Vic & Bob stated in an interview in a later BBC show that they did follow a rough script and format but yeah most of the stuff was improvised, e.g. they had no idea what Matt Lucas was going to say before he did the scores and such. Also, they did do a bit of drinking before the show... may have had something to do with it.
