Two things, oh ye of little brain mass:

1. This anime is Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl in English), not Death Note. How you could possibly mix up such radically different anime, I'll never know.

2. I'm not sure it's supposed to be scary so much as spine-tinglingly creepy. Which, IMO, it is. It's a great anime with good art, music, and plot.

The way I see it, the song is depressing, not beautiful. Granted, I'm looking at it from the anime perspective - enma ai. As in, the craziness = reason the people access hell correspondence, which in turn gives life to enma ai. I guess looking at it from an outside view though, yeah, it could seem beautiful.
