Phil Woods has never performed this piece but he has recently quoted the FINISDUO interpretation of this piece ("Phil Woods Sonata CD) as the definitive version. You can hear a sample on finisduo.com page
Can anyone tell me why his ending is different to the sheet music i have, which basically mirrors the beginning? Or is it just performers licence? Thanks :)
@Undermyskin93 Woods has written two versions of this piece. One before in the eighties, and a revision in 1997. The version you here is the 1997 revision. However, in the ending, and even the beginning, Harle adopts a couple of rhythms and notes from the older addition. For instance, he ghosts three low D's in the beginning, which were the instructions on the older edition of the piece; but there are only two D's on the new edition. His changes are minor, but make his interpretation stand out.
Saxophone players realy need to up their standards. Fast fingers and high notes aren't all you need. A good tone from top to bottom is needed as well. I find this verision to be harsh and not musical. It's easy to play straight but being able to swing takes time and the proper concept to find the right grove. If you want a nice version listen to Victor Morosco the person it was writen for. It's much better, still not a great improvised solo but at least he is musical.

Why do clasical Sax players even bother.
Their only plus is they have good technic most of the time but their sound sucks and they can't tune worth shit . If you use this verison as a guide your not helping yourself. Get a real jazz player or just some one that has a good concept of a saxophone sound and can play in tune.
Harle is one of the best players in the world. I agree that he should add a better imrpov solo and perhaps more jazz ornaments and consider usinga jazz like vibrato... but this piece is a jazz classical fusion as it clearly states on the sheet music product notes. But this performance is amazing
This piece isn't meant to be a stricltly jazz piece. It's a cross over. A good musician can do both classical and Jazz. There's nothing wrong with classical saxophone, those of you who think classical sax 'sucks' then you are clearly narrow minded.
@saxman6 That's your opinion, and you're welcome to it, but don't insult a classical musician, you wouldn't be playing what you're playing without them. Classical tone is brilliant, you just have a different opinion and you're welcome to it, but I don't like the way you blasted anyone who plays classical sax.
Who you class as a "Real" Jazz player is irrelevent, he is a brilliant saxophonist.
In my opinion, listening a lot to Phil Woods, John Harle is pretty close but he has a VERY smooth tone as always. Would love it more edgy. Good version though.
FYI (as you sure know), this piece is dedicated to Victor Morosco.
@SAXPLAYER128 I disagree. Tone-wise, and I'm talking without added timber, they have a very similar approach on what colors to give a tone. Of course, Phil Woods' embochure is more loose in general..

Prefer the Victor Morosco version, but then again, it was written for him.

@pammusai Not quite, this recording was made in 1987, so this would be the original and Undermyskin93's copy would be the revision :)

@MonoRec88 I have to disagree, Phil Woods sounds nothing like John Harle, they are both fantastic musicians in their own right.

this piece has an improvised section right?
i was just wondering, is the solo that john harle plays transcribed with the sheet music? or do they only give you the chords?
cheers
John
Johnjy2 3 years ago 7
You get chords in the Advance Music edition. Though there is a suggestion for the first four bars (of the 32 bar section).
empowemint 3 years ago 7
Pretty much what empowermint said.
you are given chord symbols for the 32 bar passage, with ideas of notes in the first four bars.
john harle is doing an improvisation in this, and so is the piano a little later on
matmel24 3 years ago 8
does anyone know where i can get what lenehan plays in the improv bit on sheet music? would be most grateful
