A 3-dimensional view really isn't an improvement on your view, but on your experience. You experience things different, and get better into it. However, this still depends on the kind of media (pictures in 3D are useless) and the experience (whether it's an adventure, battle, concert or a fairy tale) 3D adds different things in different kind of ways, and is amazing in an experience that involves natural music and good visual quality.

Every stereoscopic technique i know and have seen or used myself produces out of screen illusions if material is taken or edited accordingly. Small things should "hit" viewer in the face in games if it is edited to get the effect. Small screen obviously reduces the effect but it is possible. Picture was person holding hands close the camera and fingers clearly seem to be outside of screen.

the 3DS has a depth of field like a canon camera lens. it does not have "pop out 3D" like in movie theaters where characters seem to come off the screen and onto your face/lap. nintendo is working on this phase of enhancing 3d next. it took them about 15 years to develop 3d from the virtual boy to the 3ds. that is a half a generation of a population - a VERY long time.

@ROCKETBOOM Rocketboom always has very informative videos like this but i would go further regarding 3D. 2D is often CENSORSHIP in news photography. Information gets lost when things are captured from one point. I use 3D to store information and study it scientifically. Not as a gimmick.There is also possibilities to give people jobs using 3D. 2D makes people lazy. They accept visuals without thinking how and who has done it because it is too easy to do and common.

For once, I totally agree with Roger Ebert -- I suspect 3D is a further, desperate attempt by the electronics industry to push new products onto the market. I remember in the 80's when my neighbors had a huge 4 foot+ projection TV and my other neighbors had a 3ft rear-projection TV. It took me 20 years, but dammit, I finally got my own, and 2 years later, the new direct-LCD TVs cost just a little more than it did to replace the bulb in mine. :(

With all due respect, when you reviewed the history of 3D movies you left out the 1950's, which was when they originated! Even Hitchcocks 'Dial 'M' For Murder' was a 3D movie in the theatres. The current (as in, of the last 100 years or so) 3d technology is just a fad. In its current iteration, it brings terrible strain to your eyes, making it less than enjoyable at times. And it's not real 3d in any sense - Fake 3d be damned, bring us the hologram cinema already! >.<

While 3D is horrible for movies, where it adds little depth to story or setting, it is great for gaming, as it's an interactive experience that adds immersion to something that WANTS you to get involved with the setting, and you really don't realize it until you try it.
