@matt1284508 in fact they actually buy the rights to the song so they can sing it and record it. and its an honor for others to think so highly of your music as to sing it themselves.
@matt1284508 Matt I think that is a bit cynical. Of course Gram was from Florida, and doesnt everybody miss their home if they cant go there, especially if it is in the country, not very relevant today.
Nice, except Gram Parsons didn't write the song. A woman named Sylvia Sammons, who was actually born in South Carolina and has memories of growing up there, wrote it. Parsons only "borrowed" it from her. Parsons was born in Florida, and spent all his young life there. Look it up on the Web, it's easy to find.
I'm a stickler for correct credit being due to songwriters where it's due, but...
the argument that Sylvia wrote this is highly debatable and I don't think the idea should presented as fact until there something even resembling proof on the table.
Its from 'Return of the Grievous Angel: A Tribute to Gram Parsons', & has some excellent GP covers by Whiskeytown, Cowboy Junkies, Steve Earle, Emmylou...highly recommended!
I think it was early 80's. My dad is a fan of theirs, and that happened to be his fav song even though it's orig sang by a different band. he was so happy when they played it. They sang it on a t.v. show-they were the guests. My dad recorded it the old-school way (holding up a cassett recorder and blaring the tv.) lol
i have never been able to find an actual recording of it. and over time that cassett got worn out.
her version is a beautiful tribute to gram parsons! :)

So many versions of this great song, and this is a very good one. Gillian puts a lot of her soul into this version. Thanks for posting it.

anyone know what instrument that is behind the guitar?

Just amazing truth in her voice. You can feel it as much as hear it. It's like having a fiddle bow dragged across your soul.

I like this version very much. Also really like Emmylou Harris' version. Great song.

And, of course, this song is on the Byrd's Sweetheart of the Rodeo album. Thanks for Gram Parsons and so many others.

Another amazing version is by 13 year old AJ Lee. Check her out--a future big name bluegrass singer, guaranteed. You heard it here first.

Gram Parsons was born in Winterhaven, Florida and grew up in Waycross, Georgia.
He briefly attended Harvard U. before quitting to become a musician.
