Yvonne Elliman, one of the most squandered talents in pop music. She was beautiful, had a fantastic voice, great stage presence--but a short-circuited career, because she was a vulnerable woman in a business of men. Or ball-buster women. So sad. She had great appeal.

I would REALLY like to believe the sound was live but I'm so sceptical. I think maybe they overdub her live voice + chorus + orchestra along with the original master tapes. However the last bar throw my theory overboard - unless there are other master tapes with that ending.

Anyway, the audience couldn't care less, they were having a fantastic time.

the best thing about singers from way back then is that if they were to sing today in 2010 they would still sound exactly the same. Too many "singers" today use auto tune to help them out and sound like garbage during their concerts. i won't name names :(

The song is fantastic, as is Yvonne Elliman. But someone mentioned in another thread that this is lip synched. I saw this performance on PBS, and though to myself. It sounds exactly like it did back in the 70's. I now know that many performers parctice synching. They use the studio recording dubbed over the live performance.

This is awesome... 25 years later, there is NO compromise in the attention to the song's original sound. It's just like in 78. And a sidenote, I wish concert performances still matched studio releases... too much studio magic... sound altering... sounds nobody can successfully pull off in a live show. Makes it less realistic, and based less on vocal and instrumental talent. This song and performance is a great example of how it SHOULD be done from beginning to end!

The dance portion was at a later concert on PBS at the convention center in Asbury Park NJ in 2004. It is a great collection of performances from the 1970's that was available on PBS and has been added to my collection.
