I think Dan and Allison's voices blend better though.
And what was Taylor saying about Allison's treatment of this song -- "detached, technical"? Then he compliments her.
From where I'm standing, James Taylor is not quite able to reconcile their different perspectives. And IMO he tainted his own performance with "technical" because of it.
Alison made a huge, giant job with Shaniah Twain on "Coat of Many Colors"... Alison is a sweet heart and superb talent. Long live Alison. And welcome to Macedonia....
I am an old Charlie & Ira fan. I was sad to hear of Charlie's recent passing. We are so very lucky to have folks of such talent keeping the songs of these two very talented brothers alive. Their music is timeless and moving; both Christian's and non-Christian's can find a place at the table of Song. Thank you Charlie & Ira; Thank you Alison & James; and all the other talented folks who do so much to bring the music full circle.

James Taylor did not say the statement about her not being a big enough name. He did'nt record this with her originally due to conflicts, then shot the video for a special with her. The two had performed together previously at concerts, and had frequent collaborators such as Yo Yo Ma and mark O'Connor in common.
The original of this was taped seperately. Taylor thought he was too good to be recorded with someone without a big name. He changed his mind and filmed this once he found out how REALLY good Allison it. Something happens that enlightens others when they aren't paying attention. I always loved James. Allison makes me cry.....whiskey lullaby, children of the alleghany's.......on and on.
@penniewetzel maybe I should have put "without a big name" in quotations.....it was said in an article somewhere that Taylor implied that. I know she is great. I am stating that the original was filmed and recorded separately. They did not perform it together until after Taylor decided he wanted to do it together, after he heard it. I can only say what I read and I can't give you chapter and verse on where it was written. I am a huge fan of Allison Krauss. Don't bust my chops MsCrossed.
Thank you for posting this. It's a great song sung by two of the best voices. They are an incredible blend, clear, sweet and great tambor. This key hits just right in each singer's range, and they make it seem so effortless. I also love the clarity of this recording. I've listened to them do this tune on other cuts and it's just not got the nuance of sound. Each instrument can be heard and yet they all blend.,
Beautiful, beautiful chemistry!! Alison, you sing so beautifully!!! I hope to see your concert one day. For now however, I want to thank you nshields and those who posted alison that I am able to watch her performances.
That duet boggles the mind. Two legends singing a song that truly defines country music. Chet Atkins and B. Bryant really have captured a timeless piece of art through their music.
@okiegirll34 not too many people know who Gordon Mote is, one of the best there is.....I was excited to see this video and when I saw Gordon it made it that much better
Good music takes different paths; first, this is a Chet Atkins/Boudleaux Bryant song. Eddy Arnold recorded it first, then, the Louvin Brothers. This is, of course from the Louvin Tribute CD. To compare with the Louvins would be off the point; forty years of changing styles and tastes. However, the Louvins set the standard for close harmony and style, and these two, staying close to the Louvins style, do a great job. This is just a great song and performance of it.
Heard it , then went straight out to buy the CD just for that one track. Found most of the rest of it fantastic also.
Everyone kept true to the Louvin brothers style exept( I thought )Dolly Parton who put the Dolly style on her part ....pity. I like Dolly bit i think this CD would have been better without her this time.
I love the commentary at the beginning. It's so interesting to hear great musicians talking about their appreciation for each other - it deepens my appreciation for their work too.
I could have dreamt this duet but never thought it would some day come true... Alison Krauss and James Taylor are just about my two all time favorite singers, but they seemed to come from such different musical times & spaces, I just never expected them to join up.
Well, I can't say how glad I am that they did !
Thank you Alison & James for bringing me such beautiful music :o)
I have heard this song thousands of times and sang it hundreds of times and I never knew that Gordon Mote was playing the piano for James and Allison! That is so cool!
Why isn't this being played on the radio? Wake Up! You so called music experts! We have near perfection here, vocally!!

Alison Krauss is as talented as anyone in music today, so versatile from bluegrass to spiritual to rock n roll. Plays a mean fiddle as well.
Makes one feel real artistry is still alive and well,
just less of it.
