hmm... the end that is in his right hand it nothing but a hallow white piece of plastic around a black stick with a white tip on the top whatch when he starts off his fingers hidden in the hat as he shimmies the other longer side off of the right hallow tip sliding it up the hidden side of his arm he simply holds onto the hallow tip and pulls the black stick out wards waking it appear to be longer

You could hide the paper tube in your hand and let your spectators inspect the wand, then put the tube in your pocket.

Afterwards, you could retrieve the tube and shrink it again!
