I wish I hadn't stumbled across this, I've just been and bought the DVDs, on impulse! Good God, there were precious few TV channels and ITV was made up of small companies that produced some amazing and wonderful stuff (and total trash let's not forget). My partner and I used to laugh at the lyrics of the title song, and we didn't get upset at rhyming "a bunch of fairies" with "United Dairies". I think it was a kid's programme for adults to watch, so they felt like they were kids still.
This was from a time when ITV's individual franchises were mandated to provide a strand of children's programming during weekdays and a certain amount of extra kids' stuff during the weekends. It's like watching a foreign TV station because it most certainly is not the bland, crappy, non-region, generic ITV that exists today and which has squandered all of the goodwill which the regional franchises (like, in this case, Tyne Tees) enjoyed.
i used to watch this in australia back in the 80's and 90's when i was a kid growing up... fuck some people take political correctness too far... can everyone just calm the fuck down please?
I actually wasn't allowed to watch this as a kid. My parents had some friends who had the TV on in their living room on a Sunday night and they quite often used to go round there. I used to watch it there, as my mum and dad stood chatting to their friends about their new MFI kitchen fittings, while my sister and my parents' friends' toddler ate play doh!
I live in the US but I have the full song for this show on my Ipod. My son wants to see the show since we sing this every morning on the way to school!
I used to watch Supergran all the time - mostly for "location spotting" as I live a couple of towns over from where they filmed it (A place called Tynemouth). In fact, there is an old church there which used to have a few props from the TV show in it, dunno if they still there now though.
From one eighties kid to another - yes i watched it religiously too and can tell you much about the story line either.....hmm....besides a crazy granny with super powers
Like every other 80s kid, I used to watch this religiously. But in truth, I don't think I actually ever understood it.. Beyond the old lady having super powers, I didn't really get what was going on.
Be honest, did you REALLY understand it, or have you just been afraid for the past 20 odd years to speak out and admit you didn't have a clue what the hell it was all about?
Important point: although Supergran herself was Scottish the series was made by Tyne Tees Television (Newcastle) so it was filmed around greater Newcastle-Upon-Tyne (particularly Whitley Bay) and set in a fictional north-east of England town called "Chisleton".
All the other characters, like the children, have clear Geordie accents.
@christian2006morris The regional output was superb (sadly never to be matched again seemingly), but the logos were a bit shite! Classy though. I love all of them.
That sounds to me like "Woof!" It ran from 1989 to 1997 on Children's BBC and the dog was originaly played by Pippen. Anthony Head cropped up later as a man with the same affliction. Hope that answers your question ok!
wow mdddpd you relly got us in a paragraph there. Now all you need to do is spread your word to the masses. oh but first learn to spell and pull your prejudiced heid oot your arse. I'm guessing you're great fun to be around
you forgot to include buckfast, kilt wearing, inbreeding, being tight with cash, and being ginger; now let's move on to what's wrong with immigrants...
This is literally the first time I've seen the Supergran intro in over 20 years, but I still remembered all the words (and sang along loudly, with actions)
