What are you rubbing on the hide when it is stretched out? Are you using sandpaper? if so what grit? I now have hide in alum and salt for around one week. so now I was going to oil and stretch. Is this when you sand flesh side? Then sew holes and after run over aircraft cable?
Thx. Great video. Probably first and last hide. too much work!!
yoyu are amazing. I have ordered some chemicals to tan a fox for my first tan. I am wondering if I should brain tan though for my first time. I'd love to just shadow you for a few months to learn all I am able to do from you. Watching youtube .... it seems you have the most knowledge and expertise in this area of tanning. Can I just pick up some brains from the local grocery store?
I bought this dvd and I will say it is one of the worst put together dvds I have ever seen not to mention its aboying as hell watching this fagget and listening to his gay way of talking. When I ordered this dvd it took a month to get and when I got it only the first ten minutes of the dvd played then it went blank. When I called to get a new dvd I had to fight with him on the phone for twenty min just to get a refund because I didnt want to wait another month for a new dvd. Dont buy this dvd!!!
the draw knife is dull enough to run your thumb across without cutting it. too sharp and your cutting into the skin. too dull and its more work. its better to err on the more work side than the cut into the skin side. putting holes in skins means sewing and weaker skins.
hey iowa...just FYI...this is not a technique limited to aboriginal americans....but yes! we are the link in the chains that are at least 10's of thousands of years old!
thanks for the great replies all! i wish i had even just these 7 minutes when i started...the whole DVD is almost 3 hours long!
That is pretty neat! I Have 7 fleshed and dried rawhide deer skins that i have collected over the years And I have wanted to try and tan them. This was pretty informational. I also liked your website and the information on how to make leggings. But if I make anything out of the skins the first thing would be a possibles bag for all of my muzzleloading gear. I just love the fact that there are people still carrying out the old mountain man and Indian ways of doing things.
Nice work!

@Mrwilwak wood ashes in water will make a lye solution, which does the same thing.

Do you have to take off the hair and the top layer to tan a skin? Or can you tan it and have a finished piece of leather with fur?

is the doubled knife sharp? or slightly dull?
jbone0987 2 years ago
mr - that would be a 2 point.
joe- the skins are not allowed to dry completely, ideally. after a couple of years they are pretty dried out though.
that deer was what was available at the butchers to demo. people shoot way smaller stuff than that all the time.

what is a wet salt? I've always just salted and hung fer a day.

What is that tool he is using to flesh the hide, and remove the fur?
jgm1234567 2 years ago
It is called a draw knife. Traditionally used to debark trees

yalp. pretty small animal. I wouldn't have shot it unless I was sure I wasn't gonna get any other shots at better animals.
