This woman is in another dimension from all the rest of the opera singers. Having said that, to hear a 10 year old girl sing this aria and match up note for note with Battle and Larmore is absolutely astounding. You expect an adult opera singer to do well with it, but not a child with no formal training.
Jackie Evancho may never sing in an opera, but her monstrous talent is undeniable.
Expos73, I wonder why Youtube allow a treatening comment from piece of garbage like you. Jacki Evancho should just stay home and go to school and not sing to make millions from hearing squeeky little turp's voice. .Also learn how to write proper English.
@jamesings I cant write proper English ! It's" threatening" not (treatening) as you spelled it. And if you were'nt such a dim bulb you would have realized I was only making the point that it drives Jackie Evancho fans crazy for anyone to say anything at all negative about her. If you had any sense of humor you would have realized my comment was "tongue in cheek" and not really threatening. If you dont believe me make a negative Jackie Evancho comment and you will see for yourself.
@expos73 I understand. People get upset when they see less than complimentary comments about their singer/artist. I feel Jackie can only get better as she matures.
@jamesings Glad I made my point. And I see You made a positive comment about Kathleen Battle who is my favorite soprano. But I would recommend you objectively check out the NPR performance of Jackie Evancho of this aria. Just piano accompaniment in an intimate radio studio. No pomp, just what I think is beautiful singing.
To enjoy this majestic vocal performance, I had to scroll down so as not to watch the embarrassing video - the didactic wasteland footage and the dreamy too-close-ups of Ms. Larmore's overly made-up face (I hasten to add I mean nothing against Ms. Larmore personally, I'm sure this approach to the video was not her idea)
@spiliada A woman's performance need not be sensual - but the video producer certainly focused on the sensual aspects of Ms. Larmore's charms - really out of keeping with the music, I agree.
Why are tarkovsky's comments being flagged? Is he spamming/phishing? He sent me a comment.
I know mchampag will probably get his panties in a bunch over this, but I believe Xerxes enjoying the shade of the tree is really his attempt to find consolation and healing over his disastrous attempt to conquer Greece with crushing defeats at Marathon, Salamis and Plataea. Just my opinion.
@jamesings I strongly advise you not to make any negative comments about the beloved Jackie Evancho on any of her videos. If you do you will be crucified and reviled by millions !
I say this in jest of course but it is pretty much true. And I guess I'm one of the mob too since I much prefer her rendition of this aria.
Really, the air is just about Xerxes' favorite tree: "Never was there a shade of a tree more beloved and lovable, or more sweet." How could such a simple remark become such a celestially beautiful aria? Takes a genius like Handel! And having such a voice as Larmore's to interpret helps too :)
The "Ombra mai fu" aria (A shade that was), is a reflexion of the destruction of nature. The trees being destroyed. That's why you see all the junk that we mankind have turned our Mother Earth into; the masterful creation of our Lord. Handel was right 200 years ago. About the music: profound, beautiful voice of this gorgeous mezzosoprano. Not very often talent and beauty go hand in hand.
@Soaringeagle65 The reason for their being, and our hearing of them, is not saving the trees or saving the seals as our little Jackie Evancho desires, but saving something far more precious, OUR SOULS. I think this must be their mission.
Perfect performance! Absolutely agree with you about its integrity. But, please, listen to Kirsten Flagstadt's one. It is not "baroque" enough but is really pathetic.
should be sung by a male Alto! still cracking though.

Sorry.
The voice of a woman -even though in this case it's amazing- doesn't fit this song.
Too sensual. Remembering, attracting and charming.
This song is like glass or an ancient, blind mirror.
It's actually a man's song, contreténor ou non.

@sunsdomain :-) By the way, it's a version -chacun á son gout.
And J. Larmore is/was really great in Orlando Furioso, in a role, maybe written to her..:-)

Oh stop with Evancho. She has a long way to go before she can sing like a mature woman.

Yes the simple beauty of Handel's genius.

For pete's sake, people—Xerxes is praising a tree for its friggin' shade. Don't blow it out of proportion.
