But there is a tendency: Classical and modern classical music has to be written down and is as I pressume both composed and refined on paper (or computers). Beethoven was deaf when he wrote his last symphony. Without the written form of music, he would not have been able to compose at all.

Jazzers, Rockers & the majority of non western music is "mostly" composed while playing & jamming.
