Same year I saw them! Didn't really get it until saw it live. Then. Well. Holy Crap. It's bone drenching stuff! Nearly ripped my clothes off I tell ye! Great great stuff. Absolute magic live.
Yeah, let's go get a professionally trained classical singer or such to replace Cave, since he is such an awful singer. Let's be honest - it wouldn't be the same and not nearly as memorable. Nick has a distinct and remarkable singing voice to begin with, he doesn't need to be pitch perfect or whatever because every performance is always emotionally charged...That alone is perfection enough.
Haha so true! But you're right. It is cool that nobody gets it. So many people who DO like this genre of music say they prefer Tom Waits. But I have to say I'd rather listen to Nick. This, Muddy Water, Knocking On Joe. Great stuff. I think his best 3. And the line "My cos' was workin' miracles," wow, so creepy. In my opinion, there's your calf :-)
Oh knocking on Joe, what a song. No one else could do it like he can, and so few get it. I ask myself why. But its the Brussels Sprouts syndrone. If u like them nothing else will do, put to many they are nothing but raw sewage. I remember having friends for dinner once ( oh lardy dah) and putting Nick Cave on. The guy said "this bloke can't sing". I knew he would. He had no idea that Nick has the best singing voice u could ever hear. He is probably listening to Queen as i type this............
Nice! (laughingly) Well that was me for years about Bob Dylan, then I realised the years of listening pleasure that I missed out on because "he can't sing." The radio is FULL of people who can sing, and it's a putrid cesspool, at least here in the States. Thank the heavens for youtube
And why don't people appreciate his genius? Just this song for instance - writing from the viewpoint of John the Baptist just before his beheading? Who thinks of that stuff?! It's beautiful, twisted, warped, disturbing, intriguing. It's art, just not as pretty as some would like.
It baffles me why more people cannot appreciate his genius. But isnt the best art like that? It doesnt have to be pretty, but it has to have an effect on you. Think of the calf in formaldyhide - twisted, warped, disturbing yes. Pretty? Well, some people think so.
What is it about good music that can transport you back in time. I remember buying Tender Prey as an 18yo and listening to this on cassette when driving to see my gf in London. This song has always had emotion, but this version is truly stunning.
When I tell people my favourite artist is Nick Cave, many of them look blank. I kinda like that.
haha me too! Hardly anyone knew him then, and even less now. I was 20 in '89 when I bought this cassette. This song creeped me out in the best way. Still gives me chills. It's like I have a secret that others don't know, and if they did, they still wouldn't get it. I think you just had to be there when it was fresh to understand the significance and shock of it all.
This is the most wonderful performance. From the first whale of "I STOOD IN THE WATER" had me holding back the emotion! Thanks so much for posting. Is there more footage from this show???
This must've been some show to witness! The Your Funeral,My Trial version was beautiful, and this is no different-maybe even more emotive, if anything. Are there any other vidoes from this concert floating around?
You`re right, this Concert was great. I was 11 by the time but i saw and recorded it on television. I will upload the whole gig, but i need a VHS-Card for my PC. Cheers
Wonderful, wonderful song. Oscar Wilde has nothing on this! What a beautiful, despairing, oppressive sound. I thought Nick Cave was the master when I was sixteen. Now at thirty-one, I see no reason to revise my opinion.
Cave's/Savage's/Harvey's piano melodies have ALWAYS been top notch too. Another example right here.

Fuck you, listen to are you the one I've been waiting for.
Not everything should sound "nice", because not everything is nice or perfect. Fuck the autotune (photoshopped) type of singing.

@kendalandy Well I love both Queen and Nick Cave, for different reasons. They're both top 3 artists for me (along with Bob Dylan).
