thank you.

  • Sorry to disagree, but I think that among the criteria for the Rock Hall, you have to factor in popularity to a degree. Smith's only mainstream claim to fame is her cover of Springsteen's "Because the Night", which IMHO, 10,000 Maniacs hit with this song 15 years later showed that it was the strength of the song, not Smith's performance that made it a classic. I'm not saying she's bad and I understand that other artists like her work, but if you put her in then you have to add Laura Nyro

  • and Janis Ian and Tim Buckley because they have done as much if not more than Smith. Whereas Weller and the Jam stood out as among the best (if not the best) of the explosive punk/New Wave scene of the late 70s/early 80s and Weller has continued on, producing great work ever since that is recognized seemingly everywhere else except here in the States. His influence even extends into the 90s and now with bands like Oasis and Stereophonics following his lead. He deserves the honor more than Smith

  • I think Laura Nyro absolutely deserves to be there. She was very innovative.

  • LEGEND

  • I ADORE Paul Weller!!! Can't say it enough.... :D

  • cool, the bass guy is dressed like Bruce Foxton lol
